Online RBI is up and ready for people to play.  Vitb6 and I played two games tonight.  It was pretty solid, sitting back and playing RBI on the PC.

We noticed only about 5% lag, so that was very good.  We played straight pitch, though...so curvers will have to give the online play a try and report back.

So far the only bad thing for Vit and I was getting used to the Gravis pad.  We had more than the average amount of fuck ups...throwing to the incorrect base, retreating poorly, etc.  That'll just take some time getting used...unless we somehow connect our NES controllers (feel free to comment on how to do this).

But all-in-all, very fun and enjoyable.

Oh yeah, the games:

Game 1, Vit beat me 7-6 with a late comeback...Cards over Tigers.
Game 2, I beat Vit, 15-13 with a 7-run 7th inning.  Tigers over Cards.

Jason was lighting it up in the second game with Blank Morris who finished 4/5 with 2 HRs and 2 singles...and 6 RBIs.  Ozzie almost had a frickin' homer...if it wasn't for the run-in technique.

One thing that I caught myself doing was saying "dee-nee" and "dah-nah" a lot to my computer screen.

Ok, let's get some more test tries in.  Post an issues here.

THe groundwork is laid boys.  Find a friend in chat and play a game...

One silly thing I noticed when testing for Ryno & JoeDirt (who wanted to play first but the server wasn't working) is to make sure you actually load the game in FCEU before connecting to the server.  And make sure you both use the same ROM...

Lips and Vit both had a weird issue where the screen black for about 5 seconds, though sound still worked.  Let us know if anyone else has that issue...

Oh yeah...I'm not sure how online RBI used to be played (connecting at one person's IP)... for substitutions, we did the following:

For pitcher sub, we moved the pitcher around like crazy.
For batter sub, we dropped him into the back of the box.

BUT Gantry and I noticed that you can type back and forth in the network play window.  So...if you don't play RBI full screen, you can type back and forth between at-bats, innings, etc...  Like I said in my above post...I was dee-nee-ing to the my computer screen too much.  Next time...I'll share.

Sharing is caring.

MIKE:

Lips, nightwulf and I are working on the server right now.  It'll take a day before you can connect and play.  Or try again in the morning.  You have to find an opponent beforehand.  But do us a solid and wait until tomorrow until you try again, your connections are messing things up a bit...

Ok ive been connecting when i do i loose control and cant do any thing sorry if i have been screwing up connection. I need to play have not played in a long time!!!

No prob buddy... You typically just want to connect, don't play the player number.  Once you and a friend connect, player one is the first controller.  Give it a whirl tomorrow...

And register so you can get in chat and find someone to play with!

I must say it was pretty fun.

I was DEE-NEE'ing and DAH-NAH'ing  to my CPU too.

Lips-  that runs in on Ozzie was perfect, held me to a triple and then Blank actually got out to end the inning.  But how was that Vince Coleman HR?  DEE-NEE!  2 outs.  Pitcher hit.  Then Coleman cracks one 4 rows back to tie the game at that point.  I just started laughing outloud as I could envision you just saying, "ASS".

Good times.

Online RBI is definitely fun.  Just a whole different experience, you are by yourself against a real opponent.  Works well...

Quick tip - If you are getting lag, make sure you have your screen maximized.  Mine initially ran like crap until I ran the game in full screen mode...

I personally feel the game runs a bit faster and the timing is definitely different with the tiny lag.  But it's close enough to the real thing.  I'm impressed...

Post by: Lips on 08/10/04, 12:43:25 PM
I agree.  The game seemed to play faster.

But anyways...are we gonna get two fce ultra junkies to try out a ROM today, and give us some more feedback?

I'm waiting...

Is it true? Is RBI really working online with little lag? I'm pretty impressed that you guys got this working.

As for the NES joysticks, it can be done, no doubt. I built an SNES -> par port converter. Worked OK for a bit, until the box got some milleage, then it stopped. I probably have to resolder it to get it working again.

It's just so much easier to get a good USB joystick than do that, but it's certainly possible. Of course you could just buy this:

Joe Dirt and I played a couple of games tonight.  Very little lag time.  There were a couple of instances that got choppy, but it didn't hurt anything.

Game one we did straight pitch Joe was DT and I was CA.  Ruppert hit a pinch Granny to tie the game, Hndrks hit an out of the screen pinch homer, and Wilfong went pinch Dong as well.  Final score 15-11

Next game we go any pitch goes and I got really lucky and hit homers with Hrbek and Gladden as the Twins beat the Giants 2-0.  Joe and I combined for 11 hits and 27 K's.

