First I'd like to say that this website is one of my very favorite since I thought I was the only one who liked NES R.B.I. passionately. In response to the assertion that Sheridan is a "legend", I'd like to know why Madlock is not mentioned as well. I always sub him into my 5 spot and he does wonders. He's a 30 homerun player stuck in the body of a 14 homerun player......my favorite underrated player hands down.
this argument can be started and finished with one word...."Sullivan"
Welcome Dawg and thanks for the post... We at the Dee-Nee house don't have the same love for Madlock as most do. In fact, none of us typically start Mad-Dog...
We are more of a minority on this, but we all would take Sheridan in the 5 spot due to our lefty bias. But he is a gamer and many agree with you...
Ah, Sky Dog. I was once where you are. I too thought Mad Dog was a great pinch hitter. When he does hit them out, he crushes them. I used to save PS for late-game heroics.
I believe Mad Dog is best used for a slumping Lemon or bases loaded sistuation with the pitcher up to bat.
Give Sheridan a try--you'll be pleased.
try heath on one or two at bats, he isnt that bad, either.
Heath is very solid for a pinch-hit dinger, but he isn't quite the same when playing a full game. Then again, I can't remember the last time I played Heath Bar for an entire game....
I like to put Madlock in for Herndon against lefties and Sheridan against righties. I find that gives me the best of both worlds most times. Both are solid pinch hitters and capable of playing and producing for the entire game too.
Overall, you can't go wrong with any pintch hitters on Detroit. The only possible exception to this might be Bergman because he's slow and his contact rating is fairly low. Sheridan, Heath, and Madlock can all step it up when you need them to.
I think most people favor Madlock because he has the highest batting average, the most homers, ties for contact, and ranks second in speed when comparing him to the other DT pinch hitters.
Madlock, Heath, Sheridan, and Bergman is my order (give or take the current scenario, of course).

hey skydog, i would have to agree with you... madlock is clutch. what you need to know is that this forum is comprised of a lefty bias... most righthanders get overlooked.
That is a very good point, there is a huge lefty bias here...
No matter who you put in on Detroit, the team is still pretty good. If were talking about quality of bench, California is the best. They are an average team 1-8. With the subs in, they are a force to be reconed with.
I agree with vgp on the California take. I think they have the best pinch hitters (Ruppert Jones being the best) However, I rarely use any of their subs as pinch hitters...I sub them in during the 1st/2nd inning and play them as starters. Does that take away pinch hitter status? If not, I'd have to say that Ruppert Jones is better than Madlock.
california has good pinch hitters but boston has the best. burks, armas, and henderson are the best pinch hitters in the non allstar league
