I don't know if anyone ever bunts, but I've noticed that Lou Whitaker is a pretty good bunter. I've even called him the best in the game. If he plays like ass his three first at-bats, I force him to bunt--with moderate success.
Who is the best bunter?
your thoughts.
bunting for a hit is next to impossible... unless playing a newbie or the cpu... however, i put the bunt on when playing with teams that have to manufacture runs..ie houston and st. louis... i wouldnt recomend it for basehits though.
How do you guys normally bunt (for a hit)? Do you just stick the bat out there in the half-swing position while the pitcher is in the wind-up?
I find I have more success bunting for a hit when I actually take a swing at the pitch, but stop the swing in the bunt position. Kind of like a check swing bunt.
I agree Big Hath, this method, although tricky to master, is fairly successful. If you do it correctly you should bunt the ball right down the line either fair or foul (it's foul most of the time). I believe bunting this way reduces the occurrance of the ever frustrating bunt back to the pitcher.
Welcome back Gwynn and congrats!
I agree with what's been said - a normal "bunt" is worthless. My technique is to start all the way inside and break outside on the pitch. You then do a semi-normal swing hit the ball at the VERY end of the bat and it'll hopefully roll down the 3rd base lline. That being said, it isn't too effective but it's what I usually go for with my pitchers...
I would say that I bunt with the pitchers about 50% of the time with about a 33%-40% on-base percentage. I don't think that's too bad so I'm going to keep doing it.
Right down the line baby.

a pitcher is the only player that bunting makes sense... they are either going to pop out or slap it back to the pithcer... thus, a bunt will keep you out of a twin killing.
I never bunt with pitchers. I don't ever bunt period for that matter. But the reason I never bunt with pitchers is because I always have a stroke of luck where they just pop it over the shortstop but too far in front of the fielder for an easy single. But if the situation calls for a bunt, a pitcher would be the person you'd want up to step up to the plate. I agree with Gwynn 3K.
