Title: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: fightonusc on 01/11/05, 11:20:17 AM
Well, the trade deadline has officially passed. So, unless you pick someone off of the Free Agent list, you've got the team that you're using for the rest of the season. Right now, the battle for first place looks to be between The Stiffs and The Nimrods, with a three-team battle for the final two playoff spots. Can The Poopydicks make a miracle run to get back into contention? Can The Creamy Pirates or The Fighting Tony Danzas play spoilers? We'll know more after this week's games.

Week 12:

Da ShitPaws @ The Poopydicks
BeefMaster @ The Creamy Pirates
The Stiffs @ The OC
The Fighting Tony Danzas @ The Nimrods

ShitPaws/Poopydicks starts off the week today. I'm going to try to blow through these as quickly as possible.

Lets go Poopydicks, start a run.  Get Jim Lindeman in your lineup, put Chester on the bench.  Trust me...

mclane really needs to start making "I (Heart) Poopydicks" T-shirts. The fans are demanding them.

SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU WANT TO WATCH THE VIDEO OF THE SHITPAWS/POOPYDICKS GAME BEFORE SEEING THE BOX SCORE, LOOK AWAY!!!

Game Summary:

Dave Bergman and Kevin Mitchell hit home runs as part of a five-run fifth inning to lift The Poopydicks' over Da ShitPaws 12-6 on Monday at Tengen Stadium. The victory was The Poppydicks' first in four games, and kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

The Poopydicks' (5-7) pitching dominated Da ShitPaws' (6-6) bats for most of the game. Fernando Valenzuela picked up the victory in relief with a dominating performance, striking out three and not allowing an earned run over the final five innings. He also contributed a two-run double in the seventh inning to give himself some insurance.

Da ShitPaws shot out of the gates quick, scoring five times on three home runs in the top of the first. The inning was highlighted by a three-run shot by Tim Teufel, his first home run of the season. However, Da ShitPaws could managed just 12 hits against The Poopydicks' stingy pitching.

Not he relieved, the pitchers Box Score orders by IP, but you can see from the batting box score that Fernando entered the game in the 5th.

I watched the video, that was neat...  The Shitpaws did absolutely nothing after the first.  Had the bases loaded in the 9th, but Armas couldn't capitalize....

I dissed Chet Lemon but he had a good game.  Lindeman came in for a double, I see he's batting over .700 - get him in the lineup Poopydicks!

Don't forget the pinch hitter boost.  Jimmy's place is on the bench, where he can dominate in the late innings.

He dominates all the time.  I say put him in, especially with the CPU making subs that aren't necessarily the best option.  He's the first sub on the Poopydicks so Lindeman typically gets one AB for the pitcher in the 5th or so.  He's underused in my book...

I just looked at the numbers and was surprised at how much power Lindeman has.  What the hell's Bergman doing in the starting line up?
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: Gantry on 01/11/05, 03:29:45 PM
I think Lindeman qualifies only at OF, so you can't sub him for Bergman..

I've been trying to talk myself into switching Chet and Lindeman but it's a very difficult decision.  I realize Lindeman has pure power, but Chet is a more complete player.  I have a lot of reflection to do.

All I can say is that I tried to move Hendrick off of the bench, where he was an almost token PH HR every game. After a few games of 1-5 outings, he's back on the bench where he belongs...

dude, that long single in the first inning by j.key had wallzie written all over it.  i'm surprised.
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: ultimate7 on 01/12/05, 09:35:21 AM
Yeah, I've seen the pitcher short hop the wall right there, but never hit it, that sure looked like a wallzie, maybe video should be posted on the site.
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: BeefMaster on 01/12/05, 09:41:26 AM
I thought it was a wallzie as well - it couldn't have been more than four or five pixels from being one.  I hadn't read Gantry's post until after I watched part 1 of the game, so I didn't know to expect it.  Of course, if it had gone for a homer, I think fightonusc would've made a bigger announcement.
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: ultimate7 on 01/12/05, 09:46:12 AM
I would swear I've seen wallzie's that were lower then that, maybe just down the left field line, but I thought I seen as low as ground level.
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12

has there ever been a report of a pitcher hitting a home run?
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12

Many have reported seeing the pitchers hit wallzie's, it is now accepted by most that it has happened and is possible.

Good stuff....

usc, is there a way to edit out that movie to only show the pitcher hit?  And can you use a higher quality (looks like it was sped up or there was frameskipping)?  What do you use to edit these videos?

I'd like to put that video clip on the media page (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/media.shtml) and link from the FAQ if we can isolate the AB...

I use Premiere Pro to edit the videos, and obviously, I have to downsize the videos in order to get them to a size that's somewhat managable. But, I can certainly just edit out the Jimmy Key hit for you. Lemme work on it for a bit.

Game Summary:

In a Fantasy RBI Baseball League game that often times resembled a heavweight boxing match, The Creamy Pirates continually tried to deliver a knockout blow to BeefMaster, but they kept getting right up and coming back. In the end, you can consider it a majority decision, as The Creamy Pirates held off the second of BeefMaster's big rallies for a 23-22 victory on Tuesday at Tengen Stadium.

The Creamy Pirates pulled out to a 15-6 after two innings, only to see BeefMaster respond with eight runs in the top of the third. The Creamy Pirates then extended the lead to 23-16 after seven innings, only to see BeefMaster score twice in the eighth and four times in the ninth to close to within one. However, Dave Righetti was able to get Dave Henderson to fly out with two on to end the game.

