Title: Heaven vs Hell Games
Post by: OzzieLongBall on 11/12/04, 10:52:59 AM
I thought I'd start this topic to record all our close (and eventuallly, actual) Wins against these 2 monsters.. Last night I came home pretty drunk and tried the game out for the first time at about 4...i got ROCKED... 10 run ruled,  and just in awe of some of the things these guys were doing... i woke up this morning to see if it was just my being drunk, or if these guys are unbeatable.. i think it was a  combination of both.. i just lost 24-14 in the 7th... really frustrating game, I was knocking God around (his pitch count must have been 1000, i fouled off EVERYTHING) but then Abraham came in and really shut the door.. no excuses, but im pretty shitty with the keyboard, and my computer like slowed up and some key at bats leading to strike-outs for me..  i wish i knew how to post the box score, it was a real back and forth slug fest... i loaded the bases against God in the first 4 innings.. thankfully the computer still plays like the computer, and doesnt use their speed to its full potential... the game ended with a basic summation of all that team Heaven is:  the 8 hitter lines one off my pitchers face so hard that my catcher catches it on a fly (no out tho, happened so fast it must have one-hopped to the P)... Noah (i think?) then attempts to steal second, but Abraham pops up to the pitcher... b/c Noah is so damn fast, he is at second before the ball even gets up in the air, so i get the DP... nursing a 9 run deficit, moses comes up and what i think pops one up to the SS, it was moving that slow... the ball never even enters the screen, HR, game over... in retrospect the backbreaker was in the 6th inning with a 1 run lead with 2 outs, their freakin pitcher got a single which started a 9 run rally... oh what coulda been..

I will beat them eventually.  The ultimate win would be to beat them with Houston.  Once I beat them with Minn or SF, I'll try HOU.

Quotei wish i knew how to post the box score

If you're using FCEUltra, hit F9 to take a screen shot - it'll show up in the "snaps" subfolder of wherever you installed FCEUltra.

Getting better, finished a game(no 10 run) I have to figure out how to pitch with Viola, I do OK for Blyleven's 4 innings.

This looks like a most exciting task.  I must play a game when I get home...

Someone link me to the heaven vs hell ROM, I'll try it out and put it on the site...

Lost 2-1 with Houston...

If I hadn't hung 2 pitches...  or had managed more than 1 bunt HR.

Houston is actually a good team to play with - excellent pitching, capable of striking out all 27 batters between Ryan and Scott, and a ton of fast guys who can bunt for hits and steal.

Briznock attached it to a post in the "Playing God" thread

Holy shit, great ROM!   That is fun and is definitely the ultimate computer challenge.  I had no chance...

God's slowball makes me cry...

Take that bitches.

A couple of things:

1. If the starters and relievers had really good staminas, this wouldn't have happened in the 9th inning the way it did.

2. Fastball, good.  Slowball, good.  Curveball?  Not so good.

3. Just goes to prove that, as in real life, good pitching beats good hitting.

Well done Dryden, you have the strikeout down pat...  10 runs is also impressive though.

I didnt even realize i left their stamnia down low.
I fixed it though..... here is the new version with pitchers with ever lasting arms.

For the record, I would replay this and beat it again, except that:

1. If you strike everyone out, no runs is still no runs.

2.  2 of the runs came on bunt homers, which would still happen.

Hence, I am still the king.

Quite impressive

Post by: Dryden on 11/12/04, 04:06:58 PM
Not to steal any of Briznock's thunder, but here is a slightly more modified version - this enables per pitcher batting so that Heaven and Hell's pitchers are also lethal, while removing the pinch hitter bonus (it doesn't help Heaven & Hell any, but it helps when playing them, so it shouldn't be there.)

These are definitely the best hitters, not sure how to make the best pitchers.  Maybe if every pitch came in at 120 mph, but that might also make it easier to time them.

Interesting.  Stamina of 255 is not a good thing, pitchers still tire out pretty easily...  Nightwulf, any idea why this is?

Maybe throwing 120 MPH just takes a lot more out of you :)

NOTE: I know this is not the reason.

I believe that when you hit a pitcher (HRs especially), that pitcher loses stamina no matter what.  Not sure about this, but it is what I have observed.

Um, no.

I never said that.   ;)

Some other interesting things from messing with this ROM:

If you steal more than 1 base on a stolen base attempt (take off from first and run around all of the bases, just cause they're so fast), it still only counts as one stolen base in the stats.

