Title: Get rid of Guest posting
Post by: fightonusc on 11/30/04, 01:08:46 PM
I hate to broach the subject, because a) it's not really my place and b) I don't want to turn away new people. But, from the Barry Dingle incident to whatever the hell is happening now, I don't see where the benefits of letting people post as Guests outweigh the headaches that it brings. If people want to read posts before they register, that's fine...but this tomfoolery has got to stop.

(Also, I like the phrase tomfoolery. Not quite as nice as shenanigans, but a little bit more underground...)

tomfoolery is not a phrase...it's a word.  But I agree with everything else fighton said.

Good point, Emilio...I suppose something like "wacky hiijinx" was more what I was looking for...

Some days when I think my life just isn't exciting enough, I stop and look back on the brief time I spent with Mr. Dingle, oh how I wish I gave him my address.

Hey Farva, what's that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the
walls and the mozzarella sticks?

EDIT:  Having just read some of the guest posts, I think they need to go.

Guest posts do not really bother me. Especially when I rip on myself. I think guest posters just like to get in and out. Nothing serious. I have thick enough skin to not be emotionally affected by a guest post. That is just me, and I think the anything goes forum should be the only forum to allow guest posts. I started as a guest, and I was inspired to become a member. I hate other forums where you cannot go in and give it a test drive before you have to become a member.

Not quite sure what to do yet.  Dark Side is right, many people start out with a couple guest posts and get hooked that way.  Haven't had enough time to deliberate, but the posting level for guests is typically positive.  I'll figure it out shortly...

Also if anyone really wants to be a dick, they'll create an account, didn't Barry Dingle actually create an account?  I'm not sure it really solves that much.

David Gest gets beat up by old ladies, much like the new guest posters need to have done to them.
Title: Re:Get rid of Guest posting
Post by: Darky on 12/02/04, 03:11:03 AM
I am in favor for keeping guest posts. It is an effective approach to luring new members.
I suggest that if a guest poster decides to be an asshole, simply ignore his posts. He will feel left out by not being acknowledged, uninspired to make more posts, and will leave in peace.
Seriously, if a guest poster comes in and makes his presence known as an asshole, it is only for a couple of days and maybe 10 annoying posts at the most. Dee-Neers, show some mental toughness by just taking the asshole guest posters as a joke. The more you reply to an asshole poster, the more he is going to post negative shit. It is that simple.
That is how The Dark Side lightened up. I realized that I was an asshole in the beginning, but it was just for shits and giggles. But it got a little personal at times. So I backed off, because I love Dee-Nee and RBI. It also gets pretty lonely here in Sweden. Swedish guys are boring to hang with.

Also, Gantry...why not announce who's IP address is posing as the guest account?  Why protect them when they are doing it just to be an a-hole?
Title: Re:Get rid of Guest posting
Post by: Gantry on 12/02/04, 04:19:20 PM
I typically like to discuss the matter with people beforehand to see if they let up.  Like in this case it was the same IP as aldrete bastard but it wasn't actually him.  Ditto with the chubbs/dingle incident.  I'd prefer to get the other person's story first before the dee-nee faithful gang up on him...

Guest posting is too valuable to get rid of.  If the same guests won't stop then I'll have to ban the IP address.  All these guest posts are coming from the same place...
Title: Re:Get rid of Guest posting
Post by: fightonusc on 12/02/04, 04:27:19 PM
OK, the explaination from Gantry is good enough for me. Somehow, I was thinking that it would be easier to limit people from posting if they had to sign up first, but I guess you could just ban the IP address.

I'm more than happy to lead a contingent of Dee-Nee's "finest" up to Aldrete Bastard's dorm and politely explain to these guest posters that they are no longer welcome on the site. It seems like he's in Canada, so we'll have to make sure we are careful not to get thrown into a rough and tumble Canadian jail, but I'm game...anyone else with me?

(And by lead, I mean get everyone else riled up to do it, and then back out at the last minuet while everyone else does the dirty work.)

If I could be a superhero
I'd be Immigration dude
I'd send all the foreigners back to their homes
For eating up all of our food
And taking our welfare and best jobs to boot
Like landscaping, dishwashing, picking our fruit
I'd pass a lot of laws to get rid of their brood
'Cause I'd be Immigration Dude

Title: Re:Get rid of Guest posting

Here's why, with definition:

2a. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: "Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated" (Richard Kain).

While attempting to point out how guest posting is getting dumbed down, you actually made a grammatical mistake.  The phrase would have been better if stated as such: "more stupid".

Therefore, the irony exists in the fact that I would have expected a post attacking the intelligence of "guests" to have been grammatically correct.  That is the incongruity in this instance.  Better?

Miked, you're basing this on the fact that stupider is not in the dictionary. I have no clue. Will not get involved anymore. For I is the smarter men alive tooday.

Ah. Good explanation. Sorry, ever since Alanis' butchering of the word I become very edgy at the use of "ironic."

That said, "stupider" is a commonly accepted term. While English professors might frown upon it, it is not incorrect.

For some reason, I missed this before.  Shitpaw left the boards because of this?  Wasn't this thread about the Canadian kids who were posting shit on the RBI board, not the stuff shitpaw was talking about?  Did he leave the board out of a misunderstanding?

Of course I won't go back and read the original posts, but someone help me out here.  We may have to start a "come back shitpaw" drive...
