Title: Strawman
Post by: Big Apple RBI Champ on 07/12/02, 11:21:54 AM
One person overlooked in all of our "best player in the game" comments is Strawberry.  He is sick.  Other than Baylor, maybe the best combo of power and speed in the game.  Too bad Backman (or Teufel or Heep) protects him.

He is definitely a stud, and I have him at #3 on my rankings, behind Potatoes & Evans.  Joyner was there, but he is slumping and has now moved down a couple spots.  He was really shining for me in curve...

don baylor is one of the most overrated players in the game... his speed rating might say one but he is a turtle...  i get so frustrated with grimace that he usually winds up sitting in place of hendu.

Don Baylor has got lots of power and has good speed to bring to the slow sox.

i disagree with gwynn 3k about baylor.  he runs well and hits the piss out of the ball.

i am glad that grimace is productive for you guys...because he is worthless for me.    i know he can hit but there is no way he should be "A" speed...

Baylor is awesome, definitely the best BoSock.  Extra Base hitting machine.  Probably leads the league in doubles because of his speed.

Baylor certainly has the raw numbers, but I hit best with Jim Rice....

As for the speed, the RBI Manager shows him at a 136, which is a C using their revised ratings.  He is the 21st fastest guy in the game and has the exact same speed as Chili, Doran, Puhl and Tommy Herr.  So he's got some wheels but is certainly no A speed....

Strawberry is the most balanced player in the game. Speed-power-contact, he has it all. One of the best all-around players in the game for sure. His numbers in the FRBI league proves this.

Should mention that my rankings don't involve all-stars....

So our top3 is the same - Jackson, Evans, Straw

In watch mode, no.

You go back---jack---do it again. Straw is the best lefty, you are not valuing his speed enough. He's more productive than the other two guys you have ranked higher. He goes from 1st to 3rd/home better than both of them, 2nd to home better, and avoids more double plays. He'll score more runs over the course of a 24 game season than those two, and at the same time, provide sufficient pop. Jacksn and Evans are not going to out-homer him by some drastic margin, so that value of power is not as significant as you'd think. Evans hits into a shitload of double plays, and gets thrown out a lot on the bases, so his overall production is not that great---he does hit bombs though and is consistent there. Jacksn, has been a colossal flop every year in the FRBI league.
