Since everyone was white in RBI, and my baseball knowledg was still far from complete, I was very surprised when I eventually found out certain RBI players were black guys. Among them:
1. Lou Whitaker
2. Andre Dawson
3. Donnie Moore
4. Dave Henderson
5. Kirby Puckett
6. Harold Baines
7. George Bell
Anyone else remember the same thing? If so, for whom?
I personally followed baseball around the time of RBI, so I knew who most of the players were. I think I always assumed Rupperto was white until I researched his legend page (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/heroes/ruppert.shtml) though, only guy I can think of...
You didn't know that a guy named "Andre" was black?!
I'd probably vote for Donnie Moore. He was dead by the time I started really following baseball, so I'd never seen him play.
This reminds me of the "Reggie Cleveland Group", an idea started by Bill Simmons - guys who you think they're black when you hear their name but aren't. Marcus Giles and Khalil Greene are prominent current members.
I partied with Khalil Green at Clemson not too long ago. He doesn't have much of a problem picking up chicks, to put it mildly.

So, you're saying he's gay?
Like my boy tells me...
How about the poster child for this, Troy O'Leary?
Dude, every RBI player is white. I'm not really sure what you guys are talking about. Fuckin weirdos.
just outta curiosity taco, did you also think that every player was grossly overweight??
I was surprised when I found out that Gary Carter was black.
Mookie Wilson is black????
Whaaa??

Well, not so much... although the RBI characters were pretty accurate for Puckett and Gwynn.
And to whoever else it was up there, how the hell would I know "Andre" was a black guy's name? I was something like 8 years old. I suppose I also should've known "Weinberg" or "goldstein" would be Jewish names.. Yeesh.
imagine the shock of finding out that real baseball bats aren't curved and colored.
Edit - Remoed monster-sized sig pic...
Sorry, capt_taco, that was me - I just thought it was funny, and of course you're right. No offense was intended.
Uh, could we not attach pictures to every post that have no relevance? Particularly when they're that big ...

Agreed... Some attachment pics are fine in small doses. But super-size pics are not going to fly unless they are relevant to the discussion. No offense...
The pic has been removed....

I'm speechless, you didn't know who any of these guys were? Am I just getting old?

Well, I'd heard of most of these guys but never really seen them or noticed whether they were white or black, I guess. I was into baseball as much as the next kid; I don't know, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.
Taco I totally understand where you're coming from... i was THREE years old when RBI was released, and grew up playing the game with little more knowledge than the New York Mets team (who happen to be in the game)... I too remember being caught off-guard the first time I saw that some of these players were black.. I mean it isn't rational to assume that everyone in that game is white, but i was a freakin little kid... it wasn't rational that I buried my parents car keys either.. your point is well-taken, although it was really too long ago for me to remember who specifically jolted me by not being white..
I still think Whitaker was the biggest surprise for me, since the first four letters of his name are the first four letters of "W-H-I-T-E."
Yeah, it's silly, but then again so are a lot of things little kids think.
For example, to this day, when I think of McGwire, Canseco, Valenzuela or Saberhagen, I sometimes envision the six-letter names McGwir, Cansco, Vlnzla and Sbrhgn. Whatever.
QuoteI partied with Khalil Green at Clemson not too long ago. He doesn't have much of a problem picking up chicks, to put it mildly.
I was at the Reds-Padres game last night and he doesn't have much of a problem singlehandedly destroying the Reds either.
Also getting back to the names, we were talking about how for the longest time we never knew Danny Graves was Vietnamese.

Actually, Baines, Graves is half Filipino.
Donnie Moore was black?!?! Damn, seriously never knew that. Didn't think that black people commited suicide.
hey guys, sorry for the jumbo-tron sized picture, it was actually a mistake. i apologize. i had meant to put a different one in. ....ah, fuck it.

Didn't know that. Actually I think I had always just seen where he was born in Vietnam and assumed.

hey, whether we're black or white, brown or yellow, we all bleed the same blood, right donnie? ...donnie? DONNIE!!!
I saw a picture of Pettis a couple weeks ago...and the fucker was black!!! I had no idea...I had always assumed he was white.
But I'm still not gonna let the cheesedick hit.
Bump for BeeJay, see the original list, to me, unbelievable
That is pretty ignorant not to realize that Pettis was black, I mean, just look at his speed on the basepaths.....brings up another interesting trivia question:
Fastest white player in the game??
Gotta be Kirk Gibson hands down

Surely (Shirley) you don't think Gibson is faster than Coleman???
I think Trammell is the same speed as KG, as well.

LEN DYKSTRA
Coleman ain't white there kiiiiid.....
a winner is you.
i think it's:
dykstra
gladden
trammell + gibby
Yeah but he does throw firecrackers at people...
...oops, I didn't see the "white" qualification on that one. :(

nice Pro Wrestling reference. There is no way Dykstra is faster than Gibson, and I don't think Gladden is faster than Kimmy Gibler either for that matter
After dykstra was posted, I looked at the stats, and I was right.
Dykstra - 142
Gladden - 140
Trammell, Gibson - 138.
Numbers don't lie.
Hey Defen, where do those numbers come from????
I honestly don't understand, can you explain??
I dont know how you could not know the race of any RBIer. Unless you didnt follow baseball then, or you were 4yrs old.

The website which forums you are visiting. The team pages have all the stats grabbed from the ROM.

Thanks for the bump ultimate. I can't believe it either. I'm only 23, and I remember seeing almost all of these guys play. Guys like Pettis make sense, since most of us would have never heard of them without rbi, but Andre Dawson and Kirby Puckett? Amazing.
Didn't you guys collect baseball cards as a kid? If you did during the rbi years, you'd know!
yeah, but I am not sure they are accurate for the NES version, I really don't think that Gladden is faster than Gibson in the NES version, maybe he is faster in a 100 yard dash, but I really think that Gibson is a better baserunner, and it shows when stealing bases
I once heard that Jack Morris was the fastest man on the '84(I think that was the year) Tigers.

The ROM which the stats are grabbed from is the NES version. They are one and the same.
I believe you, i'm just not buying it. I feel like Gladden gets hosed when running the bases whereas Gibson takes second easily.....maybe opponents focus more on the leadoff hitter than the #2 hitter???
Who knows??? Thanks for the info defen!

He was used as a pinch runner quite a bit, as can be inferred from his record at baseball-reference. A bunch of runs scored, with no at-bats or anything to go along with them.
The speed stats are accurate, like I said Blyleven it'll take awhile to have some RBI truths debunked....
This thread is amazing.
I am very disapointed that I have not been mentioned in this thread.
well, for what it's worth, every person I know named "erhajj" is black.
i know i was shocked (and a little bit appalled)
Appalled that you now have negro taint?

Just found out that Ralph Garr was black
Donnie Moore, I probably didn't know he was black because I wasn't familiar with the player.
Did you know he was dead?
:(
I will always remember this card as its the first time I saw flip up glasses and it made him look badass:

Looks alot like Richard Pryor in the first pic
I always assumed Dan Driessen was white until I saw a baseball card recently. He played into the era that I collected cards, but I had no recollection.

He looks like a Disco version Devon White. Which would also be an awesome nickname.
Love the old discussions - guy who didn't know that Kirby Puckett and Andre Dawson were black and another guy who didn't want to believe the raw speed numbers pulled out of the ROMs.
