1986 Fleer - Navy border with team colored bubble for info on bottom
1986 Topps - Black top border with team color name on top
1987 Fleer - light blue border fading to white at bottom
1987 Topps - Woodgrain border
1988 Fleer - white border with blue and red horizontal stripes
1988 Topps - white border with team color inset border and team name in team color inset inside picture
i was always torn between '87 Topps and '86 Topps. i voted for '87 Topps though.
What a brilliant question, I can't believe how endless the RBI banter can be!
I will go with 86 Topps, it just has that "classic" quality to it that I associate with RBI Baseball.....well done Ted!
I picked '87 Topps as well. Still have my whole set somewhere...
Gotta be the '87 Topps - I always loved those cards, and I don't have many of them since I didn't start collecting until a couple years later (I have lots of '88 Topps, because the gas station where I bought my cards had a ridiculous backlog of them).
The '86 cards are pre-RBI ('85 stats). I disapprove of their inclusion.
the problem with the 87 Topps is that wood panel exterior, it just does not resonate with the classic qualities of RBI in my view
All wood grain, all day.
To me, this is the baseball card of my youth. I still have the entire set. I was eight at the time. Damn, that's a long time ago.
I always loved the little gold cup they put next to stud rookies. Gregg Jefferies was one of the guys, I think.

Correct, and All-Stars are from '87 which means it should be some set of 88 cards. I'd have to see them to remember which is best, 88 Donruss isn't even on the list (what was the first year of Score cards?)
I was thinking Score started in '89 or '90, but I vaguely recall finding an '88 one in one of those $6 packs of opened cards like you find at Wal-Mart.
87 Topps no doubt.
The highest print run in the history of Baseball Cards.
I remember them bitches being every where. You can still get packs for under a buck.
1988 - I am positive this was Score's first year.

lol, I'll always remember the Todd Worrell card like that.
Whats funny about those sets on the Poll is that they are worth less now than when they came out.

I stopped collecting in like 1991, have many cards from 83-91 now worth very little
sorry there was only eight spots to choose from, hence no score or bowman or leaf or 88 donruss or whatever. i was thinking everyone would pick topps anway, and i'm right so far.
this is a tough topic for me to discuss because i stopped collecting cards after the 87 series came out.
i always though fleer sucked by the way, except for the sweet borders of the 83 set, all white border with a blue stripe along the bottom, very clean.
my most memorable year was 1987. mainly because it was the first time i considered myself a "serious collector." 7 years old at the time.
i believe my interest in those cards is what sparked my interest in RBI. the more i collected, the more i learned the stats, and the more i wanted to play the nintendo game those guys were in.
i think i stopped collecting contemporary cards somewhere around 1996-98, and i always went back to that 1987 Topps series. In my 20s, having some money, those cards seem a lot cheaper now, so I've picked up some boxes over the years... i also began collecting older cards, like 1940s and 1950s.
ah, those were the days.

This spring I bought a box of series2 2001 Topps to finish my set. One of the packs I opened had a 1959 Mantle HR leader in it, $150 card. Part of an insert program for Topps 50th birthday.
Baseball cards may be part of the reason I like RBI 3 - most of my collecting was done in 1991, and RBI 3 has 1990 stats. I knew those stats and players extremely well.
88 Topps. Most worthless set ever. I have a lot of them.
GDavis, that card is hilarious, although Al Pedrique looks white in that card, I always thought he was a latino??

Awesome...this was my first complete set. I too was a fan of the All-Star Rookies
Definitely 87 Topps in my book. I can't include 1986 because it wasn't an RBI stat year, Topps was king (though the least valuable), the 1987 cards are more well known than lackluster 1988 set and the 1986 stats (1987 cards) was my "preferred" year of RBI with Cali/Bo followed by the Bo/Mets world series..
Phew!
I'm gonna have to go with the '87 Topps set as well. Sure, the design was cheesy and kinda nasty by today's standards, but you can say the same thing about RBI Baseball.

You're absolutely right, I would never call RBI cheesy. I always spell it cheezy...
Weird, my post disappeared.
I think 87 was a huge year for card collecting. My first complete set. Remember when Kids were into baseball? MLB should have more day games so kids get interested.

