I'm starting to think Detroit the best team overall, even better than the All-Stars.
Since we have been keeping stats Detroit's record against the Na-Stars is 3-1. And overall Detroit is 21-14. National is 12-11. Not definately strong numbers, but Detroit is always tough to beat, even with the all-stars.
What does everyone think? Remember we play curve style(strike play)- Which means you can throw the ball anywhere, but if the batter takes and it is a ball, then the next pitch has to be down the middle. So I think the difference is Alexander he's good.
detroit is very good, maybe better than national, but not american. american has WAY better pitchers (not the best in the game, but decent). a lineup with molitor-mattingly-bell-canseco-ripken-mcguire-brett-seitzer cant be beat, theyre all the best.
Detriot better than the NL All-Stars???? Wow, that is very bold. Detriot is a very good team but my money definitly goes with the NL Stars. The stars have much better power up and down the lineup. I really think the ability to hit HR in your style of play is the most decisive factor. Whenever you take for a ball the odds of you scoring on a HR on the next straight pitch are much greater with NL than with detriot. If you are disiplined enough and can work a fair number of straight pitches you'll be in a position to score more runs.
I admit maybe that American is probably better than Dt because Jkey and Saberhagen are good.
But the NA Stars pitching is weak in our style, they dont have hard throwers, Vlnzla gets knocked around because he throws so slow, and in our style he cant throw that great curveball off the plate to much. Also Detroits hitters are better than Na Stars hitters as a whole. The only weak link in Detroits lineup might be Whitaker. Na Stars Dawson, Murphy and Guerrero are great, but EDavis and Scmidt rarely go deep and the others are no better that whittaker. In my opinion.
Another point with our style we rarely hit a homer on that straight pitch we get, usually it is pulled foul or popped up. Pitching is still the main issue.
Try playing some Detroit - Na Games head to head, you might be suprised.
thats what im trying to say. national doesnt have as good of a team as everyone thinks. sandburg sucks (i hate to say it since im a cubs fan), santiago sucks, edavis is ok sometimes, schmidt sucks, gallarraga sucks, pedrique sucks. The only really Good players are raines, dawson, murphy, and guerrero. Detroit is more reliable and can beat NA. American, on the other hand, is easily number 1, like I said before. The first 4 guys on detroit combined are just as good as the good NA players i listed above. plus, detroit also has lemon, whittaker, and brookens, and 3 or 4 good subs. national cant make a solid lineup; theres just too many people to take out and not enough subs.
the only thing national might have better is pitchers, but if you are patient, it really doesnt matter too much.
Detroit is my team but it's absurd to compare them to the All-Star teams, especially when the appropriate substitutions are made. When the NL has a lineup of Raines, Guerrero, Murphy, Dawson, Davis, Schmidt, Kruk, and Gwynn, Detroit just doesn't stack up. Maybe on a good day Detroit could match the NL, but they can't consistently beat them. There's a reason they're the All-Stars....
I have to go with my dawg on this one. To me there isn't much comparison...NL stars all the way. However, this topic is too important for just 4 people to be chimming in. I have yet to see a debate about a team being better than an all-star team. Hopefully we can get more of the forum to throw their to cents in as well.
If you had two quality RBI players going head to head in a 7 game series, I'd bet that the player controlling Detroit couldn't pull off more than 2 games. The NL has too many weapons on offense and the pitching isn't great for either team. The only true advantage I'd give to Detroit is that you don't have to sub in many players in the beginning of the game. I usually sub either Sheridan or Madlock for Herndon, but leave the rest of the line up alone until I need a clutch hit. With the NL, I usually wind up subbing for Santiago and Pedrique right away and sometimes Gallaraga. This leaves only one guy to pinch hit later. Outside of the shortcoming of the starting line-up, I'd say advantage NL all the way. (this was way longer than I intended...sorry!)
Let's look at this by line-up:
Trammel vs. Raines
Both of these guys are good for about a homer a game (depending on pitching style), but the nod goes to Raines who has a bit more power and is the second fastest player in the game. On a scale of 1-10, Trammel gets a 6 and Raines gets an 7.5
Gibson vs. Kruk
There is really no comparison here. Gibson is simply one of the best players in the game while Kruk is struggling to be mediocre. Gibson takes this spot 8.5 to 4.5
Evans vs. Murphy
Tough, very tough. Both of these guys rake. However, Evans has been known to choke sometimes by popping out. Plus, Murphy is decidedly faster on the bases. Murphy is my all-time favorite player so I may have some bias here, but Murphy gets the edge 9 to 8.5
Nokes vs. Dawson
While Nokes does have some very good pop, he gives up too many easy outs and is VERY slow. Dawson is possibly the best player in the game and takes it 9.5 to 7
Madlock vs. Davis
There is a good debate about who to insert at this point for DT, but I prefer Madlock. It really doesn't matter for this analysis because the benches will be considered as well later on. It also doesn't matter because Davis possesses one of the best power/speed combos in the game. Although not as consistent as Murphy and Dawson, Davis gets an 8.5 and Madlock gets a 7
Lemon vs. Schmidt
Closer than you might think. Schmidt has slightly more power and both are slow. Lemon is famous for his end-of-the-bat homers and is very competent at the plate, but I give Schmidt a 7 and Lemon a 6.5
Whitaker vs. Guerrero
Geurrero more power and combining that with his first-at-bat boost as pinch hitter, he is significantly better than Sweet Lou. Guerrero 8, Whitaker 6
Brookens vs. Gwynn
Brookens is very underated as a hitter, and he is better than Gwynn by a landslide except for the speed department. Brookens is also clutch, leading to his 7 to 5 edge.
Bench
This is laughable. After using all your NL pinch hitters in the starting lineup, you have NOBODY. In best Warner Wolf: NO-BO-DY! Wether you use Madlock or Sheridan for Herndon, the other guy is here and would start for most teams. Mix in Heath and Bergman, and this is a very good bench. I give NL some points for the possibility of subbing Kruk for Pedrique and leaving Sandberg in. 7 to 3
Pitching
I find that these staffs are very similar until you get to one spot, the closer. I can't wait to face either of these two teams' starters. Valenzuela is basically Alexander from the left side and I can't think of more similar pitchers than Morris and Sutcliffe. Even Franco and Hernandez are similar. The power and run producing ability of each team means the starters probably won't determine the game, but no matter who you use in those late innings, Detroit does not have a Bedrock. He has a very good mix of speed and curve and I find he lasts longer than most relievers. NL takes pitching 7.5 to 6.
I just added the ratings and both have 69.5 points. NL is better by virtue of winning 7 of 10 categories. I'm tired, I think I'll go to bed now.
Big Hath with the breakdown!!! Fantastic job!
a little biased, but it was quite convincing. i still think detroit can keep up with national, but maybe not beat them.
Although i don't think Detroit is the best team, I think they can compete with either of the all-star teams. I'm sure Detriot would tear up the AL stars' weak relief pitching.
Detroit. I don't play All-Stars so I wouldn't know.
