Funny that Reggie Jackson, Andre Dawson, Jose Canseco and George Bell didn't make the list, but Will Clark came in at #6. Also from the RBI series Howard Johnson (#9) and Rickey Henderson (#4) both made the list from RBI 4. I thought Henderson was better in RBI 3.
In this one for the top 15 virtua athletes of all time....

Rickey Henderson from RB! 4 came in at #13

I haven't thought aout it a lot, but I was thinkng about the best players (and pitchers, who rarely get mentioned) from RBI (original and series) or baseball games from that era (8 & 16 bit), late 80's to early 90's.
I'm glad that first guy remembered to mention Paste from Bases Loaded, although Paste did have a pretty glaring weakness - if you bean him in the middle innings, he will charge the mound, kick the pitcher in the balls, and get ejected.
I'm surprised at all these guys mentioning RBI 4 - I never knew anyone who had that game. I played a ton of RBI 3, and I'd say the best players in that game were Barry Bonds and Ryne Sandberg, although Rickey was right up there (better speed, not quite as much power).
You're right that pitchers rarely get mentioned in lists like this... one that comes to mind is Randy Johnson in Griffey Baseball for the SNES.
Lots of those lists tend to include Tony Armas - I think it's because he was just hiding there on the bench, and few people (even when I first played the game) had heard of him, so when you first discovered him it was such a surprise that he seemed even better than he actually was.
Plus the pinch hit bonus... I'm pretty sure I saw the first link before, because I remember having the Paste discussion
I don't even know if Clark is top10 if you include all stars, regardless not an all-time best video game player.
Beef I played RBI 4 a few times never liked it that much. RBI 3 on the Genesis wasn't much better, they should have just kept the NES gameplay and went with the Genesis graphics, but I remember HoJo and Cal Ripken being beasts.
In RBI 3 (excluding division winners) R. Henderson gets the nod from me as the game's best, I was an Athletics fan as a kid. Still fucking pissed off that they got swept by the Reds.
Bonds and Sandberg would definitely make my top 5 though. Cecil Fielder had monstrous power. He and Sandberg were tied at 945. Also RBI 3 had realistic HR distances (unlike genesis versions, yet another reason I dislike them). Strawberry hit one off me that went 470+ feet. The farthest one I ever hit was 469 ft by McGwire past the center field scorebard. Also Rickey was the first player I hit 3 HR in a game with. He can hit them 420-435 ft in RBI 3.
As far as Bases Loaded, Paste was the best but they made him "too good". Didn't play that game a lot, maybe it was the center field camera. But Utah's Agua was a beast as well, and if I recall there was a guy from DC (or Washington), could be Philly and another on Boston that were problems. If you can remember their names let me know.
Anyway my "ALL RBI" team (I'll probaly exclude a lot of Genesis players cuz I didn't really like those versions) would be....
C - Matt Nokes (Det) - RBI
1B - Darrell Evans (Det) - RBI
2B - Ryne Sandberg (Chc) - RBI 3
3B - Howard Johnson (NYM) - RBI 2/ RBI 4
SS - Cal Ripken Jr. (Bal) - RBI 4
LF - Rickey Henderson (Oak) - RBI 3
CF -
RF - Reggie Jackson (Cal) - RBI
BENCH
LF - Barry Bonds (Pit) - RBI 3
LF - Kevin Mitchell (SF) - RBI 2
RF - Darryl Strawberry (NYM) - RBI/ RBI 3
SS - Alan Trammell (Det) - RBI
I was going to go with 5 bench players but then excluded All Stars, Arcade Version and Division Winners (so there went Dawson, '88 Canseco, McGwire, Mays, Ruth etc.). Juan Gonzalez and Paul Molitor were said to be the best of latter RBI versions but I wouldn't know. So I need a starting CF and some IF for the bench. Maybe Will Clark, he's been consistent. Was very good in RBI, RBI 2, RBI 4 (even his worst performance, RBI 3, was solid) and Sports Talk Baseball (Genesis - that game had the best batting stances), though not #6 all time.
Next I'll do pitchers. I just don't know how many. I'm thinking a 5 man starting rotation and 5 relievers.
Paste was not the best player on Bases Loaded. He wasn't even the best player on Jersey!
Yes, the .467 avg and 60 hr (or close to it) were nice. . . . yes, he hit it hard. . . but he was not the long ball threat that the cleanup hitter, Bay, was.
Bay was the man. I found that guys with a stance similar to Bay's were a much stronger long ball threat than the "hunched over" stance of Paste.
Despite not playing it in a long time, I'm still willing to call you a liar.
I kept stats for hundreds of games on Bases Loaded -- used an official league scorebook. Bay hit homers on, at minimum, a 2-to-1 basis to Paste.
Paste crushed the ball, but just didn't hit too many homers. His style player's most frequent homer was the foul pole hugger.
I also used the score book to record countless games and seasons of RBI. .. .. I was nerdy like that . . . . .would work up schedules and play all the games, flipping a coin to determine which team I would control.
I'm clearly out of my league, but like Bo Jackson fans in Tecmo I will continue to insist I'm right.
LT is better than Bo in Tecmo I
I played some Bases Loaded, but not nearly as much as Ryno did, apparently. I played much more Bases Loaded 3 (which was a really good game - they refined the gameplay a lot, although it was hard to get use to the center field camera for fielding).
I played Baseball Stars for way too long before I figured out that the fielders pretty much run and catch fly balls on their own.
Yeah... I always thought, "Man, I'm really good at getting these guys into position, considering how zoomed-in the camera is," then eventually realized "No, it's basically doing everything except the last thirty pixels for me."

