as if we needed more: "Athletes and football players in particular are very serious about the numbers that they wear on their jerseys. You have heard all the stories. Guys paying thousands of bucks to get "their" number away from a guy on the team who is already wearing it. There's a classic story about John Kruk selling his number to someone for a case of beer." I think you meant to write "fame." I see no shame in getting a free case of beer.
The only good part about the book "The Fan" (never saw the movie) was when the crazy guy killed the player's rival on the team because he wouldn't give up his number.
Good stuff, that'll be added... Wonder what kind of beer it was? For a case of the Style, it's worth it. MGD on the other hand...
i kept looking and came up with what looks like a transcript from kruk on Letterman, very funny: http://www.bigfool.com/kruk/93dl.htm
then there's another RBI'r story: "I don't care how much money he makes," Gooden said of Viola then. "He can have my locker. I'll take him to all the best restaurants and show him New York. He can even have my wife. But he can't have my number. No way."

I concur.
When Kruk played AAA, a friend of mine worked in the front office. Kruk would pay the clubbie kids to bring him beer after the game. One day he told the clubbie to make sure it was cans and not from the stadium tap because "last night I almost shit my wife". Love that quote.
Kruk's number for beer has been added to the Hall of Shame (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/hallofshame.shtml#KRUK). Doing a bunch of updates today, so if someone has the time try to find out more detail on the swap. Like what player, team and jersey #
