I went with Puckett for similar reasons.  First of all, 223 hits is huge.  31 homers and 96 RBI are solid too.  Most of these guys are pretty even as far as the offensive numbers go, but Puckett also earned a Gold Glove.  All-Around, I'd say he had the best season.

Pitchers rarely get the MVP, but when they do, they also get the CY Young Award.  The first Cy Young was awarded in 1956, and Don Newcombe won it and the MVP.

Bob Gibson and Denny McClain did it in 1968, and Sandy Koufax did it in 1963.

Before 1956, 13 pitchers won their league's MVP.

All of this shows that it has become increasingly harder for a pitcher to win the MVP award.  It happened in Mickey Mantle's era, but Clemens is an anomoly when it comes to the post-1980 era of baseball.

Good Call, BDawk.

Between Puckett, Boggs, and Clemens, I could easily go with any of them

It'd be too easy to just give it to the guy that won the MVP.  :)

Boggs of these choices.  Tim Raines and Mike Schmidt, in the NL.
