Title: STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: poolstroke72 on 12/15/04, 11:31:24 AM
WHY DON"T WE GET A STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE 1 TIME ONLY AND SEE WHO THE BEST IS. NOT REALLY THAT HARD TO DO.

The fact of the matter is that there really aren't many straight pitch players here, at least none that play your "Down the middle style".  I think that may be part of the reason you have trouble finding people to play.

Post by: Gantry on 12/15/04, 11:50:31 AM
I'd probably be down for a straight pitch league, though would much prefer moving on the mound and no 2-strike slowballs.  But lets get enough people to make a league and then we can figure it out...

And please lay off the caps poolstroke, thank you...

No 2 strike slow balls are you serious ,have to have a little strategy in the game. No moving is the way to play.

QuoteNo 2 strike slow balls are you serious ,have to have a little strategy in the game. No moving is the way to play.

You can interchange "no moving on the mound" and "no 2 strike slow balls" and have the same exact debate.  Moving on the mound allows for pitching strategy.  Regardless, I'm open to any of the options as long as the people in the league vote on it...

Thanks!

I do not support straight pitch, but I guess I will play.  I won't dominate like I do everytime I play Noah (heh heh), but I'll play for the greater good of the best (video game).

I am a legend in my own mind.  :(

How did I stumble into the Noah and JoeD show?

Back to the purpose of the thread....I'm in.  And I agree with Gantry on the moving on the mound and no 2 strike slow ball rules.

If we're taking an unofficial vote on what style of straight ball to play, I respectfully abstain from voting, since I really have no straight ball experience.

Yes absolutely no sinkers , that's for curve ballers. You have to be able to throw slow pitches and fastballs to make it a little challenge for all of us. Moving on the mound does not make any sense, that also fits in the category of curve ballers. Hope to see this league take off.

I never understood why you guys refer to "up + A" as a slow ball or a sinker (I know I've heard other names, too)...isn't that a knuckle?  No pitch moves the way that pitch does--except the knuckle.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: BeefMaster on 12/16/04, 11:22:38 AM
According to the manual, it's a sinkerball if it drops and a knuckleball if it doesn't.  It also says that the knuckleball will wobble more... does anyone know whether the presence of wobble is a tipoff to whether the ball will drop?  I can't say that I've noticed, but it would be a valuable discovery.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: JoeDirt on 12/16/04, 11:26:39 AM
Yeah, I knew the manual says that.  I guess that does explain why Mike Scott has such a killer knuckleball.

I must say, though, I know of no difference in wobble between the knuckle and sinker.

...also, a sinker doesn't move like that AND a knuckle does drop, if thrown correctly.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: Gantry on 12/16/04, 11:32:23 AM
I can't speak for everyone but I think of up+A as a slowball because the ball goes slower (smiley)

Do others refer to a normal "A" pitch as a slowball?  So much nomenclature, so little time...
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: BeefMaster on 12/16/04, 11:57:18 AM
I call the up-A pitch a slowball; that way, it covers both knuckle and sinker.  I also think I've heard it called a forkball, although this might be from another game (either the sequels or Baseball Simulator 1.000).
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: fknmclane on 12/16/04, 03:01:02 PM
There's a pitch...pressing nothing but A.

There's a fastball...pressing down and A.

Then there's a changeup/knuckler/sinker/forkball/splooge or whatever...pressing up and A.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: poolstroke72 on 12/18/04, 10:15:51 AM
   A change-up is just the  "A" button.
A fastball is the "A" button and down.
Those are the only 2 pitches you can throw in straight pitch. Only my opinion though. "A" plus the up button is not allowed, whether it's called a knuckler or sinker.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: Darky on 12/18/04, 01:30:05 PM
pressing A is like a two seam fastball but no movement.
down and A is a four seam fastball.
up and A is a change up with  dropping movement or no dropping movement. Mike Scott always has the dropping movement.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: poolstroke72 on 12/18/04, 07:30:46 PM
Let me clarify this once and for all, the "A" and down is a fastball, and just the "A" button is a off speed pitch.
Title: Re:STRAIGHT PITCH LEAGUE
Post by: nightwulf on 12/18/04, 08:17:05 PM
As far as the game is concerned, pitches with just "A" are curveballs. Whether you actually curve the ball or not is irrelevant.

I'm not gonna get involved here, but I just wanna say that I'm tired of people crying about lag when they lose.  If there is a lag and it's affecting your game, say something and do not play (NOT after I score 5 runs on you, though).  And if it's still good enough for you to play--THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THE LAG!  :)

poolstroke - homophobic attacks and calling people "fag" is absolutely not allowed here.   This is your first and only warning in this regard...

This again was probably one that ShitPaw viewed over and over in order to knock Darkside's post out of the top ten.  Darkside had artificially bumped the views on his own post, so there were some weird posts in the top 10 viewed.

I can see your point in regard to online for sure.  I can also see your point of you're drinkin' a few brews while playing in person.  The only time I cannot see your point is if you're playing competitive ball in person--especially with a little action on the line.  Riley and I play this way all the time; and while "serious," it's still a shitload of fun.

hi everyone - i'm fairly new to this forum, but i love what i've seen so far.

i have to ask a question:  why are people so interested in straight pitch RBI games??  i just don't see what fun that would be.  i'm not trying to be a wise-ass here.  it just seems to take a lot of the skill out of the game.  i think in order to be a well-rounded ribby player, shouldn't you be good at ALL facets of the game??
and why stop there.  how about no stealing bases too??
i mean what if people played texas hold 'em but weren't allowed to bluff??

please don't misinterpret this as me being a wiseguy.  it's just that my friends and i take the pitching thing really seriously.  there;s nothing better than starting john tudor and being able to throw the wicked back-door curve for a strikeout of jim ed rice.
anyway, just my two cents.  and thank you to whomever started this forum...it's friggin' sweet.

Different folks, different strokes.  I think you'll find that straight pitch players are the minority though.  I for one play anything-goes style almost exclusively.

I know Gantry (the administrator of this site) and his friends play straight-pitch in order to maximize enjoyment of the drinking game -- indeed, when playing the drinking game is the only time I'll play straight pitch.  It does have it's advantage there:  1: getting you smashed faster and 2: not striking out 27 times after you get too drunk to judge quick enough on what's going to be a ball and what's going to be a strike.

Welcome to the boards, by the way.
