Title: New Rom - 1970s
Post by: MarquisEXB on 06/18/03, 02:15:57 AM
OK here you go, the best teams of the 1970s. Featuring:

70BAL
73OAK
73NYM
75BOS
76CIN
76KC
77LAD
77NYA
77PHI
79PIT

Were the Big Red Machine the best of the 70s? I'm sure 3 time champs Oakland has something to say about it. Don't sleep on the "We Are Family" Pirates. Can anyone repeat Reggie's 3 straight homers on 3 straight pitches? Philly & KC couldn't get over the hump to make it to the W.S. in the 70s (they had to wait until 1980), but maybe you can change history by one year. Can Tom Terrific and Koosman carry a poor hitting Mets?

WARNING: Playing the teams of the 70s will make those Led Zeppelin songs sound up-to-date.

ENJOY!
Mike

You guys are pumping out the ROMs!  I think I'm really going to like this one, kudos Mike.  Did a quick fireup and watched an inning.   Everything looks good except maybe the Icon for the Mets.  I know you don't have much room to work with, but it looks like Nyn - obviously this is a very small matter, more of an FYI.  I'll give it a play and put in on the page shortly...

PS - I never knew Rusty Staub actually started, he has some good #s on the 73 Mets...

Here's what's f-ed up: When Marquis posts a rom, it never lets me load into nesticle. When Gantry adds it to his "roms" section of the site, I can. What do you guys do differently?

Are you trying to opening the .zip file directly?  When Marquis posts a ziped ROM, he added a text file and picture to the zip.  I'll post the same ROM without the pic and text, let me know how it treats you:

Thanks--now it works. What did I do?

Are you unzipping the file or just playing the .zip?  Nesticle probably has an issue if there is more than one file in a zipped ROM...

Gantry,

I couldn't figure out how else to distinguish between the Yankees and Mets. I'm all up for suggestions on this one.

As for Staub being good on the 1973 Mets, well he wasn't that good. The Mets hitting was so bad that year I had to do a "Reggie" and give him stats from an earlier year. Actually I had to do that for 4 Mets players, including Willie Mays on the bench. If not they might have given Houston on the original a run for their money in suckiness.

I still think they're the worst team on the rom, but I made Seaver so diesel that curveballers should have a chance with them.

Other notes:
Philly turned out really powerful. I had to smurf them a little for competetive reasons. I still think they're a little better than the rest.

The Dodgers turned out to have pretty good hitting. I've never thought of LA as a good hitting team.

Meanwhile Oakland was not a very powerful team, despite Mr. October. Actually they have 3 very good power hitters, and one decent one on the bench. To balance their team out, they do have two very fast players at the top of the lineup. So think STL., but with 3/4 good power hitters.

Boston's best hitter is not Yaz. They had enough power hitting, so I didn't give him a "Reggie", even though '75 was an off year for him.

You're right, it's a tough call.  BTW - I don't have my NES graphics down quite yet, is what you edit for the team icons called a tile?  How many pixels do you have to work with?  I'll screw around and see if I can accomplish anything.  It'll be good learning no matter what...

Looking at Staub's #s, I see you gave him his 1971 stats.  Was this intentional to give NYM a fair shot?   Or did you do the 71 Mets and make a typo on the initial post?

OK, I whipped up Tile Layer Pro and changed all the Mets tiles to include a fuller "m" - one thing I noticed is that the m had to use the final column on the 2nd tile, but it didn't affect anything.  Some weirdness though, because Nya shows up on the ending Newspaper for some reason.  I'm wondering if that's something I did or one the ending tiles got reversed...

Also noticed you still have the original NES team names in the newspaper.  Did you get that thread I pointed you to for changing that?  You might even want to try using nightwulf's editor for that one...

Hope you're not taking these the wrong way - you make great ROMs and I can tell you pay good attention to detail.  Just helping out...

edit - Oh yeah, the ROM is uploaded

Marquis and Gantry,

Make the Mets NJ for (new jersey) and the yanks NY....just a thought.

I could have sworn I changed the newpaper names for the teams. I used Nightwulf's editor for it. However since I did something weird with the team names on the intro screen, his editor won't work with it anymore. (I changed the size they would be - that's why).

I will have to try again. In any case I've changed the NYs in all the spots.

Mets icons look good everywhere, including the newspaper. Good job!

Hey Ross if you're still around, and you're the same Ross that did the 80s roms, I'd like to talk to you. Send me an email or AIM me.
