Title: 2 player RBI tourney this weekend
Post by: TbT on 05/11/15, 12:44:18 PM
Played this tourney with a friend over the weekend.  Will post full recap later tonight.  Had I think 3 games go extra frames, including a 13 inning affair.

-Set up a random bracket with teams seeded 1-10
-Higher seed is home/bats last
-Single elimination until the championship round
-1 starting pitcher, and he's not available for the next game
-Championship round is best of 3 series
-Winner of game, has choice of his team in the next match-up through out the competition until the championship round

AL @ HOU:  Saberhagen and Kerfeld take the hill.
-McGwire opens the game with a double to right.  With Mac on 3rd base, Canseco grounds to 2nd, but a bop scores McGwire.  1-0 AL.
-Bot 2nd, Reynolds double down 3rd baseline drives in a run.  Kerfeld infield single drives in another run.  Houston leads 2-1.

-Top 4th AL gets runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, but Nolan Ryan comes out of the pen to put out the fire.
-Top 8th, Molitor PH home run knots it up at 2.

-Bot 8th, Cruz with a bloop double to left, and Davis with a liner to left center scores him.  3-2 Houston.
-In the 9th Canseco singles with 1 out, but Dave Smith gets the save getting Franco out.

MIN @ NL:  Viola and Suttcliffe start the game.
-Murphy homers in 1st inning for NL.
-top 2nd, Bruno doubles off the centerfield wall, and Gagne single drives him in.  1-1.
-Bot 2nd, Raines K's with bases loaded.

-Bot 5th, Gwynn is stranded on 3rd base with 1 out.
-Top 7th, Hrbek with a solo, and MIN leads 2-1.
-Bot 7th, Gwynn tags on Murphy fly out to center to tie it up.  2-2.

-Top 11th, Min has 1st and 2nd with 1 out and strands runners.
-Bot 12th, Murphy hits walk off HR.  NL wins 3-2.

Tigers become heavy favorite in their half with AL eliminated.
Boston/NL super match-up awaits.  NL saved Fernando for game with Boston, and strategy nearly cost them against Minnesota.
Cal/SF will be Witt vs Krukow for a trip to the semi-finals.

HOU @ NY.  Kerfeld and Orosco take the hill.

Bottom 1st.  Wilson with a single to the hole at short and Hernandez with a double to right center to drive him in.  1-0 Mets.

Top 3rd, Puhl with a double to lead off the inning, but is stranded at 2nd base.

Top 6th, Hatcher with a single to left and Gooden comes in.   Cruz with an infield single gets runners on 1st and 2nd.  Lopes hits into a force out at 2nd .  1st and 3rd with one out and G Davis hits into an inning ending double play.

Gooden keeps the Stros in check the rest of the way and New York adances 1-0 despite being outhit 4 to 3.

St. Louis @ Detroit.  Tudor vs Alexander.

Pitchers duel as the 1st hit of the game is an Evans single in the bottom of the 4th.
Cards have some chances but Pena K's in the 5th with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the inning.  Coleman gets stranded on 3rd in the 6th inning.

Bottom of the 6th, Brookens leads off and pops to center but its bopped.  Brookens gets stranded at 3rd.

Bottom of the 8th, Dayley comes in for Tudor and surrenders a first pitch homer to left from Lemon.  1-0 Tigers.

Top of the 9th, Coleman and Ozzie lead off with singles and no outs.  Hernandez clamps down on the rest of the Cards and the Tigers get a 1-0 win.

Mets and big game Bob Ojeda will face Tigers and Jack Morris in the Semi-Final.
Tigers had pitched Doyle in the opener vs Cardinals so he would be available for the championship round if they advanced there.
Mets had saved Ojeda for their likely semi final round match-up with the Tigers.

Wow, two 1-0 games!  Would've been cool to see the Cards pull the upset, or at least figure out how to bring Coleman around in the 9th.

We hadn't played in a few months, so therefore I think the hitters were ahead of the pitchers in the opening round game.  Especially with HOU/AL, but not necessarily MIN/NL. But those weren't exactly slugfests anyways.  Under usual circumstances HOU isn't belting out 3 runs (VS AL's staff of all teams) and threatening in a few other innings.

I'm headed out for vacation tomorrow to Colorado.  I'll try to recap the CAL/SF & BOS/NL games tonight before I leave.

Cal/SF was a game of their best starters.  Witt vs Krukow.  Teams were too evenly matched to chance running the 2nd starter out there in hopes of having the ace on the hill against either Boston or NL.   Detroit, and NY could play that game against HOU/STL....but Cal/SF really can't.

I did a search and it looks like I never documented our 3 person RBI Royal rumble here either.  Maybe after vacation I'll throw those results up on here as well.

Format for the RBI RR:  2 teams randomly face each other in opening game.  Winner faces next random team.  1 SP rules apply and he's not available for the next game.  Goes 9 games through all the teams.

Couldn't help but comment as my "namesake" appears in this thread.  "Bottom of the 8th, Dayley comes in for Tudor and surrenders a first pitch homer to left from Lemon.  1-0 Tigers."  By (my) definition, this is the RBI effect we call "The Greeter".  Never proven or tested.   But having witnessed this effect countless times, we now RARELY put the first pitch by a pitcher anywhere near the plate - more times than not, ESPECIALLY in a clutch situation, it gets hammered out of the park.  Should you be foolish enough to be a victim of this, you have to be ready to yell "THE GREETER" !!!!  ROTFL.

Wow, I've been gone from this forum a long time.  Welcome back, me.  Got to stop all this work shit <grin>.

Greeter! Good to see you.

I've noticed the "Greeter" phenomenon in RBI '14 as well - seems like a new pitcher is a great time for a long ball.
