Title: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 04:00:24 PM
If time allows, I am going to run the Harry Spilman Experiment tonight.  The objective is to help determine if Pat Sheridan's worthlessness comes from his player rating, Gantry's undying devotion to him, his 80's Dad glasses, or because he is named Pat.  If it is his player rating, then Harry Spilman should suffer a similar fate of worthlessness when subbed in to 'start' over the course of a season.  Thank you to Shooty for the suggestion.  My goal would be to start the Spilman Experiment at about 8:00pm Eastern tonight.  Stay tuned...

Fun Fact:

Harry Spilman's actual given first name is William, yet he chose to go by Harry.  Odd choice

Random Fact:

Harry Spilman played 12 seasons over which he played in nearly 563 total games and had 813 hits producing 192 hits.  By contrast, Ichiro played his 1st 12 seasons with the Mariners and averaged more hits per season than Spilman had for his career.

Not really, but the Spilman Experiment is about to begin

Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 06:47:15 PM
Though Jose Uribe would be a much more logical choice to sub, I want to keep things as consistent as possible.  I cannot justify subbing Spilman for Will Clark, so he will sub in for Bob Brenly in the 6 hole.  Brenly will assume managerial duties

Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 06:48:21 PM
Spilman has his first at bat aaaaaaaaaaaand

RBI double to the gap.

1-1
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 06:54:45 PM
Spilman comes up again in the 5th

SOLO JACK!

2-2 with 2 RBI and a homer.

Can't make any declarations yet, but Harry Spilman came to play.  It's crucial too because the rest of the Giants bats have been pretty quiet.  The only other RBI so far is for Will Clark driving in Uribe on an error
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:01:53 PM
Spilman's 3rd at bat was a little less exciting,  it helped spark a big 6th inning.  Single to left en route to a 6 run inning.  He should get 1 more at bat this game

3-3; 1 homer
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:05:02 PM
Spilman hits a single to right in his 4th at bat.  He and Chili Davis get stranded.  11-3 in the 8th.  Decent chance that Spilman gets a 5th at bat
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:07:25 PM
12-3, 8th inning.  Spilman up with 2 out and bases loaded.  Not exactly a pressure situation, but he is trying to show up Pat Freaking Sheridan, folks!
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:08:25 PM
Spilman makes his first out of the season.  He lines out to 2nd to end the inning.  Barring a huge 9th inning, Spilman will finish 4-5 with 1 homer vs CA
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:13:52 PM
Giants win 12-5.  Spilman is 4-5 with a home run.  In fact, he was the only Giant to go yard.  Clark and Mitchell were close, but theirs hit the wall.  Next up, Boston
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:16:36 PM
Spilman vs Clemens with 2 out in the top of the 1st.  Inning extended when Will Clark's easy fly to center bonked off the fielders head.  Spilman takes the next pitch into the right field bleachers.

1-1 in the game; 5-6 overall with 2 home runs
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:22:36 PM
Spilman gets another shot at Clemens with Clark on second.  However, a much different result.  Ground out to 3rd.  Clark advances

1-2  vs BO; 5-7 on the day
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:26:58 PM
Spilman's 3rd at bat be Boston was very Sheridan like.  Seeing eye hit through the left side.  Rolls to the wall and good for an RBI double.  It is the most Sheridany that Spilman has looked all night

2-3 vs BO and 6-8 on the night with 2 homers
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:31:30 PM
In Spilman's 4th, and probably final, at bat be Boston, he flies out lazily to right.  It's 9-0 in the 7th so his stat line will likely rest at
2-4 in the game and 6-9 overall with 2 home runs.  A good start for William Harry Spilman
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:35:08 PM
Reuschel got gassed in the 8th and we gave up a run, so it is 10-1 and Spilman will get his 5th at bat after all
Title: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:37:58 PM
Spilman's surprise 5th at bat vs Boston was another double to left.

3-5 vs Boston and 7-10 with 2 home runs overall.

Reuschel went the distance giving up 2 runs on 7 hits (only 1 hit through 7 innings though).

