Title: Licensed and Unlicensed ROMs
Post by: Gantry on 05/18/03, 11:52:18 PM
OK,  I have discovered a major issue with the ROMs I have on my site and therefore been editing.  I have two ROMs on my site - RBI Licensed and RBI Unlicensed.  When you unzip them the Licensed (RBI Baseball.zip) is 196,924 bytes while the Unlicensed is 262,160 bytes....

Pretty much all the work I've ever done has been on that unlicensed ROM.  This ROM also opens up in RBI Manager, while the licensed does not.  Now the problem is that the opening screen on that Unlicensed ROM (rbi1.nes) showed the "Licensed by Nintendo of America" or whatever.  This means the unilcensed ROM on my site is not the unlicensed ROM...

My questions:

1)  What ROMs have you been editing and what are the file sizes?
2)  Where did you get said ROMs?

I'm not even sure which ROms I have been playing with now...

I had no idea myself.  This looks weird.  vimm.net has both versions for download, and upon opening the real unlicensed rom in a tile editor, I saw that the tile layout was significantly different.  No tiles for super sprint, and the rom size is 96k or something.

I'll have to tinker with it to find any other changes.

Both my ROMs have super sprint tile data at the bottom.  And the "unlicensed" ROM that I have (which is also used in RBI2k3) has a complete duplicate of some data.  There are two sets of player data, one at 00000 and one at 10000

I'm going to check those ROMs out on vimm

These ROMs look much cleaner than the ones one my site.  The vimm.net ROMS:

Both of them are 98,448 bytes from what I see.  The unlicensed ROM does not have the "Licensed by" data on the title screen.  Both ROMs look like they have the same tiles in the same places...

So these ROMs are half the size and contain no tiles from Super Sprint.  Now I need to check the ROM data and see if they ahve duplicate player data like the ones on my site.  I'm guessing no, but that also means they will probably not work with nightwulf's editor or RBI Manager...

Too tired to do anything else today, so I'll save it for tomorrow...

In the interest of minimizing download times, I switched to the licensed version from dee-nee, as it was smaller than the ROM I was using. I'll definitely need to switch to the ROM at vimm tho ...

Argh!
Maybe it's just something on my computer, but I want to check this before things get derailed later.  The roms from vimm.net work just fine in emulation, but I cannot edit them.  I don't mean throught the RBI editor, I mean any program whether a hex or tile editor- the roms can't be altered.  It won't save changes, any changes no mater how big or small.  Actually I've noticed this with a lot of roms and it's almost as if the only roms I can edit have come from this site.

Does anyone know what gives?

Perhaps they default the ROMs to read-only in Windows?  Right-click the ROM and go to Properties.  See if Readonly is checked off....

I don't know how they can prevent you from editing raw data in a file, so it has to be an easy workaround...