The more power a hitter has, the more likely they are to pop out a bunt to the catcher.  The heaven and hell guys do it almost every bunt attempt.
Title: Re:Heaven vs Hell Games
Post by: Scroope on 11/12/04, 04:28:14 PM
That actually makes sense.  So many power hitting pros can't bunt at all.  I think its funny when I find it much easier to bunt a 95 MPH fastball then to hit one.

Getting closer, left Ryan in 1 batter to long and it cost me a 3 run homer.  I think next time I may do it.

I did it :)

Not nearly as impressive as Dryden, but I did it using the keyboard, so I'm pleased.

Hey, keyboard here too.

But very nicely done.

Dryden, don't settle for CPU RBI when some of us in the city can get together for some intense round robin RBI

I'll take it any way I can get it, y'know?
Title: Re:Heaven vs Hell Games

nobody better be selling this accomplishment short... heaven and hell teams are insane... altho i may have a slightly exagerrated opinion b/c i am so unskilled with the keyboard... but still.. i have to settle for trying to outslug them (which in a roundabout way may actually be more impressive??) b/c i just dont have that edge i usually do with the controller..
Title: Re:Heaven vs Hell Games
Post by: ultimate7 on 11/19/04, 04:24:17 PM
I really struggle without speed pitchers against Hell.  Even guys like Blyleven and Krukow who I usually excel with, the CPU lays off the close ones, I guess they have enough time.  But with Ryan and Clemens, they don't have enough time, plus the curve across always seems to just nip or miss the corner.

See how I struggle after Clemens leaves.  I played without bunting and was able to score a good deal.  Now my challenge is to win with Minn or SF where I have a much tougher time pitching.

If RBI 2 or RBI 3 were hacked with heaven and hell teams, what would the distance on those homers be?

11,000,034,432,236,643,341,456,432,875 feet????

OK, absolutely bizarre:  I finally beat Hell with Minnesota, but I can give little credit to skill, note then number of Walks I received.  Here's what happens, I'm down 7-2 going into the top of the 8th, but I still feel I can win, their SP2 is tiring and I know they will try to leave him in.  I get a couple singles and a walk, followed by a HBP (scored as a walk) to cut it to 7-3.  So bases are loaded and Hell brings in RP1 (Pilot, Right-handed) who promptly decides to quick pitch every pitch from the center of the mound curving outside as far as possible.  So what happens is he walks or hits (Hitting the Righties) about 18 straight batters until he doesn't have enough curve left to throw a ball, I promptly double with Launder to drive in 2 more before the inning ends.  I was able to hold them off in the 8th with no help from Senor Smoke, I finally had to bring in Reardon to close the door.

Anyone ever seen this before, something with the RP coming in with the bases loaded must have set him off.  I'm guessing if I would have swung at any pitch, it may have broke him out of his rythm, it was really strange.

I certainly haven't seen anything like that...

Post by: ultimate7 on 11/23/04, 04:27:15 PM
Another issue is the 15 screwball curve for the pitcher, if for some reason this happened with a real pitcher, the pitch may have been a strike, or just outside.  The really funny part though was the quick pitch, as soon as he had the ball he just fired it, over and over.  I wish I would have been thinking enough to have tried to save state.

I finally downloaded the emulator and tried out this ROM.  I must say that it is impressive.  I just gave up a homerun to Hitler that went so far I had finished laughing and was out of breath by the time the fireworks went off.

Did it first try with STL, great bullpen work, I struggled a bit with Tudor, Cox and Daley were money.  Only Detroit, SF, NY left, though I may have to do Hou again since I instituted the no bunting rule.

nice work, U... have you been able to hold any hitters to an outfield single?  i've done it once.
Title: Re:Heaven vs Hell Games
Post by: ultimate7 on 11/24/04, 01:23:43 PM
Yeah usually hits off the wall so hard, right to one of the OFs, I've done it a couple times.  On the balls down the line, it is a race to the ball to try to hold them to a triple, sometimes.

In addition, I almost threw a guy out on a ground ball to 2B in the last game, had I gotten a strong throw off, I think I would have had him, it just happens so fast, you are not expecting it.

Teddy-  In a Heaven v Hell watch game, I just saw a line drive caught by an OF and a ground out to 2B.

I once had a line drive bounce so hard off my 3b's face that by the time I could get to the ball, the batter rounded the bases for a 4 base error.

Detroit first try also, Jack Morris pitched an exceptional 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, now back to trying SF

Finally did it with SF, took probably a dozen tries (most with me getting slaughtered) but finally got the hang of pitching with Krukow and Reuschel.  Did it with all the original teams except Cali (they aren't on the ROM)

I finally beat Heaven and Hell back to back with the Bosox, making me ruler of the over and under worlds.  This will go down as one of the greatest achievements of mankind.
