I'm putting together a ROM for baseball's best rivalries. So far, I think I'm going to use these teams:
Yankees/Red Sox
Cardinals/Cubs
Mets/Braves
Giants/Dodgers
Suggestions for the last two teams?
I'm working real hard on my version :P

You definitely hit all the big rivalries. Maybe Whitesox/Tigers, Oakland/Seattle....???

Yeah, I couldn't really think of any other big rivalries. I've tossed around the idea of adding the Brooklyn Dodgers to the mix, but I kind of like the idea of all-time rosters, and Brooklyn would be all guys from the past.
I kind of like the idea of the White Sox and Oakland, just for the cross-town rivalry of Cubs/White Sox and A's/Giants.
I think cubs/Sox is a good call. However, I wouldn't break up the Dodgers/Giants.... this is one of the all time greats.
I remember the year when the Giants won 100 games and got knocked out of the playoffs on the last game of the season, when the shitty dodgers smashed them (like 11-2 or something).

No doubt about it. I meant simply adding White Sox and Oakland as the last two teams, so that there would be Dodgers vs. Giants, and also the possiblity of Giants vs A's. Likewise, you'd have Cubs vs. Cards, and Cubs vs. ChiSox.
Oh,... right. I am a moron. Good idea!
Sox and Oakland are very good ideas....

For Oakland, you could almost fill a roster just from their late 80s' teams.
For the Sox you could go Frank Thomas all the way back to Joe Jackson.
DId the Philadelphia Athletics become the Oakland Athletics or did they become the Phillies?
The Philadelphia A's became the Kansas City A's, then became the Oakland A's.
The Phillies started out as the Quakers or something.
Then Oakland should have a nice selection of players to work with...
Actually, the Phillies went from the Quakers, to Blue Jays, to Phillies.

Yeah, I don't expect any problems with choosing players from A's or White Sox. Like Stock said, the 80's alone would provide a good team for Oakland.
Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably start coming up with rosters tonight.
Question for Cardinals fans: who would you rate as the best all around 2nd baseman and catcher from the past 25 years? Preferably, this player would have played for the team a minimum of 3 years, and the reason for choosing this player must be based on stats as a Cardinal.
I was going to say Rogers Hornsby, then I learned to read. The Cards have a long history of light hitting guys at second, so I'd have to go with Hjose Oqundo. He's the only one that lasted, he was a decent player, and he's the only one I really associate with the Cardinals. Vina just didn't last long enough, and everyone else was pretty mediocre.
Catcher's are all about defense as well. Pagnozzi couldn't hit at all, but was there for his whole career. Matheny had a better bat and is a great catcher. Marrerro got cancer and was a utility man, so he's out. I really don't know who I'd choose; I hated Pagnozzi, but Matheny was only there for 5 years.
Thanks for the input. I think i'm either going with Oquendo or Tom Herr, since he got pretty steady playing time in the early-mid 80's (he had a good year in '85 too). And I originally had planned on Pagnozzi, but think I might switch it to Matheny. Thanks.
Oops, I forgot to mention Herr. For some reason I've got it in my head that he played 3rd, I guess it's some messed up connection I made when I was a kid that barely understood baseball.

ask tim mccarver about the best catcher!
my card catcher would be darrell porter
2b would be herr
It's appropriate that a Cubs fan would pick a guy like Porter. The guy only showed up in the postseason when he was with St. Louis, and his "best" years were in the AL.
Tony Pena was better than Matheny for certain.

He was a hell of a catcher. I considered Pena mainly because of his RBI status, but he was only with the Cardinals for a few years. I felt it was unfair to other guys who've been there longer like Pagnozzi. But then again, i've so far gone out of my way in a few cases to retain RBIers...
How about centerfield, Cubs? (1980-2004)
Corey Patterson? Yes, No, Other?
While Pena had a good career, he didn't work out well for the Cardinals. We didn't get to see the stuff that made him a highly paid catcher. Also, getting rid of Van Slyke was the beginning of the end for the Cardinals. After '87, everything went downhill, culminating in trading Willie while he was leading the league in batting, getting nothing in return. Cardinals fans don't want to remember that era (which is another reason I'd let Pags off the roster).
Oh wow--you ever have somebody mention such a random thing and then realize you had a dream about it? I drempt last night that Willie McGee died and I wondered if people would believe it when somebody posted in on the board--you know, because of all of those "X found dead in his apt" posts.
Pena? Pagnozzi? Let's not forget Clark Kent (aka Darrel Porter)!

Where do you have Billy Williams?
You may want to go with OFs instead of LF/RF/CF
Dawson, Williams, Sosa, Hack Wilson (all time RBI record for a season)

He won some post season bling bling as well.
Porter's still a possibilty. I was trying to select players with longer tenure. Porter spent 4 seasons as a Cardinal, while Pagnozzi had spent a few more.

I'm only using players from the past 25 years, so i've left out Williams and Wilson. I was looking over the team pages for the Archade version, and noticed the teams I chose for my ROM were the same, with only a few exceptions. I figured I would simply end up with a variation of the Arcade ROM, and wanted it to be a little more unique. 1980's and up was my solution.
You're right, I don't really have to choose by LF/CF/RF, and I think i've already broken that rule with a few of the teams...
Off the top of my head the cubs CFers have been
Rick Monday (I think)
Bob Dernier
Dave Martinez
Jerome Walton
Doug Dascenzo (ML record for consecutive erroless games in the OF)
Tuffy Rhodes
Brian McRae
Lance Johnson
Corey Patterson
So who is the Cubs' catcher? Jody Davis or 1993 Rick Wilkens?
I decided to go with Patterson. Thanks, Ryno. The catcher is Jody Davis.
.303 and 30 homers was Wilkens from 93. . . . .not too shabby. . . .maybe a back up spot???
For the helluvit. My post '80 all time cub team
1b Grace
2b Paul Noce. . . . umm, Sandberg
3b A Ramirez
SS Dunston
OF Sosa
OF C Patt
OF Dawson
C Davis
sub Durham
sub Gary Matthews
sub Moreland
sub Cey
SP Sutcliffe
SP Maddux
RP RandyMyes
RP Lee Smith
That's pretty much exactly who I picked. The only differences - I have Kerry Wood in place of Maddux, because Maddux is on my Braves team. I had trouble finding relievers other than Lee Smith, so I gave up and put in Rod Beck. But now that you mention Randy Myers, he's getting the spot without question. He's perfect for the job. Very good call.

I might go with Prior over Wood just because of the 18-6 2003 record.
Tapani had some decent years as well, including a 19 win season in 1998. Scott Sanderson pitched well for the cubs from 84 - 89, usually getting double digits in wins each year.
Hell, i've broken the rules here and there. Wood removed, Fergie Fucking Jenkins added. He was a Cub in 82-83, but i'll give him 60's abilities and ERA.
