Title: I BOUGHT AN RBI ARCADE GAME for $5
Post by: Ray on 10/17/02, 03:54:10 PM
Here’s the story, and all of it is true I swear!

I was driving to the dump 4weeks ago when my girlfriend said ‘lets stop at that garage sale’ to which I said no way.  But she told me she saw an Arcade video game, so I said we would stop by on the way back.  After the dump we drove up to the place, but because I was driving I couldn’t read the title of the video game, but it did look familiar..  We joked with each other about the thousands of different video games around, and how there was no way that it would RBI…but lo’ and behold when I walked aroudd the corner it was as if an angel had appeared with a spotlight shinning down on the game...it was RBI.

I looked at the game, which wasn’t in that bad of shape, missing a few buttons and all, and the screen didn’t work.  I joked around with the guy and he said he was gonna take it to the dump so if I wanted it he would sell it to me for $5…can you believe that?  So about 6.5 seconds I was the proud owner of a non-working RBI arcade game.  I then spent about $10 on wood to shore up the foundation of the unit and sent it off to my local arcade restoration shop for fixing.

3 weeks later, for a grand total of $310, I own a working, actual RBI Arcade game.  So because my gal “forced” me to make a dump run, and because we took the back roads because there was traffic on the freeway, and because I actually listened to her about there being an arcade game there, and because some dude sold me a game for $5, I now own RBI baseball complete with all buttons, controls, sounds, players, and even a marquee at the top of the game.
MIRACLES DO HAPPEN.

My gal and I always make mad dump runs, we are your everyday, high class, white trash!
Seriously, I cut down all the bushes and trees in her yeard, and we were going to the dump and then to grab some lunch.  What a lukcy gal to be with a guy who takes her to the dump and Subway.

PS> Thanks Pines.  I plan on having people over for the W.S> game on SAT., and Im sure a game or two will be in the offing.

Congrats!  Sounds like you got the stand-up version, right?  Don't think you can have a marquee on the cocktail version....

What kind of stuff does one get in a dump run?
I don't even know where the nearest dump is.

Yes I did get teh stand up  version of the game.  I find it humerous that you all find the "Dump" part of the story so interesting.  To calrify, I did NOT buy the game at the dump, and every good/handy guy should know where the dump is.
You gotta keep your eye open at the dump for a CHAIR that you can use while playing the game, not for the game itself!

Also I was told by teh company that did the work that this game can easily be adapted to play others such as Mario Bros. or Excitibike for a $50 mother board.

I must say, that is a tremendous story. The idea of standing and playing RBI does sound quite tiring to me though. Im a huge fan of sitting down, kicking my feet up, getting a huge bag of badly oiled potato chips and getting the controlers greasy as hell. Then again, if I had the arcade verion, id imagine I would be inches away from the screen with as much enthusiasm as my greatest 14 inning game. you also cant throw the controls which is a plus.

congrats on youur score there bibleboy.  the only thing i dont like about the arcade version is that it was made for dwarves...  i get a creek in my back adjusting my body to see the screen.  nonetheless, it is impressive that you found the game a such an incredible bargain.  pines paid a ridiculous amount and his didnt work when he got it either.

i am a traditionalist preferring the tengen version.

I'm 6 ft. 3 myself and the game is on the short side.  I am working on fanricating a new base for the unit, instead of just a 2x4 on its side its goind to be 10 inches high, that should solve the problem.  Truth be told, I get so into the game Im usually all bent over anyway.

Actually now we don't stand and play anymore, we have bar stools that we sit on to play, we have placed them in spots so each person is the same distance from the middle and much easier on your neck and back.  Joe has no idea about this because he refuses to play the Atari version.
