Sent you an email already, but I'll definitely try to attend and promote the tourney on the site. There are a few chi-town RBI fans out there. Remember a couple college guys from Dekalb and Carbondale who sent me emails....
The site URL is here (will add to the links page as well):
http://www.iwu.edu/~mbeales
And I have no problem promoting any upcoming RBI tourney on the main site. Tourneys are probably the best way to get people out and playing...
Sounds like a good set up for a tourny, is this a curve-style or straight pitch?
The Official RBI Baseball Championship of the Universe Tournament places no rules on pitching. Therefore, most players will pitch everything (curves, sliders, and fastballs). We believe pitching is a forte in RBI Baseball (despite the fact that many people feel the pitching sucks in RBI) and encourage all types of pitches to keep the batter guessing.
I am familiar with straight ball (sb) and do agree that it makes for fun games once in while. Yet, there are no rules in this tournament that sb must be played. Therefore, anything concerning pitching goes. Bring it!!!

i dont know gantry... it would be interesting to see a striaght pitch veteran like yourself attempt to hit curve style...
Kick ass man, im in
Gantry, you mentioned DeKalb again, and I was reading a resume tonight and the guy (who works for me) had DeKalb high school class of 1985 in it. Said it was in Auburn, IN. Is this the same DeKalb you speak so fondly of?
That would be another Dekalb, which is rather scary. Our Dekalb is in Illinois, about 50 miles West of Chicago. Typical midwest farming town with a Division 1 college (Northern Illinois University) smack dab in the middle. Its claims-to-fame are Cindy Crawford and the guy who invented barbed wire...
HUGE UPDATE ON THE TOURNAMENT!!!
Since we are receiving several committments to the tournament at an extremely quick pace, we have decided to pursue the possibility of making this tournament a 32 player tournament. Definitely making it the largest R.B.I. Baseball Tournament I have ever heard of. The biggest to date that I know of has been our first tournament with 16 players (Let me know if you have proof of a bigger one, I'm really interested ;D). So we have started "The Campaign for 32" in an attempt to increase participation, prize money, and competition in our tournament.
SmokedUBad
www.dee-nee.com/rbi/mbeales - The Official R.B.I. Baseball COTUT
that is impressive... the biggest rbi tournament i have been involved in had four participants. 32 players... wish i could get involved in something like that but i dont think i'll be able to make it to the windy city any time soon.
Update: We officially have 8 players now who have committed to the tournament. This means that we have half of the roster filled for the next tournament. Also, we have another 4-5 potential players who will probably be committing soon.
The website has been updated again with results and completed brackets from the First Biannual R.B.I. Baseball Championship of the Universe Tournament. Check out www.dee-nee.com/rbi/mbeales/2000.html for that update.
We are continuing the "Campaign for 32" and recruiting players from around the Chicagoland and Kokomo, IN areas. Recruiting will continue throughout the summer as it will be very difficult (yet we still believe possible) to get 32 players to participate. Once again, we would greatly appreciate anyone who would be willing to promote our tournament or pass it on. Just hand out the the homepage address. Thanks again!!!

If you guys expand to 32, count me in. I'll try to bring a roommate or two, but they would be a tough sell. Even if you only get 16, I'll probably pop in and get a few pics for the website...
32 people is going to take a LONG time, multiple TVs are a must....
I live in Iowa City, Iowa. This is probably a really stupid question, but do you have any idea how long of a trip it would be for me? Is your suburb north, south, east, or west of chicago?
Concerning Gantry's Post (Two Above):
That would be sweet if you could make it to the tournament (whether or not you play). And if you do play, bring as many people as you like. Yes, we will definitely have multiple Nintendos at each location. And we're working on making it at one location with 4 Nintendos. Pics on the site covering the tournament would be awesome, too. That would be going above and beyond (on your part) to advertise for the tournament. Everything you've done so far for us concerning getting the word out has been greatly appreciated. Kudos to you man, kudos to you!!!

Concerning pedriqrules' Post (Two Above):
Mapquest says it would be about a 3 hour and 45 minute drive to the tournament locations. Although I'm sure you could easily knock off a good 30-45 minutes if you travel above 55 mph (Mapquest bases their times on the speed limit, as if people really obey it). I'm guessing it would be about a 3 hour - 3 hour and 15 minute drive. We are located in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago. Thanks for the question and we'd love to see you make it if you could.

