Title: RBI Database tips
Post by: Gantry on 05/17/05, 09:06:05 AM
I thought I would list a few Wiki tips since we have a bunch of people working on the RBI Database.  Feel free to add your own or ask questions, I'm going to put all this work eventually into a "Wiki Tips" page on the Database.

Alt keys - There are quite a few uses for the "Alt" key combinations in Wiki.  Like the forums, you can use Alt-s to submit your page and Alt-p to preview it.  Many of the pages can be reached with Alt keys as well - Alt-m takes you to the Main (home) page and Alt-r takes you to the Recent Changes page.  Most of the tabs at the top of an article support the alt key - Alt-e takes you to the edit page, alt-w lets you watch a page, alt-h takes you to the history and so on.

Bullets and numbers - Use the asterix "*" at the beginning of a line to do bullets, and use "#" to do a numbered list.

Spacing and tabs - If you use two blank lines between paragraphs, it will show up with a blank line on the article.  If you use zero or one blank lines between paragraphs, they will show up on the next line.  Using the colon at the beginning of a line gives you a tab, this is most handy on the talk pages.  If someone asks you somthing on a talk page, use ":" to indent your reply right under his.  Likewise "::" will tab twice.

Signing your name - Using four tildes ~~~~ at the end of whatever you are editing will substitute your name and the current time on the page.  This should be used on the talk pages mostly.  Some folks are using it at the end of articles, which is fine but not really necessary.  Remember the history pages show exactly what you did on a page, so there's little need to put your name on the article itself.

Am I missing any?  You have any questions with editing?

Use the following tag [Image:NAME.jpg] or whatever.  Remember that you have to upload pics to the database first before using.  Once you uploaded, you have to use that same name in your [Image:xxx] tag.  You can't do the link to someone's else technique like on the forums.  Give it a whirl and let me know where you are getting caught...

Three tildes ~~~ give you just the name, no date/time.  I discovered this by fluke.

12 drummers drumming...

To make a link to another Dee-Nee Wiki page, but have it say a different thing, put in this:

[[XYZ|ABC]]

XYZ is the term to link to, ABC is the link text.

Paid the rent with that and giving drum lessons.

However, at gigs, if professional means too drunk to stand up, then yes, that too.