Power was back on as Spilman, Leonard, Maldonado and Mitchell all went deep
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:42:05 PM
Spilman comes up with 2 out in the 1st vs Detroit.  Will Clark hit a 2 run homer right before him.  Spilman grounds out to 2nd to end the inning

0-1 va DT; 7-11 overall with 2 homers
Title: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 07:50:08 PM
Spilman has fallen back to earth a bit.  Pop out to the pitcher.

That puts him at 0-2 vs Detroit and 7-12 overall

On another note, I came as close as I have ever seen to hitting the fabled pitcher home run.  I am not a believer in the pitcher home run, but Mike Krukow laid into one and it had the distance, but curved foul.  It would have either hit the wall or been a wallzie had it stayed fair.  My heart stopped when I first saw the ball jump.  That would have made for a very controversial addition to The Spilman Experiment

Spilman continues to struggle vs Detroit, though he hit the ball hard this time.  Lines out to 2nd, but now 0-3 vs DT and 7-13 on the night

Tigers being in Guillermo 'Willie' Hernandez and it turns out that a lefty is just what Spilman needed.  He rips a 1 out double to right to push to 1-4 vs Detroit and 8-14 overall with 2 homer runs
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment

Why not create a ROM with a team of all spilmans vs all sheridans.    Pick a random pitcher and make that guy the entire staff of both teams.
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:07:07 PM
Spilman has a pretty disappointing game vs DT.  Grounds out to short in his final at bat to go 1-5.  Now 8-15 on the night.  1st game without a home run and 1st game without multiple hits.  We will see how he bounces back
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment

Next up is Minnesota
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:11:59 PM
Man....Spilman LOVES having Will Clark on 2nd.  He takes Frank Viola deep for a 2 run homer.

1-1 vs Minnesota with 1 home run; 9-16 overall with 3 home runs (please recall that Sheridan hit only 5 home runs total in 2 full Sheridan Experiment seasons)
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:16:26 PM
Though having Will Clark on 2nd base again, Spilman's 2nd at bat has a different result.  He hits the ball hard, but right at the pitcher.  Luckily, Clark is not doubled off

1-2 vs MN; 9-17 on the night with 3 home runs
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:20:48 PM
Spilman's 3rd at bat vs Minnesota will likely be his last as Frank Viola isn't fooling anyone.  Spilman hits a triple to left pushing the score to 13-0 in the 3rd

2-3 vs MN; 10-18 overall with 3 home runs
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:22:29 PM
Reuschel makes quick work of the Twins and the game ends after 3 innings.  After getting 5 at bats in each of the 1st 3 games, Spilman settles for 3 in this one
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 08:26:37 PM
Spilman vs Nolan Ryan winds up in an embarrassing strike out.  Ryan goes from throwing 101 to a 64 mph drop ball.  Spilman swung over it.
0-1 vs HO and 10-19 overall

Spilmn vs Shrdan has been loaded into the nightwulf editor.

2 for 1 update.  Spilman records 2 more hits.  1 down the 3rd base line and the other down the 1st base line.  No power yet vs HO as of yet

2-3 vs HO; 12-21 overall

Another 2 for 1 update (trying to keep things moving as it is getting late).  Spilman manages 2 more hits, but they are both very 'Sheridan-esque.'  Both seeing eye hits.  Power seems to be eluding Harry in mid-season where it seemed abundant in the early going.

2-2 vs NY; 16-25 on the night

Spilman rips one down the line in his 3rd at bat.  Hits the wall hard.  Easy double...or so I thought. Damn is he slow.  Barely beat the throw,  urbis bow 3-3 vs NY and 17-26 overall
Title: Re: The Spilman Experiment
Post by: edfan on 09/13/18, 09:02:39 PM
Spilman gets another seeing eye single in what will probably be his 4th and final at bat.

4-4 vs NY but with no power.  18-27 overall with 3 homers so far.  3 games to go

Spilman comes up in his favorite spot.  2 out with Will Clark on 2nd.  Spilman gets a hit, but Clark gets gunned down trying to score.