Update on E-mails:
I've received several e-mails the past few days from potential players. The sole purpose of the website is to get the word out and recruit players from everywhere. We currently have players who have committed from Illinois and Indiana. And I've been receiving e-mails from people in Florida, Virginia, and California who were interested (along with the post above from Iowa). If you think you can make it into Chicago for a few days, we'd be overwhelmed to have you!!!
The site has mostly been updated to its fullest potential (including the first tournament seeds, brackets, and results). Starting next week, we will be looking for corporate sponsorship from Tengen and Nintendo. We're going to see if there is anything they can do to promote the tournament or possibly give us free giveaways (such as shirts or whatever) for the participants.

Question on the tourney...SmokedUBad, above you said that anything goes when it comes to pitching. Does that mean that we could use up all four pitchers throughout the course of the game, or do we have to stay with the same pitcher?
Yes, we place no rules on pitching or pitchers in the tournament. Therefore, you may use all your team's pitchers in one game since you will never be using that team again in that specific series. Hence, most people end up using all their pitchers as this makes it more difficult for the opponent to hit. Thanks for the question.

A promo for the tourney is up on the main page (as well as the links) and I'll be sure to keep people up-to-date at least once a month. In case you don't know the link, click the Dee-Nee Forums text in the upper-left corner...
Damn Gantry, it says on the front that you're not gonna participate in the tourney because its curve pitch. You've got months to train for that. I think if you're gonna be there anyway that you best represent and enter yourself in the tourney.
smokedUbad,
your tourney sounds great. we definitely need to talk, because i have a crew out here in the west coast who play curve style, and think that they are the best in the world.
chicago in the winter time might be difficult for us, but maybe we can get something else together for the near future.
-dennis
We like playing only one starting pitcher per game. You should try this, its a great challenge in a 7-game series scenario.
-dennis
Mr. Ubad,
this sounds more than enticing...its about a 15 hour trip from here in worcester MA, but my freind works for an airline so maybe i can get a few days out and head out there...t too if hed be willing....this would be something that we could never get around here, because no one really ever wants to play RBI, let alone set up a tourney....i will definately keep in touch...
Concerning Dennis a.k.a. dkshaft's posts (Two and Three Above):
I'm sorry to hear you probably won't be able to make it to Chicago during the winter. But if things change be sure to let me know, we'd love to have you. Yes, we also have some hot heads who feel we are the best at curve. So I agree that we should try and set something up (Summer maybe?). We'll keep in touch.
Regarding your one starting pitcher rule... That sounds insane. I can imagine some high scoring games with that rule in effect. Not to mention the fact that pitching is so much more of a skill when you play like that. I'll be sure to give it a try. Later.

Concerning bban7700's post (Two Above):
That'd be excellent if you could actually attend the tournament. Players from California, Florida, Virginia, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois (of course), and now yourself from Massachusetts have all inquired about the tournament. You never know, airfare is low (esp. after 9/11) so maybe you'll be able to get out here and play some ball.
I think that's sad that noone is really willing to play out there. R.B.I. is without a doubt the greatest game ever. Nothing will ever replace the memories. Personally, I think R.B.I. is fairly big out here in the midwest (I think Gantry and his pals would probably back me up on this). I can't recall a friend of mine who ever had Nintendo, yet didn't have R.B.I. Baseball. The two have always seemed to go hand in hand with the kids in this area. Talk to ya later man. Good to hear from the East Coast.

Update on the Tournament:
Recruiting for the tournament over the holiday weekend was successful. We picked up another 4 and now officially have 12 players who have committed to the tournament. That means that there are only four spots available for the 16 man tournament. We will continue recruiting this weekend and hope to come close to fulfilling the 16 player roster by the next update.
Once again, we are asking everybody to get the word out so that we can get another 20 players to make this a 32 player tournament. We have all summer and are hoping that this will happen as this would be our ultimate goal for the tournament.
Also, I will start working on sponsorship from Tengen and Nintendo later this week when I get home from college.
Another final note, I will be leaving for home in a couple days and will not have time to update the site every couple of days as I have been recently. However, I will be updating the site and this forum (with player info and such) every Tuesday. So please be patient as there will be weekly updates during the summer and I may take a longer time to get back to you. Don't forget you can always e-mail me at SmokedUBad@aol.com.
Just put "RBI Baseball" in the subject line. Thanks.

Hey I added your link to our website. If you get a chance check out our West Coast Rules section on our RBI website. http://rbibaseball.tripod.com/home.html. This outlines the rules we have set for competitive RBI play.
Would love to discuss seriously some sort of summer tourney situation, anytime in the future. Do you guys ever get out to sunny California?

