My last did you know posting inspired this new topic. Biggest heartbreak in sports! Ouch! However I know we all have experienced some monumental breakdowns from our home teams. What is you biggest home team meltdown!
2002 Giants choke in game six
1999 Vikings Gary anderson misses a field goal against atlanta in the nfc championship game.
1951 Bobby Thomponson shot heard round the world
1985 Brett became the third future Hall of Famer to collect four hits in a Game Seven, joining Max Carey (1925) and Willie Stargell (1979). In vanquishing the Cardinals, Brett was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base as the Royals won Game Seven, 11-0.
1993 Joe Carters game winning HR off the wild thing to win series
'96 series, game 4, Leyritz homer
Frank Reich destroying the hearts of the oilers (i love this call)
1985 Miami upsets the bears on monday night
1992 Christian Latner jump shot to beat kentucky (greatest shot ever?)
1978"Miracle in the Meadowlands
1999 Titans lose the super bowl by one yard
1991 giants beat the bills on norwood's missed field goal
I'm going with Joe Carter 1993. I honestly can't watch that homerun. I have a video of the Phils 1993 season. It's great--it doesn't even mention the World Series.
that is awesome that they left out the world series...lol fucking great!!!
For me it's the '96 series, game 4, Leyritz homer . . .
Everytime I accidentally see that lowlight I have to scream "For the love of God, Wohlers, THROW THE FASTBALL!!! Slider!?! AAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!"
In the series, Atlanta held New York to a .217 BA and had a 2.33 ERA compared to the Yankees' 3.93. The Yanks only hit two homers in the series. However, after that Leyritz homer, the Braves scored 2 runs in the next and final 21 innings.
Oohhh yeah, I'm still bitter about that one. Now the Braves have floundered in the post season ever since.
Millwood for Estrada? . . . AAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!
Yeah, enjoy Estrada. Hope your AAA team needs a light hitting catcher with an average arm.
I think Joe Carter's shot over the left field wall would've been better if it wasn't for the jersey he was wearing. i mean, who in their right mind was actually rooting for canada in that game, eh? That was the final straw in Mitch's miserable comedic career. Remember when Mitch played for the Cubs and had a goofy blue glove?!
So many to choose from: Frank Reich destroying the hearts of the oilers.
A couple from the Chicago perspective:
#1 - The Bears losing on Monday night to the Dolphins in 1985, ruining their unbeaten season. We still fume about this game...
#2 - The horrendous breaking up of the Bulls. We had one of the greatest basketball teams of any era, and it all went to shit. Not only did it go to shit, but our "rebuilding" phase has gone on WAY too long. The Bulls lost a lot of fans like me in the process, as I hardly follow basketball anymore because they are no fun to watch...
#3 - A couple of doozy Cub trades - Lee Smith for Al Nipper & Calvin Schiraldi and Lou Brock for Ernie Brologlio or whateve his name way. Sucka will help me out on that one...
I did forget about Christian Laettner putting the knife if the hearts of all Kentucky fans in 1992. Might have been the most incredible end to a basketball game I've ever seen. Nobody would've believed he could've made the shot with so little time left.
I have so many. I didn't see it, but the 1978"Miracle in the Meadowlands" is such an amazing end. The Giants had a lead against the Eagles with 20 seconds let. QB Joe Pisarcik fumbled the handoff (he could've just taken a knee). Herm Edwards picked it up, ran 30 yards. Eagles Win!
Fuck you Giants!
What about the Titans coming up a yard short of the end zone for the win in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago?
I think that the biggest sports heartbreak was the way that Bud Selig took the most entertaining All-Star game in recent memory and flushed it down the toilet!!!
Who the heck wants to see the best players in the game walk off the field in an extra inning tie?
norwood wide left... my sonics losing to the fucking nuggets in 96. i still have no idea how that happened.
the afore mentioned gary anderson choke job against the dirtybirds in 98. great time for your one missed field goal.
I have one, how about when John Paxson made the 3 pointer in 93 to win the championship? what about the bill buckner play or the kirk gibson/carlton fisk game winning homeruns?
Well, I think the buckner was also a very heartbreaking moment. However, I disagree on the Gibson and Fisk vote. Those were glory moments that were satisfying to see. It hurt to see Mitch get rocked because he was such a goofball that you felt sorry for him. Bulls were unbelievabull. what about every year that the Lakers have won with Shaq. Those are all terrible moments.
great miracle in the meadowlands call!!!
yeah shaq sucks, he missed 10 or so games because of a stupid toe. i understand its his big toe, but still. you think that a 320 whatever pound, 7'2 monster would be able to live with pain in his toe...
how is shaq's toe a sports heartbreak?
i never said his toe was, i was just saying that hes a big loser and he sucks big time and the lakers will be last place this year
shaq sucks big time??? You lost me on that one
forget it man, just forget it
Shaq definitely sucks. He fouls and cheats and bumps the crap outta people with his big ass. If I played pool with people and hit them in the head with my pool cue while they were trying to shoot and I ended up winning, would you say that I'm a good pool player? how was your new years'? Anyone play RBI that night?
If you won an MVP award from the National Pool Association (NPA) I'd think you were at least pretty good.
Maybe I don't know anything, but if Shaq sucks, how come he's the best center in the NBA. I can't stand the guy, but I don't think he sucks.
I concur VP. I'm not sure how this thread turned to shaq but clearly if you think shaq is a cheater or is a bad player....your not very knowledgeable about the NBA. Its ssuch an absurd notion that its wasteful to debate it.
alright, I suppose I can admit that Shaq is a decent ball player. He doesn't commit many turnovers, and that makes up for his piss poor 3-pointers. However, there is no other player in the NBA that I like to dislike more than him. Every year that he wins the championship is a sports heartbreak for me. Sorry for the detailed tangent though guys.
i dunno, i still think there are better centers (nowitzki, duncan, maybe even elton brand) shaq does make the basket, but never without pushing someone around. i will give him credit for getting the team to the finals so many times and getting like 30 points a game, but not many people like him and if hes not 3 feet from the hoop, he wont make it
