Title: Fantasy League Week 14 - Electric Boogaloo!
Post by: fightonusc on 01/25/05, 01:47:04 PM
I've been wanting to do that all season...

OK, it's here. The last week of the regular season is upon us. We've got three teams fighting for one playoff spot, and it's going to be very interesting to see how this shakes down.

Individually, the MVP race has tightened up. Will Andre Dawson hold on to take the title, or will votes shift to late surges from Kent Hrbek and George Bell. Will Darrell Evans and Ruppert Jones split the Poopydicks vote? And, who put the bomp in the bomp sha-bomp sha-bomp?

Anyway, the first game is The OC @ The Poopydicks, hopefully later today.

Game Summary:

The Poopydicks used clutch hitting by Bill Buckner to pull away from The OC 16-13 on Tuesday at Tengen Stadium and keep alive their Fantasy RBI Baseball playoff hopes.

Buckner hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give The Poopydicks (7-7) a one-run lead. Buckner added an RBI double with two outs in the eighth to pad The Poopydicks' lead. John Franco and Todd Worrell combined for two scoreless innings to close out The OC (7-7).

George Bell was again a one-man wrecking crew for The OC, which had already clinched a playoff spot. Bell hit three homers and drove in six as he continued his late push for MVP contention.

The Poopydicks' victory means that they will clinch the fourth and final playoff spot with a loss by BeefMaster in their upcoming game against The Nimrods.

I find it very amusing that Doyle Alexander's league-leading ERA (9.48) will drop a bit after that giving up 3 earned runs in 3 innings.  I think it's time to raise the mound at Tengen Stadium.

Has playoff format been discussed?  Is it single elim or best of something?

I think originally it was best of 7 for both rounds. I'm not opposed to making it best of 5 for the semis and Best of 7 for the World Series, if the participants don't object.

Whatever you want to do is fine.  If you do best of 7 for both rounds, it's just a more games for you to do.  5 and 7 is probably enough.

I agree with Ultimate7 - best of 5 is plenty for the early round.

I agree with the 5 game format for the early rounds.  Gives Tudor a better chance of controlling a series and winning it singlehandedly.  ;)

i think 5 and 7 is a great format, should we use alternating starting pitchers?  of course i'd be in favor of it.

I tend to think that your team is your team - the way we play, you have your starter, your long relief, your set-up guy and your closer.

Video of BeefMaster @ U7 is up at the site (http://fantasyrbi.rbicentral.com/Media/Media.html). The final playoff spot is decided, and this game is, as they say in Mexican soccer, a Superclasico...

Game Summary:

BeefMaster's playoff life came down to a classic confrontation with one out in the ninth inning - the league's most dominant hitter versus the most dominant closer. And in this case, pitching not only won the game, it won a playoff berth. Scott Garrelts struck out Andre Dawson with two one and got Will Clark to line out to second to preserve a 14-13 victory over The Nimrods on Wednesday and clinch the final Fantasy RBI Baseball League playoff spot.

BeefMaster (7-7) looked like they were going to pull away from a listless Nimords (10-4) team that ahd clinched hom-field throughout the playoffs. However, The Nimrods cut into a 14-13 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Jesse Orosco and Gary Gaetti both reached base to start the ninth, it appeared that The Nimrods would pull out yet another dramatic victory. But it wasn't to be, as Garrelts was able to shut the door and preserve the game for winner Bruce Hurst, who gave up two earned runs over three innings for the win.

BeefMaster won with a balanced offense and some clutch hitting. Glenn Davis was 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI, while Reggie Jackson and Gary Carter also went deep. The Nimrods were done in by an uncharcteristic inability to capitalize on opportunities, stranding nine runners during the game. Will Clark went deep twice for The Nimrods in defeat.

As good as Garrelts was in relief, I have to give the game ball to Bruce Hurst. He came in and shut down the Nimrods' bats and gave his offense a chance to take the lead and build a cushion.

Congratulations BeefMaster. And also to The Poopydicks for showing so much heart during the season to get in position to make the playoffs in the first place.

Yay for my team.  Y'all better watch out in the playoffs - in my fantasy football league this year, I came into the playoffs with the #7 seed and emerged as league champion.  On the other hand, in the first Fantasy RBI league, I came into the playoffs as the top seed and got smoked in the World Series.

I believe that by using the word "y'all" I have reduced my apparent IQ by 30 points.

Game Summary:

You wouldn't have known which team was headed to the Fantasy RBI Baseball League playoffs and which one was staying home from the play at Tengen Stadium on Thursday, as Da ShitPaws throttled a sloppy Stiffs squad 16-5 in a five-inning rout.

Mark McGwire hit two home runs for Da ShitPaws (7-7), who finished in a four-way tie for third place but lost out on a playoff spot on tiebreakers. Howard Johnson added a three-run shot to key a seven-run fifth inning to put Da ShitPaws comfortably ahead. Mike Scott picked up the victory by holding The Stiffs hitless for three innings in relief.

The Stiffs (9-5) scored all their runs off of four home runs, but three of those were solo shots. That included Kent Hrbek's 19th home run of the season in the first inning, and starting pitcher Bobby Ojeda's inside the park homer. The Stiffs had clinched home field for their first round match-up against The OC before the game was played.

In case people are wondering how things were broken down for the tiebreaker with four teams finishing tied:

First, it went to head-to-head between the four teams. The final records there were:

BeefMaster 4-2
The OC 3-3
The Poppydicks 3-3
Da ShitPaws 2-4

So, that put BeefMaster into one playoff spot, and knocked Da ShitPaws out. So, we had to break the tie between The OC and The Poopydicks. They split the regular season series, so we went to run differential during the regular season, the edge going to The OC. So, they received the other playoff spot based on a better run differential than The Poopydicks.

However, after those four teams were set, we have to seed the teams for the playoffs. Since BeefMaster and The OC were tied for third, we had to braek that tie. In this case, they split their regular season match-up, so we again had to go to run differential and again The OC had the edge. So, the match ups are...

(1) The Nimrods vs. (4) BeefMaster
(2) The  Stiffs vs. (3) The OC

Game Summary:

For two teams battling to avoid last place, this game was anything but meaningless. And in the end, The Creamy Pirates were able to find enough offense to defeat The Fighting Tony Danzas 18-13 in the final Fantasy RBI Baseball League game of the regular season on Friday afternoon at Tengen Stadium.

Tom Brookens capped a breakout season for The Creamy Pirates (5-9) with a big offensive outing. Brookens was  4 for 6 with three home runs and seven RBI. Cal Ripken added four RBI while Doug DeCinces and Miek Heath each drove in three.

Eric Davis and Craig Reynolds each drove in three for The Fighting Tony Danzas (4-10) in the defeat.