Some comments:
GDavis - Given that there are already 12 people signed up, it is fairly certain that I will be in the tourney. We are having a very tough time with curves and most of the dee-nee crew isn't into curve yet (meaing most of my games until tourney time would be straight pitch). I will train myself for the tourney (if it gets to 32), but it's tough to change a 10-year style of play. Back to my Searching for Bobby Fischer analogy....
Dennis - Since we started dabbling in curves (for a whole week now), we've adopted all your rules. I like the one starting pitcher - two starters is too much for us right now, as we never do anything when a pitcher is fresh. We do head out to Vegas every year, so maybe we can set something up, though it'll be tricky...
Mike - If I do end up entering myself, I'll have one (perhaps two) training partners who will be in as well. Though we would like to have our games scheduled relatively close together. Is this possible? Also, I highly doubt you are going to get any sort of sponsorship. First off, I'm pretty sure that Tengen is no longer a company. Second, Nintendo and Tengen were involved in a huge lawsuit over Tetris and as a result Tengen released all their game without a license from Nintendo. Good luck though...
IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE LOCATIONS/TIMES OF THE TOURNAMENT:
Gantry,
That would be wonderful if you could join and bring a friend or two (when we approach 32 players). That would tremendously help the tournament and we'd greatly appreciate it because the last few players will be the hardest ones to get. It always turns out that the last 5 or so are nearly impossible to find.
I don't exactly know what you mean when you say "scheduled relatively close together." But we'll see what we can do. However, this might help (and this is directed to other players thinking about joining also)....
Everyone,
If we get 32 players, we will be looking to rent either a union hall or some large room, possibly either a vacancy in a strip mall or a hotel conference room. Then we can put up 4 Nintendos in that single room and hold all the games at that single location. In this case, the tournament series times (and maybe even the dates for the tournament) will probably be decreased. For example, we would no longer have two games (each occuring at a different location) being played at once. We would instead have four games being played at once, one for each Nintendo that we have set up. This would decrease the length of the tournament tremendously. Also, the whole tournament would be held at one location as opposed to the scheduled two. This would help people who come in groups with friends so that they won't be split up and won't have to travel or wait as long as three days for the entire tournament to be finished.
Once again, none of this is official. But if we get 32:
1. We will most likely have the tournament held at one location with multiple Nintendos and
2. The tournament would most likely be decreased to two days. Let me make it clear that no matter what happens, it will still start on the 27th of December. That date will not change as people have plans to arrive that day to start the tournament. In short, if anything changes with the dates, the tournament would probably end a day early. This shouldn't mess up anyone's plans.

im a big fan of what is going on here....within the next couple weeks, i should be able to pin down whether or not i and possibly t can go....this would be an event like none have ever seen...
bban7700:
That's awesome. I just talked to my VP who is helping me run this tournament and we have agreed to pick up anybody who needs a ride from the airport. So if you're in the tournament and need a lift to either a hotel or whatever, we will gladly pick you up. Consider it a sort of promo for getting out-of-staters to join the tournament. I wish you luck man. Looking forward to seeing you!!!
Also, this is the first post where I'm going to say that I honestly feel we are going to get 32 players. Esp. if Gantry & friends, pedriqrules, and yourself get into the tournament. Then it's a definite that there will be 32 players for the Second Biannual R.B.I. Baseball Championship of the Universe Tournament.

Alright people, I'm going to have to ask everyone to hang with us here as we are having some technical difficulties concerning the tournament site. It appears as though I can't update the site unless I'm on campus (because the site is saved on the campus server which apparently can only be accessed while on campus). This poses a minor problem since I do not attend school during the summer and my college is 120 miles from my home.
I'm either going to have to;
A) find a way to update the site from my home (which is why I'm calling information technologies tomorrow to see if this is possible),
B) find a new site to host the tournament website, or
C) take occasional (possibly even weekly) trips down to my college to update the site. Yes, this would suck. But if it is the only way to update the site and keep everyone informed I will make that sacrafice.
I will, somehow, find a way to update the site on June 4th with it's biggest update yet. This update will include new info on the 32 player tournament, the addition of new players, and the latest info on how we're working to hold the tournament at one location (as opposed to two). Thanks and later.

"The Campaign for 32" has had tremendous success over the past two weeks. The Second Biannual R.B.I. Baseball Championship of the Universe Tournament will officially be a 32 player tournament. We gained support from another four players who have committed to the tournament bringing the total number of committed participants to 16. Meaning that the tournament is halfway full, leaving only 16 spots available.
The committed list does not include four other potential players (who will probably be joining sometime soon) or the e-mail that I have received from R.B.I. players in Rockford, IL (who are considering bringing up to 5 players into the tournament). Also, the committed list doesn't include Gantry or his pals :). So we're hoping they will be able to make it. These possible additions to the tournament could leave only 5-6 spots available, which is truly incredible. The 32 dream is becoming more and more of a reality each and every week. Later people.

