Title: VS. Boston
Post by: SmokedUBad13 on 12/21/02, 04:44:49 PM
Which team is Boston's most difficult opponent?

We had a huge discussion as to which team can compete with Boston the best.  I think choosing a team with lefty pitchers is wise since they have so many powerful righty batters.  I find it much easier to pitch around them with the lefties.  So I choose New York or St. Louis.

Who do you think matches up best against Boston?

I think that San Francisco would be.  They seem to have the best curve.  My personal opinion is that it is easier for right handed pitchers to strike out right handed batters and vise versa for lefties.  Since all SF pitchers are right handed and Krukow and Reushel have good curve, that would be my choice

I'd choose Detriot because they have the best line up and can keep up with Boston's bats.

I choose Houston because the hideous uniforms might scare Rice into a poor performance and the weak Houston hitters would lull Boston into a false sense of security as Denny Walling unleashes his wicked bat on the Rocket.

Detroit and California are the only teams similar power to Boston.

I think it was made pretty clear this weekend, especially on the final day, that BO is not the dominant force many think them to be.   In my 3rd place series against Freedman, BO was 0-2, losing once for each of us.  In the two championship series', BO was 0-2 in the first one and I think 1-1 in the second, although it could have been 0-2 (If someone knows the answer, let us know, also let us know who was beating BO in all these games).  They're pitching is WAY overrated and teams like DT, CA, and MN could outslug them, and NY and SF could keep BO's scoring down with good pitching.  Basically, Clemens gives you 5 inn. tops, and probably gives up at least on dong in the process.  Then you've got Hurst, who lefties (guys like Clark, CDavis, Straw, Jackson, Hrbek, Joyner, various PH's) go to town on.   And their final two pitchers, whose names don't deserve to be mentioned, can barely combine to have the stamina to throw two innings.  So that's my take on BO, would like to hear what you all have to think.  If I had a one-game playoff and had to choose one team, it would probably be DT, with MN, CA and SF close behind.

Right on HoJoFan.  This tournament should have cleared up all misconceptions about Boston being the best team.  Their pitching is weak as all hell.  I learned this personally after getting the shit beat out of me (a couple times) after Roger died.

i never thought boston was the best, i just thought i played best with boston.  well, i was wrong.  every time i used boston in the tournament i lost.  so i went to detroit and i won every game with detroit, except for the game where beales kicked the shit out of me like 15 to 1.  i also learned that i completely suck with san fran and new york and i will never use them unless i have to.  california all the way.  houston and st louis suck and shouldnt be in the game. the cubs were better.

I agree.  Boston is a whole lot of fun when its straight pitch.  sometimes I'll start with a reliever and that kind of throws them off.  The team I struggle most against is SF and little crap teams that pull off a good game.  I beat a guy that had detroit by the ten-run, but then he played with HO and beat the shit outta me.  can't explain it other than BO must have some sort of inconsistent quality about them as far as their pitchers getting rocked that isn't all due to a good offensive opponent.

Guess I missed the big comeback, but didn't you choose the Mets as your first team in round 1?  Did you change strategies in the later rounds?
