Hey Gantry,
Can we maybe get a list of players who have not yet made the wall of shame, so we can try and dig up some dirt on them?
Ray Knight:
September 7, 1984: Dwight Gooden pitches a one-hitter and strikes out 11 in a 10–0 rout of the Cubs. The only hit is Keith Moreland's slow roller in the 5th inning, which 3B Ray Knight fields but can't get out of his glove.
July 22, 1986: The Mets win a crazy five-hour marathon with the Reds in 14 innings, winning 6–3 ... In the Reds 10th, pinch-runner Eric Davis steals 2B and 3B, bumping into Ray Knight. Knight decks Davis and both benches empty. Knight, Davis, Kevin Mitchell and Mario Soto are ejected. Gary Carter moves to 3B, McDowell comes in to pitch, and Orosco moves from the mound to RF. With two out and a runner on 2B in the 11th, Orosco returns to pitch, McDowell moves to LF, and Mookie Wilson shifts to right...McDowell returns to pitch in the 13th and gets Tony Perez to fly to Orosco in right. Howard Johnson belts a three-run homer in the 14th and McDowell retires the side in order.
"I watched this game." -- Mike
Kruk
-----
One of his most memorable quotes, and a fine example for his broad popularity, came in response to an older woman who chastised him for smoking and drinking as a professional athlete: "I ain't an athlete, lady," he replied. "I'm a baseball player."
One of the more imaginative catcalls came from the Wrigley faithful, who infamously chanted "Fee fi fo fum, John Kruk is a big fat bum."
1993 All Star game - Randy Johnson fires a pitch behind Kruk. Kruk puts his hand over his heart mimicking his heart beat. He then bails out on the rest of the pitches striking out.
I'd keep my eyes open for Jim Rice stories. He always seemed unstable to me. I did see a Sox game at Yankee stadium where some fan stole his hat on a foul ball and he chased the guy into the stands.
From Baseball Library.com
July 21, 1988: Red Sox veteran Jim Rice is suspended for three games by the club for shoving manager Joe Morgan. Rice was angered when Morgan replaced him with pinch hitter Spike Owen in the 8th inning of Boston's eventual 9–7 win over Minnesota.
I'd push my manager if he took me out for Spike Owen.
Some good ones there, I'll add Rice and Kruk...
As far as who needs to be Hall of Shamed, click here for the page (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/hallofshame.shtml) and see. I count about 30 people in the Hall of Shame right now, with 160 players in RBI. We have a lot of work to do...
If you guys need a starting point, lets get all of the Mets in there. We need:
Gary Carter
Wally Backman
Rafael Santana
Mookie Wilson
Bobby Ojeda
Roger McDowell
HoJo
Lee Mazilli
Danny Heep
I'm sure McDowell has done something stupid...
I don't know if this is Hall of Shame worthy, but its certainly a dubious distinction for Danny Heep:
Nolan Ryan becomes first player to record 4,000 strikeouts in a career when he fans Danny Heep on July 11 at the Astrodome..
To get every player on the list, we'll probably end up having to use a few minor shame moments like this one.
Absolutely, we can put them in and replace/add later if we find better ones...
I thought Ojeda was on there for cutting his finger off & the boat incident with the Indians.
Mike
Roger McDowell was known for his pranks, namely giving hot foots, bubblegum on the hat kind of stuff. Unfortunately the pranks earned him a trade from the Mets to the Phillies, because he kept picking on Jeffries, who was suppose to be the franchise. Also with the Dodgers, he was known to give the whole team earrings, because Marge Schott said only sissies wear earrings.
I'm sorry, it was Orosco not Ojeda.... Bobby is in there for the finger and boat incidents...
PS - I sent you email regarding rbicentral
Tom Brookens in Baseball Library.com.
A mediocre fielder, he led the AL in errors at 3B in 1980 and 1985, and tied an AL 3B record on September 6, 1980 with four errors in an inning.
I knew that's why the Tigers are so bad in the field.
Baseball Library.com has a lot of stuff.
» August 7, 1992: Boston slugger Jack Clark files for bankruptcy, listing debts of $11,459,305.97 and assets of $4,781,780. Clark is in the middle of a 3-year contract worth $8.7 million. Among other things, Clark owns 18 automobiles.
Awesome work vgp, I'll have to check out the site. I remember the Jack Clark bankrupcy thing, with all those expensive cars he bought...
Kruk, Rice, Clark, Brookens and Heep have been added to the page...
Also added this choice tidbit on my man Harry Spilman:
* Immediately after stealing the only base of his career in 1987, Giants manager Roger Craig subs Spilman for a pinch-runner. Doh!
This seems perfect for All Star Al Pedrique
After ten seasons in the minors, Pedrique was traded to the Pirates in mid-1987 and hit .301 the rest of the way as Pittsburgh's primary shortstop. But the 6' 155-lb Venezuelan dropped off to .180 in 1988 and was sent down.
Games Average HR RBI
Career 174 .247 1 36
May 13, 1991: During a intentional walk, Gary Pettis of the Tigers is picked off 3B by the Rangers. Texas wins, 8–1.
I don't know if it's hall-worthy, but it's pretty funny.
That's definitely hall of shame worthy...
What about when Rocket Roger was tossed out of that '90 ALCS game vs Oakland for bitching about the strike zone? I remember that game, too!
Glenn Davis: Pie Thief
From Wiki:
It was revealed by former teammate Charlie Kerfeld on The J.D. and Dave's Excellent Offseason Adventure radio show in Houston on Feb. 18, 2009 that Davis used to steal and eat Nolan Ryan's fried pies from the Astros locker room. Kerfeld said that Davis would do this, "because he was cheap."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Davis_(baseball)
Fried pies?
Fried pies
from mcdonalds?
No
like those jj's from the convenience store?
i think those things weigh about a pound, and half of it is fat.
That might explain why he was out of baseball at age 33. Poor nutrition.
Of course, the pies were meant for Nolan and he played to 46. Hmmm.
I'm tired of Calvin Shiraldi being on the list twice. I think it's time to remove his second entry.
Check that --- it's Calvin's buddy Calvin Shraldi.
Don't know if this has ever been brought up before, but just stumbled across this gem from Jack Clark...
"I have two goals. The first is to play in the World Series and the second is to hit .400. And I think I'll do both - someday." - Jack Clark
At least he did play in the World Series. His penance must have been getting beat by the Royals in '85 and Twins in '87...oh...and probably that he only managed one full season of hitting over .300.
Let us not forget the fact that he also looks like a big fat lesbian.
