Title: RBI Philosophy
Post by: sucka free on 11/19/02, 07:00:42 PM
Question....once RBI no longer has a major league representative (and my guess will be in 2 years), will the game itself suffer a setback in popularity?

Hmm... good question. I'm going to say no. Classic games never die. RBI will always be around, at least at this site.

I don't think it will, either.  I mean, who plays the game and says "I'm gonna pick the Red Sox because they have two active major leaguers left, and the Angels don't have any!"?

Somebody will always play in the bigs. Clemens may play until he's 97. I'd like to see guys come out of retirement too. Maybe Pat Sheridan?

The popularity of RBI will decrease when the current generation of players get old.  Most current RBI players are 21-29 and remember playing the game as a kid.  Most of today's youth don't own a NES, and it'll only get worse.  We remember the players and remember the game.  It'll hopefully never die, but I don't see too many RBI diehards in another 10 years....

We have definitely got the roots of a "community" going online.  I think getting some orgainized online leagues up and running will get many a people back into RBI....

10-4 on that....we could even have online leagues where the winners of certain leagues get the invite to the tournament.  Now that would kick some some ass

Right you are. You don't see people our age playing pong.

I think even though there are few guys still playing, there will be guys either coaching, announcing, or managing teams for plenty more years to come.  Or there are guys like Jesse Orosco, who just signed a contract with the padres, that will be playing till they're 80.  I started R.B.I. when i was around 7 and lost every game.  Until 2 years ago i have finally been able to win at least  40% of my games.  Now im 14 and am some competition for my brother.  Ill keep playing R.B.I. as long as there is somebody to play besides the computer.

yeah the hardest thing is to find people to play rbi with...I KNOW mad people at college park (univ of MD) play it and love it...but its not something that comes up easily in conversation.

rbi always and forever... the key is passing it on to our progeny... to ensure that the legacy continues.

I know I'll be playing RBI for quite some time.  I know this because I like to drink beer.  If I didn't have rbi I would have nothing to drink to because I don't get cable.  And its a perfect game to booz with....there are plenty of breaks to take pulls from.   If I stop drinking, I most likely will not have a need for RBI.  But I can't envision a world where I don't drink so long live RBI

I teach in middle school and I told the kids that I wanted an old nintendo.  Much to my surprise, I now have FIVE NES and somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 games (at no cost to me!!!).  One of the games was RBI 2, which is a good game but not the original.  I recently got one from ebay, though and now I too can play RBI till the day I die.  I checked your web site and found myself laughing out loud remembering the stuff that you were describing.  Good times!

RBI is so great.  It's a classic.  It's the greatest baseball game ever.  I love the good old two dimensional games.  The third dimension is a dimension that video games should have never gone into.

I still play Intellivision football, and that was from 1979.  I think it's the best pure football vid out there.  Video games are getting worse in my opinion (good call on the 3d comment)- I will always play Ribs.