Once joe gets a controller, he'll probably kill me.

Awesome!  I am really impressed with the game play.  Curve is a lil difficult, but both players have the same issues...

I can't believe it's finally happening.  Online RBI.  The gods have spoken.

Thank God my b-day is Thursday.  Marquis' pic is my new request for a gift from my wife.  Forget that Swedish tickler machine.

Yes, this server has four-player support for games like Super Spike VBall.  The good part is that if two people connect after the original players, they will be players3 & 4, who obviouly can't have any support in RBI.  So they are basically spectators...

Went to bed around 6am, got woken up via customer page at 9am.  I'm just glad my day is free from customers, meaning I can do everything remotely....

And watch mode is definitely a fun way to see people play.  I might jump in on some games tonight just to watch and comment back on here....

how many games can be played at once?
Title: Re:Quick online RBI primer
Post by: Gantry on 08/11/04, 12:53:43 PM
As long as you are all using different ROMs to play, it's pretty much unlimited.  But if you have people who all want to play the original RBI you have 5 ROMs to choose from as of today- nightwulfs 2-player pause ROM, licensed, unlicensed, overstuffed licensed and overstuffed unlicensed.  So 5 games at this point and if it ever got bigger than that we can make more ROMs...

This firewall at work can bite me, real hard. Maybe if I went to my boss and explained the situation, I can get the company firewall taken down...

I gotta give props to newbie dukescb...we played an online curve game.  First of all, it was too choppy for curve (not complaining; I love online rbi too much to complain about it), so I'm in no way commenting on his hitting...but I had a perfect game going in the 7th inning, and with 2 strikes, Mookie lays down the absolute perfect bunt.  It was awesome!

I finally got my work/firewall issues installed my setting up a wireless connection and not having a firewall. Played a game against Ryno, and while it was choppy, it was sweet. I agree with JoeDirt that I think straight is the way to go online, due to the lag. I'll have to play more to test it out, though...

THat's weird because I didn't experience any lag at all.

I just flat out sucked!

Yo Gantry,

Just got back into town from Argentina. Didn't have any online access while I was gone. But, thanks to you guys, I had RBI on my laptop for the 10+ hour flights each way. That helped a lot.

And now you've made the impossible, possible. Much thanks and gratitude. Can't wait to have a game with you and the fellas.

Ps. Watch out for HoJo off the bench, he likes to bite...

One Flap Down is headed to the chatroom to find a game.

Those controllers are mighty tempting...does anyone know if snes/usb controllers could be used to play nes games?  Being that we (my roommate and I) have four snes controllers combined, it would cool just to get the 4-player snes adapter and just use that for both systems....

And, for those of you that did buy nes/usb controllers, how are they holding up?  Would you recommend them?  At the minimum, I wouldn't mind getting one for RBI and other favorites.

If you're talking about SNES controllers with USB connectors that plug into your computer, you should be able to use them with any emulator.  I'd assume it would show up to Windows as a generic 8-button joystick (I'm not sure how the drivers work for custom controllers), and you could just map the buttons to whatever you want in FCEUltra.

Hi

The RBI primer says that the address for network play is dee-nee.com. Is that the entire address?

Thanks.

Get the Retro Pad.  This works tons better than the Gravis.  In fact I cannot notice ANY difference b/w the Retro Pad and regular controller for the NES box.  They are kind of expensive though ($26).

Still haveing trouble playing.  It is wierd, since my friend can see me selecting my team, but I do not see anything he is doing.  We are still able to chat using the Network play screen so I know the connection isn't bad.
Are there some settings on my computer I need to adjust or something.  This is really irritating.  From my friend's end, everything seems to be working fine.  (ie, I connect as player1, my friend connects as player two.  I push select to get to the 2 player mode and push start.  I then go and pick my team (Dt).  Then nothing happens.  Player 2 just sits on Boston.  Then using Network play, my friend will send me a message saying that he noticed I picked NL, he picked Ca.  He asks why I am not selecting my pitcher.  On my computer I am still on the "select team" screan.

Please, any suggestions.  It has been my dream for years to play this online, since all of my RBI buds live out of state now.

Is someone would be willing to help me out with this and give me a call, that would rock.  Send me a message/email and I will give my number and set up a time this week.
