Title: Strange folks
Post by: Dryden on 08/11/04, 04:22:58 PM
In light of the latest BOP-bitchfest, there's something I've never fully understood about the folks here.  Presumably, we all make use of computers somewhat regularly, and most of us have at least been playing computer games since the mid to late 80's.  So, it would stand to reason that we are the sort of people who generally like technology and what it does for us.

Which makes the regular "I can't ever believe it, even if there is proof" arguments related to BOPs, pitcher HRs, 27 strikeout games all the more confusing.  Just because something hasn't been seen by someone, doesn't mean you can't prove it happens.  Strange things happen all the time.

For instance:  In May 26, 1930, Joe Sewell of the Cleveland Indians struck out twice in one game.  He struck out once in his other 108 games that season.  Weird shit happens.  If you can pitch a complete game with a pitcher in RBI and strike out the last batter, you can strike out the 26 before him.  It's hard, but you can do it.  If pitchers can hit foul balls long enough to be HRs if they were fair, they can hit HRs, too.  And if Nightwulf is willing to put in the time to find the code that describes how BOPs happen, don't just say you don't fucking believe it...

If you don't believe it, go disprove it.  But try something a little more substantial than "no way, I never have seen it, so it's crap".  I've never seen an electron, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Bunch of savages in this town.

Thanks, Dryden. I certainly don't expect everyone to have wasted their youth learning assembler like I did, and I don't discourage skepticism or asking for a further explanation, especially in a situation like this where we've all been playing the same game for nearly 20 years.

What royally pissed me off were snide remarks and general asshole-ish attitudes (not referring to posts in the forum, btw) when this topic came up. Before you start attacking me personally, come to me with information. Edit a ROM to change the error probability to zero, and try to make a "BOP".

I don't think it's possible, but I'm open to the idea. In all my years of playing, I've never noticed myself causing "BOP"s by throwing too early, so I'm really not the person to test this. If you feel you can reproduce the scenario easily, drop your errors to zero in the ROM and try it out. If you can still "BOP," I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong.

I hope I wasn't the cause of all of this. I'll admit that I'm not a quarter of the computer expert that nightwulf is - this site and everyone here is forever indebted to his hard work. Certainly, he doesn't get the credit or respect he deserves for what he does, and that's a shame.

I brought this up to nightwulf in chat, but it frustrates me that I don't have the knowledge to do the research necessary to prove any theories that I have regarding the BOP. So, if nightwulf says that there's no proof that the quick throw is related to the BOP, I'll believe him, even if I don't understand the logic behind it (and it's completely my knowledge gap here).