1-1 vs STL; 19-28 overall.  Spilman has put quite a few hits together, but is not hitting for any power

SPILMAN!!! Once again, with Will Clark on 2nd, Spilman takes Danny Cox deep to put the Giants back in the lead 4-2.  This puts him at 2-3 on the game and 20-30 on the night with 4 home runs

Giants are not intimidated by AL at all.  Mitchell, Leonard, Maldonado, and Clark all hit home runs in a row.  Spilman came up to make it 5 in a row, but only managed a line shot double off the wall.

2-2 vs AL; 22-34 overall

Spilman leads off the 2nd with the Giants in unfamiliar territory...down 4-1.  Krukow got touched up pretty bad in the 1st.  Spilman doesn't help anything and grounds out to short.  0-1 and 22-35 on the night

Spilman, in his 2nd at bat, drives the ball deep to center, but Tim Freaking Raines is there again to poo in my Cheerios.  Spilman is 0-2 and the Giants can't do anything right.  Down 5-1 and I could actually lose to the computer.  I can't recall the last time that happened.  I was probably in middle school

Spilman comes up with a chance to tie the cane, but only manages a single.  Robbie Thompson drives him in to tie the game, though.  Giants finally get something going and lead 6-5 in the 6th.  Spilman is 1-3 vs NL and 23-37 overall with 4 home runs.  He will likely see 2 more at bats this season

Spilman goes 1-4 be NL and 23-38 overall hitting 4 home runs.

Here are my musings on SF

Uribe - no power with an amazing lack of speed for a leadoff man.  What  a piece of crap this guy is

Mitchell - I started mentally referring to Kevin Mitchell as 'Balls to the Wall.'  Nearly every at bat, he would hit the ball to the wall.  Sometimes, it would barely clear the wall.  Sometimes, it would hit the wall.  Sometimes, it would fall short and be caught

Leonard - he is one bad mother.  Don't mess with Jeffrey.  He hits the ball hard almost every time

Maldonado - surprisingly better than I remembered.  Decent power and consistent.  I used to sub him out when playing SF

Clark - the model for consistency.  Great power, great contact.

Spilman - the man of the hour. The guy who brought us together for the evening.  I think Spilman is worthy of a start.  He showed some power.  I was hoping for a bit more, but 23 hits and 4 home runs over 9 games is not too shabby

Davis - I am a huge Chili Davis fan in real life and on RBI.  He was a major disappointment tonight, though.  Mitchell through Spilman all had at least 4 homers each.  Not one single home run from Chili this season.  I expected more.  He hit okay and he is way faster than I remembered on this game

Thompson -  waste of space.  The pitchers hit more consistently than him.  No power, no speed, little contact.  Great combo for the guy hitting in front of the pitcher.  When it was Thompson, Pitcher, Uribe, I was better off trying to bunt for a hit every time

Krukow - I used to believe Krukow to be the best pitcher in the game.  What the heck was I thinking?  He was mediocre at best this season, although he provided some brief excitement when i thought a ball he hit was going to be the elusive pitcher home run

Reuschel - opposite of Krukow.  Dude was dealing every game.  Way better than I remembered

Garrelts and Robinson - like having clones coming in from the pen.  Basically, they're the same guy.  Solid for 2 innings.  If you can't get through 6 innings with Krukow or Reuschel, you may be in trouble

Very possible. I sucked it up hitting and pitching in that game.  I was lucky to win.  All their runs came off of homers.  2 by Raines.  A 3 run shot by Schmidt and a 2 run shot by Eric Davis.

Conclusion:

After playing 2 seasons with Sheridan and 1 with Spilman, I can say that they are fairly similar players.  Sheridan didn't seem to hit the ball as hard as often as Spilman. That was the major difference to me.  Most of PS' hits were dribblers that, in the absence of computer AI, would be outs.  Spilman, on the other hand, consistently hit the ball hard.  Unfortunately, sometimes it was hit right at a fielder
