Title: Where do you stand in the box?
Post by: Big Apple RBI Champ on 01/26/05, 03:42:35 PM
Where do you usually stand in the batter's box?  I always go all the way toward the pitcher, and lean out over the plate.  Do you move back to protect plate when you get behind in the count?

I move around to keep the pitcher guessing and to build up momentum at the point of contact.

I move all the way up towards the pitcher.  Mostly because i'm impatient, swing early, and pull a lot of balls.  I used to modify the timing in the Nesticle emulator so that the game play was faster.

If the score is close and i'm behind in the count, I often move all the way back so that I get a better look at the pitch.

For the most part, I'm all the way up in the box.

Common sense tells me to stay mid box with enough bat coverage to cover and pitch in the strike zone.  Everytime I try this I K.

My only change is when the pitcher gets tired.  At that moment, I drop to the bottom of the box.  That way my super slow reflexes have time to judge the pitch, thus increasing my chances at solid contact.

I pretty much always play at the top of the box.  Always have, probably always will.

When I played Beej online his strategy amazed me.  He starts at the bottom and then slides up when he swings.  I've been experimenting with that stance lately, especially while practicing for curve pitch.  Gives much more time to look at the pitch.

retreat (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/glossary.shtml)

I know Gantry gets a boner when people post things from the main site, so there it is.  I think my style comes from a few different reasons.  First, I don't like the pitcher to know where I am when he throws the pitch.  2nd, I have ADD, so I get hyper and move around in the box.  Lastly is what has already been said, it gives me a little more time to see the pitch.

I am always front (top) of box.  I think there are probably better ways to do it, but after so many years of playing this way, I think it would be unwise to try and "unlearn" this way of raking.

I think if you are way back in box (bottom of screen) then it is too easy to jam you.  You can throw a pitch that breaks in on you and is a strike, but there's no way to hit it.

I am impressed that with this crowd there hasn't been a box-vagina reference.  Very mature boys.

I was under the impression that No No and his crew have already beat you, and forced you to change your name to EX-Champ.  So don't worry about the "competition" until you take down a tourney for yourself.

We usually don't use the 1 SP rule, but I don't think that'll be a big adjustment for us.  It's gonna be ON come Sunday.

You guys don't even have a working NES?  How do you play?

Bly took me down in the last tournament.  He played great.  But I'm a great player.

We only play on special occasions now.  But don't worry buddy, it's like riding a bike.  We won't miss a beat.

I always employ the Retreat method.  It works well with whatever messed up sense of timing I've got in my head.  The only time I don't retreat is if I'm predicting a slowball, and in that case I'll stay at the top of the box.  If I guess wrong, I'll just pull it foul or miss entirely.

All retreat, all day, all night...

Does anyone actually bat in the middle of the box and stay there?

Every once in a long while I'll hang out in the middle of the box or all the way at the bottom, to work on some patience in waiting for the pitch.  It rarely lasts very long though.  The results are rarely effective for me.

I bat like this, too.  I will back off a bit if I can't see so good (usually when I pitcher is fresh and my opponent is particularly "on").

Why isn't Tampax's slogan this: "We're not number one, but we're right up there." ???