I question the name of the last person who posted, "Pedrique Rules", I would love to be matched up against him in the tourney. Pedrique is as bad as Santana.
I may plan a roadtrip after XMas from New York to Chi Town with my roomate, I am glad it is curve pitch, I really don't acknowledge slow pitch play as a competitive means of RBI. 32 heads would be the bomb!
UPDATE:
We have completed and added the finished brackets to the website. The finished brackets include dates, televisions, and times. As of now there are only two televisions used. There is the possibility that we might be able to add another two televisions to the tournament. This would make the days/sessions shorter.
Based upon popular demand, we have decided to divide the tournament into sessions. This enables players to play their session and leave so that they don't have to spend the entire day at the tournament. The first day consists of four sessions. The second day consists of three sessions. And the final day is reserved for the top 6 players in the tournament.
E-mail me with comments or suggestions on improving the brackets. Thanks.

I just wanted to point out that RBI baseball is amasing and what u all have done with your own tournaments and this website is clearly amasing. i am only 16 years old and going to be a junior in high school. Our Amsterdam, New York Franchise still has many years left for our organization. i am sorry to the people that though i lived in new york city as posted on our event site. that was just a mis-understanding. I have updated the main page and my tourney page with info regarding your tourney. We now have an East Coast, West Coast and Midwest tourneys this year. Most excellent!

PEACE - Kyle - [just kyle] ;D
I dunno about God, but I'm happy to help. There are plenty of East Coast RBI'ers who visit, and I'm sure a few will come and play in your tourney...
I made the drive from NYC to Albany back in March, and it wasn't too bad. Since you plan to do it all in one day, I expect you NYC people to head on down to Amsterdam and play. Hopefully you can top the 32-man tourney we are going to have in Chicago...
REGARDING THE BACKYARD BETRAYAL TOURNAMENT OF THE WORLD:
It's just too bad that the whole thing fell apart. I mean, it was originally a tournament for anyone. Then when I called about entering, Kyle Cetnar said that it was only a 'district tournament'. Makes you wonder why he says that the tournament is being promoted 'throughout the nation from Chicago'. Also makes you wonder why he calls it the Championship of the World when only people (and of course people being no girls, because 'no girls allowed. They will be tossed out') within 5 miles of his house can join. Pretty much bullshit if you ask me. Anyway, just had to get that off my back.

P.S. Updates on the Second Biannual R.B.I. Baseball COTUT coming soon.
its a small city where everyone seems to play rbi baseball
UPDATE ON THE SECOND BIANNUAL R.B.I. BASEBALL COTUT:
It's been a while since I've posted anything on the Official R.B.I. Baseball COTUT post. We have several updates regarding the tournament/site.
First and foremost, there are only a few spots remaining for the Second Biannual R.B.I. Baseball COTUT roster. This is amazing as the "Campaign for 32" is finally becoming a reality. Therefore, those still interested in joining should send out their entry forms/money immediately in order to join the tournament.
Second, we are going to create a reserve list since more than 32 players are expected to join. This list will include substitutes (reserves) who will fill in for players on the roster who are unable to attend the tournament. Reserves should send in their entry forms/money in order to be put on the reserve list. Reserves will be notified if a player on the roster is unable to attend the tournament. They will then have the choice of filling in for that unavailable person. Reserves who do not play will have their money returned to them. E-mail me with any questions.
Third, we are continuously pushing to get more out-of-staters and diehards into the tournament to increase competition. The more that we have, the better the tournament will be. Therefore, if you are an out-of-stater or hardcore player and want to join the tournament, e-mail me and let me know. I might be able to make room for you on the roster (as opposed to being placed on the reserve list). This would guarantee that you would get to play in the tournament. Some of this might seem complicated, therefore if you have any questions at all please feel free to e-mail me.
Concerning the website; The Official R.B.I. Baseball COTUT website has been updated to its full potential including info on the next tournament, past tournament history, stats and rankings, and links to other R.B.I. sites. Surf the site to find tournament info, stats/rankings on your favorite teams, and links to awesome R.B.I. sites.
As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. Don't miss out on the largest, most competitive R.B.I. Baseball tournament ever. The tournament that will determine the true Champion of the Universe.