I wish. I could definitely use a drink. My wife's grandmother in the Philippines passed away yesterday and my wife and daughter are leaving tomorrow morning to get out there for the funeral.
I'm totally psyched that they are going, I just wish I could go along. I've had vacation scheduled for next week for the last few months and so did my wife.
Looks like I'll be home alone on vacation and won't be with my wife and daughter for Thanksgiving.
My prediction: lots of crying in my beer.
:'(
Tough times buddy...
But the dee-nee support group will be there to help you out. And I'll get you those CDs early to give you something to do...
I'm going with the 87 Topps as well.
That set is a "tribute" to the 1962 Topps set --- the wood grain border is the same on both cards.
I wanted to with 86 Topps since that was the first set I ever owned (thank you grandma!).
Do ya'll remember when cards came 15 to a pack and cost less than 50 cents? Also, you had your choice of Topps, Fleer and Donruss. . . .and you were a lucky bastard if you found the Fleer and Donruss.
I feel bad for my son. If he wants baseball cards, he'll have to choose from 900000 variations. They are 4.00 a pack and contain 3 cards. . . . .and no tooth breaking gum.
When I collected cards, it was 50 cents a pack for Donruss, Fleer, and Topps, 60 cents for Score, and $1 for Upper Deck. Upper Deck was the Cadillac of baseball cards.
fknmclane, sorry about your situation. I'll be thinking about you on Thanksgiving. If you can make it to St. Paul, you're welcome to join me at my aunt's house.
Thanks, Beef. I'll be on the next flight. ;)
My parents and everyone is still here, but I'm missing my girls. This really sucks.

I buy my kid Topps Total. $.99/pack 12 cards, 1 insert every pack. Topps started making this set in 2001 because of complaints about prices/#of cards etc. They make sets for all 4 sports. The sets are huge however(990cards) but they include all 40 man rosters and key minor leaguers from each system. This is as cheap as it gets nowadays. Good stuff.

This is the official RBI trading Card
I feel like a kid when I play the game.
I chose other:
Sportsflicks (sp?)
I'm going to go to some old shops and buy shit loads of 88 topps packs (they can't be more than a quarter a piece) and give my kid the gum.
Why did Topps sets always have 792 cards? Fleer had 660. Why?
QuoteI chose other:
Sportsflicks (sp?)
Dammit. I go through 3 pages and I thought i would be the first to bust out with the Sportflics. Underrated as hell. 3 cards for 59 cents was way ahead of its time when everything else was like 15 for 50 cents.
Fucking great thread/poll. I had to go with 87 Topps. Probably one of the first things I think of when i think about my childhood. I collected from 83-91 but got the most hardcore in 87 when I was in probably 3rd grade. I have probably 3 of every card produced from 87-91. Damn those were the good ol days.
87 Topps, without a doubt, has the most RBI'ers with their correct team according the game. However, 86 and 88 Topps are also crucial in picking up guys like Bob Grich (86 Topps was his last card) or having the likes of Al Pedrique represented (88 Topps). I think that 87 Topps is the staple (Meat and Potatoes if you will!!!)
I'm going to submit this as the mesh version of the official RBI baseball card
This wouldn't be bad for an 86 though.
I never realized how much Nolan Ryan and Dickie Thon looked alike!
I vote for O-Pee-Chee Premier. Actually, IU voted 87 Topps, has the RBI'ers and whatnot.

I like the cards. Man I had forgotten what the '86 Topps border was, those were nice.
props to ERICDAVISFAN for making those 86 and 87 topps cards, those are fucking hysterical!!!
wumpstenataly bumpsted
Most likely, I don't think any set will have all the players in their proper context. If you wanted to stay correct by year, then you would do 87 Topps for Bo/Ca/Ho/NY and 88 Topps for Dt/Mn/SF/St/AL/NL as that is how the years lined up stat-wise...
Great thread, makes me consider taking my old baseball card sets out of upstairs...
Hands down the woodgrain 87 Topps, the first set I ever bought. I even have a signed Bob Melvin card when he was with the Giants. Beckett Magazine ws pretty classic as well. Memories...
I have the set put together. just gotta get it in sheets.
If memory serves there are only a couple guys that didn't have an 87 topps card --- yes, the "traded" set has to be used to get guys on the correct team(s).
Pedrique is one of the guys that doesn't have an 87 topps card. . . . . Lombardozzi and / or Davidson of the twins are the others.

yeah, what he said ;)
I'm putting 88 Topps in their place. That is, of course, if Mark Davidson has an 88 topps card.

I'm doing the same thing Ryno; thanks for the motivation.
1987 Topps Baseball Cards and RBI Baseball have equal nestalgia as far as I'm concerned. It's been heavily documented, and it's an old issue.
I think it's possible to either find a set with each player in it (even though the nostalgic connection to the video game might be somewhat lost) or create cards for the other 5 - I'm counting Robinson, Reuschel, and Alexander too.
***
I've been working on the Mark Davidson version, and I plan to make a back side as well. (I know the dimensions are off on this one).
I think if we/I make a card for at least the 2 missing players, it would at least look better than an empty slot. (I also used the managers and team checklists to make the team total an even 18 for the pages).
I'll keep looking for the perfect set, keeping in mind that its nostalgic value will be at least flawed.
Very nice. If you don't mind, please make a Pedrique and the set will be complete!
The 87 Topps traded set is cheap. I bought a set on ebay for 4 bucks.
I'm using the "Team Leaders" cards to fill out one of the pages. The other page I will be inserting a fleer "team logo" sticker.
Sportflics Vincent Coleman. Looks like Willie McGeezer in the background. Cool because he follows the ball off colemans bat in the second pic.
