Title: What retro year would make a great R.B.I. ROM?
Post by: Turd on 04/30/13, 01:10:10 PM
I got to talking recently about running a league with older-school rosters...soemthing from like 1957, or even earlier like 1913 or something.  Since I can now practically generate a base ROM from any year in MLB history that has good enough stats with it, it made me ponder the question, if you could choose any year to be made into an RBI ROM, what would it be?

For me, 1957 with the Milwaukee Braves winning the World Series would be awesome...

I know you didn't say recently, but the first thing that pops to mind is the Sosa/McGwire inflated numbers year or that era.  So much power...

Well, any year is actually a relevant answer cause it wouldn't be difficult to put that together...that would be a fun year, and would definitely give me reason to put some people over the 954 mark, which is something I don't do in my ROMs usually.

Yeah, any year from the "steroid era" would make for lots of offensive fireworks (particularly if your formulas are based on raw home run numbers).  2001 Bonds would be pretty ridiculous as well.

The early to mid thirties had some impressive offense levels, which might be interesting, although I think the inflation tended to be in batting average over raw power; big run-scoring environment.  Dead ball would be a much different sort of game - low power, but I think there were greater levels of steals and triples, so you could end up with a bunch of teams kind of like the RBI Cardinals.

I think we had this discussion before, but RBI covered two years, which had 8 different teams in the league championship series' for those years.  So it would need to be a two-year span where no teams repeated their appearance at an LCS.

Any year in which John Tudor is not an active MLB'er.

If you pick a year prior to 1969-70, you'd need either a four-year span or to just pick the top two teams, since there were no divisions.

Or, since we have a 30-team ROM available, we can include all of the teams. Badow!

Personally for me 84,85,86,88 or 89 would be nice. I could do a 69 rom. The year Mets won World Series with Nolan Ryan & Tom Seaver

My personal favorite for obvious reasons is 1982...
