Both got inducted today for the hall of fame!!!!! Each player needs 75 percent to get inducted...here are the other RBI'ers who came close. Tough Luck Gantry with Sandberg (although we had a good debate about it on a previous post)....we will definitly get in on his second try. An amazing list of RBI players who were on the ballot. I counted 13, 12 of which didn't make it.
Eddie Murray 423 85.3%
Gary Carter 387 78.0%
Jim Rice 259 52.2%
A. Dawson 248 50.0%
Ryne Sandberg 248 49.2%
Rich Gossage 209 42.1%
Bert Blyleven 145 29.2%
Jack Morris 113 22.8%
Alan Trammell 70 14.1%
Don Mattingly 68 13.7%
Dale Murphy 58 11.7%
F. Valenzuela 31 6.3%
Keith Hernandez 30 6.0%
Vince Coleman 3 0.6%
How can Donny Baseball NOT make it? If he had played on 1 or 2 of the World Champion teams, he'd have been a lock! If the idiots hadn't gone on strike in '94 he might have won his ring!
Mattingly had a few great years, but didn't really put up the stats over a long career. I was surprised that he was so low last year, then I looked him up on baseballreference.com...
I officially don't get this first ballot thing. Sandberg is the best second baseman of his era, everyone knows he's getting into the Hall, yet he gets less than half the votes?
Congrats to Gary Carter! I'll update the page tomorrow...
I think that there is some extra prestige with being a 1st ballot hall of famer. Luis Aparicio and Pee Wee Reese were great in their generations, but didn't make it in until 1984. I think Sandberg will just have to wait until the competition is too weak and his stats stand out more.
Unfortunately, with the way baseball has gone over the past few years with inflated stats, Ryno's (and the other candidate's) numbers will stand out less and less as more people who have played recently get put on the ballot.
Does anyone know who will be on the ballot next year for the first time?
I just found a good article by Jayson Stark along those lines:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stark_jayson/1488642.html (http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stark_jayson/1488642.html)
That's a good article. I was shocked that Andre Dawson didn't make the Hall!!! He was as good in every aspect as Gary Carter. He could hit, run, throw...he was the whole package (and I HATED the guy, because I hate the Cubs!!!) Despite that hate, there is no doubt in my mind that the Hawk and Sandberg should be inducted, probably ahead of Carter
I just want to know who those 3 guys are who voted for coleman, SL natives, or just guys who vote for everyone on the ballot?
i dont get it, how come Dawson and Sandburg got the same number of votes, but a different percentage? shouldnt they be the same or is it something different?
great question....i have no idea
