whats the scoop with the sequels to this game? i never played RBI 2 on the nes, but heard it had all the teams and measured yer homers and did it even have home run contest too?
did it suck or something, it never gets mentioned here.
RBI2 sucks. Extremely low scoring games- very difficult to score. I think they have switch hitters, double switches, diving, likenesses of real ballparks, and more teams. No home run hitting contests that I can remember. After reading this, you may think it sounds like a good game but it's not. Too tough to hit. All games end up 1-0, 2-1 etc.
RBi 2 and 3 do not exist.
Joe, I am very surprised at your review of RBI2.
I played over the XMas break, and found myself laughing uncontrollably. It has many of the same aspects of RBI 1, but it is graphics that are supposed to be better but they just look terrible. Also, the jumping/diving is terrible, but really funny.
On the whole, I found it enjoyable to mess around with, but obviously it could never be played seroiously. They include some aspects of the old game, i.e., the old scoreboard, the old longshot of Tengen Field as you select starting pitchers.
Good for a lugh if nothing else.
I always liked RBI 3 - I prefer small-ball to lots of homers, and the power ratings were cranked down somewhat in RBI 2 and 3. I also liked having lots of teams and bigger rosters, and I thought the jumping and diving worked pretty well. I'm about the only person on the forums who feels this way, though. I started playing the sequels as soon as they came out back in '90-'91, so I got used to them pretty quickly. Also, Sandberg is awesome, especially in RBI 3, which made the game even cooler for me.
RBI 2 & 3 don't have double-switches - if you take out the pitcher, you have to put the new guy in the old pitcher's spot. They have full 24-man rosters, though, and you can modify the starting lineup before the game. They also have switch hitters, DHs, and a super team that you play if you finish a "season". It's a different game... you should at least give it a try before letting everyone decide for you that you hate it.
You'll still probably hate it, though.
I also happen to like 2 and 3 just fine. It adds a few touches that I wished the original had, but keeps the great pitcher-batter interface. The new player models add nothing, so I wished they'd stayed with the chubby boys. I play 2 and 3 almost as much as the original.
thanks guys, i know a game seller in ames, so im sure i can get rbi 2 for 5 bucks mailed to me, and rbi 3 as well, but was that on the nes or super nes.....doesnt matter cause i also mhave a super nes
Actually, it matters a ton. The RBI series on every other system is completely different, and all are truly poor games (I have them all for the NES, Genesis, 32X, SNES). Tengen went for realism and changed the game for the newer systems, and came up with mostly unplayable games. You MUST play the RBI series on the NES as they are the only ones based on the original game.
if they had kept the fat guys and the Astroturf 2 and 3 would have been great.
Would be cool if the games were combined. . . . depth of rbi 3 with the simplicity of the original.
I love RBI3. Very fun to me. The 2-1 games are great.
I'm a fan of Super Batter Up for the SNES as well.
Anybody know where you could get more info on RBI 2 & 3? Just ordered them from Ebay, and I'm trying to remember what they were like. Never played 3, but 2 was alright. Gotta like the selection of teams ( 8 teams get old after a while), although for pure fun and drunken excitement, you can't touch the original.
There'sa few people around here that like the game. I can't say I've ever played.
ps, b_eazy, if you really want to make an impression around here, you should post about hookers and drugs or killing hookers with drugs. Free advice.
Ok.....thanks, but I prefer killing hookers while on drugs. But thats neither here nor there. Just lookin for info on RBI 2 and/or 3.
RBI 2 and 3 were ok. I liked the expanded rosters. You could go back to 1st after already rounding 2nd, instead of being stuck with a double play. The diving/jumping looks silly, but adds a little complexity to the defense. The best part of the game is that everyone runs like Lamar from Revenge of the Nerds. High comedy there.
RBI = perfection
RBI 2 = ok
RBI 3 = better than 2, because of the division winning teams you could use
My advise, if you're looking for something to top RBI, stop. It's not going to happen. Don't play, because you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for something that is fun and a little different pace than RBI, but still holds some of the admirable qualities, then go for it.
I read on here someone mention season play on RBI 2 & 3. What type of season is it? Does it actually keep your stats? How many games do you play?
I have a feeling that RBI3 will be played a lot more than RBI2 at your place. The big changes were between 1 & 2, with 3 being an evolutionary improvement of 2...
Not sure about the season modes, sorry...
And welcome to the forums!
Cool deal. Thanks for the insight. Oh, you can assure The original RBI will be played more than 2/3 combined. Just wanted to purchase them to add to my collection. My pleasure to join the forum. Great website you got. Just happened to stumble upon it searching for RBI games to buy. Didn't realize there was this many avid RBIers still around. I've been down since day one. Keep up the good work.
Never hurts to add them to the collection, I have copies myself. I play about one game a year though...
Thanks for the kind words, keep on posting....
The "season" mode on RBI 2 and 3 is pretty much the same as in the original - if you select an opponent in the same league as your team, you play every team in the league. If you go undefeated, you get a password to play the Tengen Team, which is fairly tough to beat, even with the incompetent computer opponent. No stats are kept, and the season is either 14 or 12 games, depending on whether you're an AL or NL team.
If you select an opponent in the opposite league, or if you or the opponent is one of the historical division winners (in RBI 3 - it has the '83-'89 division winners in addition to all the '90 teams), you will play a 7-game series, with home field changing after games 2 and 5 (like in the World Series).
Gantry's right - RBI 3 is better than RBI 2. The music was improved (RBI 2's was just weird; RBI 3's is at least mediocre), batters were allowed to move a little closer to the plate, and there are twice as many teams thanks to the division winners being added.
If you're experienced at RBI, one thing you will want to do is change the difficulty before you start - RBI 3 (I think RBI 2, also, but I'm not sure; I usually play 3) has Hard and Easy difficulty settings, and it defaults to Easy. Hard is still pretty crappy, but the fielders have somewhat better reactions, so it should keep horrific blowouts to a minimum.
There was a thread awhile ago in which nightwulf, our resident technical guru, managed to extract the actual player ratings for the teams in RBI 3. I'll try to dig up that thread for you.
Thanks for the insight. Look forward to checking them out. They should arrive in the mail today.
