Title: Saberhagen
Post by: Mike Doherty on 06/11/03, 03:34:03 PM
I've always thought Bret Saberhagen was one ofthe single greatest pitchers in RBI baseball.  Thoughts?

I don't hear Saberhagen's name mentioned too much with the great pitcher, what do you curve guys think?  Is he better than Jimmy Key at least?

He's got a good curve, but I like Fernando's curve better.

Sabes is NASTY against righties but vulnerable to lefties.

Saberhagen is utterly unhittable for at least 3 innings every time he takes the hill.  Jimmy Key is nasty as well.  I think the sidearmers have a distinct advantage when using curves.

i agree that sabes is naaaasty on the hill, but do not underestimate at the plate.  i hit a pitcher walzie with him.  great for bloops as well...

Definitely the best sidehander.  'Always thought Jesse Orosco was pretty decent at times too.

orosco gets my vote for my favorite game pitcher as is evidenced by my many references to him and my many attempts to pitch a complete game with him and give up less that 30 runs.  my reasons are as follows.
1. his name is (uncle) jesse orosco - which makes boss hogg his nemesis and i would like someone to edit a rom and only change todd worrell to boss hogg and leave everything else alone.
2. he throws insane gas for about 11 pitches and then is totally cashed
3. he was approximately 43 years old when rbi was made and today HE IS STILL IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES
these reasons alone make him a unanimous rbi/real world hall of famer in my book
I rest my case.

So true!!!  Jesse's like 70 years old and still gets 10 wins a year!  I like using him over RMac to close with my favorite team the Mets, Jesse's more funky, RMac's fastball only tops off at 92 mph, although RMac's screwball is pretty decent.

sabes is  a master in the early innings...especially in curve...hes got good action and great speed changes.....however, the second he slows down, you might as well put it up on a tee.....cause its gonna get clocked....

all i see when i see jesse orosco's name is him celebrating like an old lady on the price is right when they clinched game 7 in 86....but im not bitter or anything....

The reason that Sabes tires more than most pitchers is not his stanima, it's the fact that he's so hard to hit.  Because of this he throws a lot of pitches to each batter.  If I were using him I'd try to pitch as many strikes as possible, and keep my fastball/blooge (sinker) pitches to a minimum.
