Mentioned on AG, but deserves it's own thread here.
How many total RBI deaths is that now? Will do a front page update.
I believe that makes 143 dead RBI players.
Jesus Fucking Christ. Taking rest of day off.
Had a 2 homer game with him this weekend. He and Schmidt were my favorite players growing up. Fucking tobacco.
Is that how he got the cancer?
That's what he blames it on, at least: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/16/hall-of-famer-tony-gwynn-has-died-at-54/

Yes, saliva gland cancer.
Awful. I hate cancer. Tony was always one of my favorites. He started out right around the time when I was all baseball, all the time as a kid.
That limited edition Wendy's plaque ain't lookin so expensive now, IS IT!

Some of you might not know this but he is the dad of Tony Gwynn Jr.

Legitimate LOL here.
This is a great short Gwynn legacy video by ESPN:

Unbelievable stat: Tony Gwynn hit .302 with two strikes for his career. No one else in baseball history is above .265.

Here I thought it was a coincidence.
Keith Olbermann's eulogy for Gwynn on his show last night was terrific:

Not surprisingly Olbermann managed to make a eulogy about Tony Gwynn, about Keith Olbermann.
Thanks for sharing beefmaster, that was great.

No way that's true, but if it is that's fucking amazing.
Pitchcount stats like that have only been kept since 1988 (sort of like caught stealing and intentional walks have only been tracked since the 1950s). The "all-time" leaders for batting average with two strikes is therefore:
.302 Gwynn
.262 Boggs
.261 Polonia
.259 Pierre
.259 Suzuki
.258 Helton
Guys like Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig don't make the list because we don't have pitchcount data on them.
Here's another great story about Gwynn (http://deadspin.com/i-was-tony-gwynns-bat-boy-1592123043), from a guy who was a Padres bat boy.

Count stats began in 1988 (so they missed his 1st 5 seasons and they don't have others in history). But it is true since 1988, Boggs is 2nd at .262

I guess I should have gone to the 2nd page, also I came here to post this excellent article, with some nice mentions of Will Clark and Benito.
Some touching words about Tony Gwynn from Vin Scully.

Don't be a homer, he related his experience as he had some relevant, interesting special memories to share and I don't think it detracted from honoring Gwynn.