Really?!? Then why is everyone (the majority) on Bo's nutsack?

I always hated the zoom in camera. Hated it with a passion. For defense RBI/2/3 as well as Sports Talk Baseball had the best camera angles for fielding. Until STB wasn't aware of "auto-defense", but it makes it so much easier, if not me more lazy. They're hitting camera angle was nice.
And....
RBI
Roger Clemens, Bret Saberhagen, Tom Henke
RBI 3
Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley, Rob Dibble, Doug Drabek
... are who come to mind for best pitchers of the RBI series.
Baker on Kansas could drop bombs too.
Ken Griffey baseball had some pretty awesome players. Granted, the 1993 stats were quite possibly the most used stat year in the history of baseball games, but the game was the tits. Barry Bonds was really good.
Would be cool to put together a top 10 from each console.
Top 10 (not in particular order) ....
RBI
1. Andre Dawson (NL)
2. Jose Canseco (AL)
3. Reggie Jackson (Cal)
4. Goerge Bell (AL)
5. Darrell Evans (Det)
6. Darryl Strawberry (NYM)
7. Tim Raines (NL)
8. Alan Trammell (Det)
9. Mark McGwire (AL)
10. Eric Davis (NL)
If excluding all stars, then Tony Armas, Kirk Gibson, Will Clark should make the cut. Strange that someone who hit .332 with 28 HR (Puckett) wasn't among the elite.
RBI 2
1. Kevin Mitchell (SF)
2. Howard Johnson (NYM)
3. Will Clark (SF)
4. Eric Davis (Cin)
5. Ruben Sierra (Tex)
6. Robin Yount (Mil)
7. Glenn Davis (Hou)
8. Bo Jackson (KC)
9. Mark McGwire (Oak)
10. Ryne Sandberg (Chc)
RBI 3
1. Rickey Henderson (Oak)
2. Barry Bonds (Pit)
3. Darryl Strawberry (NYM)
4. Ryne Sandberg (Chc)
5. Cecil Fielder (Det)
6. Mark McGwire (Oak)
7. Jose Canseco (Oak)
8. Andre Dawson (Chc)
9. Lenny Dykstra (Phi)
10. Kevin Mitchell (SF)
Could also go with Bonilla, Griffey Jr., Gant.
my friends and i still play roger clemens baseball during holidays just for the zoom-in tag plays going into bases.
i'm pretty sure they all have the same attributes, but Terryton from the Atlanta Condors is still the most feared hitter in the league
