Something dawned on me as I was reading gantry's tips on the San Fran lineup and here it is:
I often will not pinch hit for a catcher for defensive purposes. I want to limit stolen bases, and as a result, will keep an Alan Ashby in the game. I also am not a big fan of putting let's say Tony Armas in for Marty Barrett, knowing that Armas can't field that well and will be more error prone.
So the underlying question is......do you believe that different players are better or worse in the field than others?? Or do all RBI players play defense the same??
I for one, whether it is more mental than physical, like to have a coherent lineup with solid defense in place (this includes Robby Thompson at 2nd base Gantry) so I can play solid D and get the W that I so desire.
They all play the same
I actually used to do this, too, back in elementary school. However, it's been confirmed in the actual game code that there are no positions. Errors are completely random (although dependent on which team you are), and there's no change if you use subs.
RBI 3 has positions, but I've never noticed any ill effects from fielding an unbalanced team.
We've learned quite a bit about fielding since your last run on the forums Blyleven. Check out my FAQ entries on fielding, start here and read down:

I do admire you adhering to only making positional switches.
I have noticed that Ozzie Smith makes a surprising amount of errors for somebody who should be quite good in the field, how can that phenomenon be explained????
It's all in your head my friend, trust me... I never noticed Ozzie being error prone myself. Some of the things you'll learn about RBI will challenge your grasp of truth and reality, but we all go through it. Took me a LONG time to accept that fast throws do not increase your chance of making an error in the field. But eventually I acquiesced and am all better now...
Oz just about cost me a game online against Scroope the other day with a 2-out error to put the tying run on in the bottom of the 9th. Fortunately, I managed to force a popout to end it.

He sees a lot more balls to be fielded than most of his defensive teammates...that is all.