Doug DeCinces had a a career day, hitting three home runs and driving in seven for The Creamy Pirates (4-8), who broke a six-game losing streak and stayed in mathematical contention for a playoff spot. Darryl Strawberry and Mike Heath each added a pair of homers.

Don Baylor matched DeCinces with three home runs and seven RBI in the losing effort for BeefMaster (6-6), who fell into a momentary tie for the fourth and final playoff spot with Da ShitPaws, pending the outcome of the upcoming game between The OC and The Stiffs. Jimmy Key added three RBI for BeefMaster, including a near home run off the right field wall.

Post by: Gantry on 01/12/05, 01:00:14 PM
Solid, thanks usc!

Teddy PM'ed me with a very good point though:

"anyway... you might want to rethink putting up a movie from an edited rom that shows a pitcher coming close to a homerun.  to the nay-sayers, it won't really prove anything because anyone could change the pitcher's batting attributes and actually make him hit one out.

personally, i won't say it (pitcher HR) can never be done, but i am skeptical.  i understand that fightonusc didn't play with attributes or anything, but when someone watches the clip and sees the different numbers up there and the different colored teams, it will call the whole thing into question. "

He is right - those who are so opposed to the pitcher dinger aren't going to be won over by the different uniforms and possibly doctored stats.  Obviously we know they are legit, but I don't know how effective it will be.  That being said, should I put it up on the site?

Yes, put it up, who cares what naysayers think, we all respect Fightonusc's integrity enough to know it was a legit hit.

Post by: Gantry on 01/12/05, 01:33:18 PM
OK, I'll put it up with a disclaimer.  Though I have to shrink it down a bit, a bit green with video editing - 40MBfor an 11 second clip is a bit much.  Perhaps I can DIVX encode it? Doesn't have to be tiny, 10MB is better than 40. ...
Title: Re: Fantasy RBI Week 12
Post by: fightonusc on 01/12/05, 01:59:34 PM
Lemme resize it a bit - I can get it to 10 MB pretty easily, I think.

Trust me, if I was going to "fake" this:

- It would have been a real home run and not off the wall
- And it certainly wouldn't have been Jimmy Key

a couple comments

1. rice's ball at the beginning of part 5 was clearly foul.
2. please walk canseco with 3 run lead and first base open.

Game Summary:

It's only fitting that The Stiffs used an incredible comeback against The OC at Tengen Stadium on Wednesday  to become the first Fantasy RBI Baseball League team to clinch a playoff spot. After all, that's how they've played all season. Still, scoring seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for a 19-18 victory might be their greatest escape act yet.

After The Stiffs (9-3) closed to 18-15, The OC chose to let reliever Eric King pitch to Jose Canseco with two on and first base open. Predictably, Canseco ripped a 450 foot shot over the scoreboard in center to tie the score It was Canseco's third home run of the game and seventh RBI. Brian Downing followed with a double, and was knocked home by a Jack Clark single for the winning run.

The Stiffs received key hits in the ninth inning rally by pinch hitters Dickie Thon and Marc Sullivan, whose home run closed the gap to three runs. Willie Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. The Stiffs remained in a tie for first place heading into next week's huge showdown with The Nimrods.

The OC (6-6) fell into a three-way tie for third with the defeat. They squandered several golden opportunities to put The Stiffs away by stranding 10 runners. George Bell had a monster day, going 6 for 6 with three home runs.

A few more thoughts:

- Yes, Rice's hit was clearly foul, but the RBI ump didn't see it that way.
- As soon as Canseco came up, I just knew that ball was leaving the yard. Frankly, I thought that The Stiffs needed more than a one run lead there. Great job by Willie Hernandez to hold The OC in check in the ninth.
- I sensed that Puckett striking out to end the inning in the fifth with the bases loaded was going to come back to haunt The OC, and it did.
- I'm positive that at least one 7-7 team is going to make the playoffs now. Frankly, for my team and The Poopydicks at 4-8, it's not completely unrealistic to think that we could sneak in if we win our last two and a few things happen.

Why does the box list Bell has having a caught stealing?  I read through the inning-by-inning summary, and it doesn't look like he ever got out (3 homers, 3 singles, and there were 3 other outs every inning he singled).

Game Summary:

If one game could sum up the fortunes of two team's seasons, this one was it. The Nimrods clinched a playoff spot with the season's only first-inning stoppage, an 11-1 drubbing of the hapless Fighting Tony Danzas in a game played on Thursday at Tengen Stadium. The victory also clinched home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs for The Nimrods (9-3), and set up an epic game against The Stiffs for first place.

Phil Garner's drive to the left field warning track was the only blemish on The Nimrods' offensive day. Tom Brunansky had the big blow, a three-run homer. But outside of Garner, every other Nimrods batter reached base.

The Fighting Tony Danzas (3-9) were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the defeat. Roger Clemens gave up 12 hits and 10 earned runs in just 1/3 of an inning to pick up the loss. The only hit for The Fighting Tony Danzas was Tim Raines' leadoff triple. Raines scored on Alan Trammell's sacrifice fly.

It all comes down to this final game Nimrods.  Home field is on the line.  Both teams on a big roll going into this game.  Hrbek and Dawson will be dueling for the MVP award.

Big Kent has assured victory for the Stiffs.  He also mentioned that he owned Bert Blyleven back in Minnesota and that he will likely "go yard on that dutch bitch".

Bobby Ojeda has also guaranteed a win and that he will probably be 8-12 beers deep by the opening pitch.

Cant wait for this game.  Good luck Nimrods and hope to see you in the series.
