Title: NES Emulators
Post by: Gantry on 09/16/18, 08:30:37 AM
Just wanted to revisit this for the 2018 edition.  What are you all using?   I've stuck to FCEUX but it's bascially been on the same version for many many years and it a bit quirky working on some of my Win10 machines.  Especially with my multiple monitor setups and/or going full screen.

What's the current steeze for emulation?

Thanks turd, I'll give Nestopia a whirl.  Used it in the past, heck it's probably still in my games folder.

Interesting about OpenEmu, is it something like HyperSpin where it's basically a front end and still uses specific emulators behind the scenes?

Nesbox works great for me

Fceux works great.

Using virtual nes to help darky with the league and it works great but the colors are less brilliant than the others.

Because I'm a difficult mofo, I tend to use either the Nestopia core in RetroArch or higan (https://byuu.org/emulation/higan/) for my needs.  Both run nicely on this aging laptop just fine.

The go-to emulator these days is nestopia.

I tried NEStopia - couldn't find a build newer than 2008, when I open the program it keeps asking to create subfolders in my docs (which it never can do) and the screenshots give me an unsupported format.  Is there a newer version out there which actually knows that Windows 10 exists?  It played fine once I was in it but having to deal with the "do you want to create X directory" like 8 times on every start is annoying.

There is not a new one around, other than one that Brud hacked so people couldn't turbo in NES games.  However, the reason it's not able to create the folders is probably because you're on windows and it needs administrator access.  Once it creates the folders, you're fine.  If yous till can't get it to work, I can give you a zip of the thing with the folders already created.

I should also mention that I recommend NESTopia because that's what the online community uses. Perhaps there are better ones that are available for offline, single player mode.  That said, Nestopia is pretty standard and holds up over time.  It has some good color correction and whatnot as well, and has high compatibility with most NES games.

It's not admin access, can't properly deduce my Windows10 user name because I have a MS account.  Trying to create folders in c:\users\gantry when the folder name is c:\users\gantr - I could use mklink and the like to make it work though but I'll try the other options first just to see what's out there and aware of more recent OSes and DirectX versions.  Did actually emulate without issues though, even in full screen, which FCEUx barfed on with my triple monitor setup.

I am having an issue with Nestopia.  Had been working fine, now when I launch the app, it doesn't run.  I can see the task is running but I see nothing.  Maybe I should just uninstall/reinstall.

Any recent major updates, like Win11, or a recent minor Windows update maybe? You could try a rollback of that and see if it fixes it, although eventually I'm guessing you'll need to keep your Windows current.

I haven't done a ton of playing on emulators lately (mostly either real NES or Switch), so I can't remember for sure what emulator I have on my Surface... I'll double-check that and see if it still works, too.

the first emulator i used was nestor mapper support. my buddy gather up all the roms we collectively downloaded and put them on a disc. and then we installed that and all 600+ roms on a hidden folder on each of the new school computers we got in 6th grade

Reinstalling did work.  I am going to blame the kids for messing it up somehow.
