Just curious as to what the Dee-Nee world thinks.  I am excited about this tourney, and I am not even in it.

OK votes in, I voted for the obvious 4 (smoked, Joe, Riley. Foster), though I truly believe only 3 of them will make the final 4 and there will be 1 "suprise" (GDavis or one of the unknowns)

I voted for the obvious ones as well but also threw in a vote for GDavis.

Apparently, there are two supreme idiots in the dee nee worl...because they voted for me.

I see this as a major disadvantage--well, moreso because I'm in charge of running the entire tourney...

I think this is true, that's the main reason I have your odds lower than others, I saw how much crap Beales had to go trough with the tourney, and I'm pretty sure it effected his play, maybe you'll be able to overcome it, but I think it is a disadvantage.

I voted for Dirt, Riley (based on Dirt's mentions), GDavis and Riley (again, based on Dirt's mentions)

And yeah, I feel bad for Joe, it's gotta be tough to be overseeing an entire tourney while trying to compete in it

Winning, based on the current votes.  Some of the lines seem pretty conservative due to low credibility.

Lower, as in a bigger favorite?  To be a +100 out of 16 entries is a pretty heavy favorite as is.

Like I said, numbers are conservative (for the house), because of low credibility.  Assuming, the current votes would all indicate a real bet of equal value to place (@ 1/6 odds) + a normal 10% profit on all losing bets.
As more votes come in, credibility will get higher, and the odds should get better.

Your odds a break even should add up to 100%, normal odds for stuff like this probably addup to 150%-200% for the profit (depending on the event, sometimes less than 150%)

Your odds add to 515%

AGAIN, 74 VOTES FOR "PLACING" IS NOWHERE NEAR CREDIBLE.  ALSO, Those with 0 votes would technically have a payout of infinity (obviously had to cap this).  If you need to make yourself feel better, then just double all the plusses.  Not like I am actually open for trade here and trying to fuck over the dee-nee'ers.  If we get 100 or so votes, the odds will make much more sense.

Do we get to split the million dollars amongst us, then?

By the way, those opening lines are way, way screwed up. Vegas would never use a money line for something like this, they would use odds (4/1, 6/1, 2/5, 20/1, etc.).

Translate it as you wish.  I use the "+/-" system since it is what I see most common in events that are not based on point spreads (ie. win/lose only).  Plus, it is easier to do the math on the payout.
"4:1" = "-400" = 1.25 payout (or something like that).
Title: Re: Winner of Columbus RBI Tourney??
Post by: fightonusc on 05/31/05, 02:16:59 PM
Huh?

4/1 = you win 4 dollars for every dollar you bet. (If I place a $10 bet on a team getting 4/1 odds to win the World Series and they do, I get $50 total back - $40 in winnings plus my original $10 bet)

-400 on the money line = I have to bet $400 to make $100. (If I place the same $10 bet on a team that's -400 on the money line and they win, I get a total of $12.50 back - $2.50 in winnings plus my original $10 back)

Actually, it's +400 that's equal to 4/1 odds, and neither of those are close to a 1.25 payout (it's a 4.00 payout)...

1-4 = -400 = 1.25 payout, he was just confused by 4-1 vs. 1-4

Read my last post:

My point was, you can display lines SEVERAL different ways.

For example, when I was in Vegas, The odds for Vanderlei Silva to win the Pride FC Grand Prix tournament were "+275" at the MGM Grand.  They were "3.75" at NY, NY.  In the end, these are both the same.  If I bet $100 and win, I will get $375 back when I cash in my ticket.
There is no right or wrong way to display the odds/payouts, as long as you know how much money you are getting back on a certain bet.
Since I do 95% of my gambling on online sites, I have never seen odds given such as x/y.  For odds such as tourneys or odds "to win only", I have only seen the "+/-" methodology, so that is what I am most familiar with.
Title: Re: Winner of Columbus RBI Tourney??
Post by: fightonusc on 05/31/05, 02:32:04 PM
Yeah, they use the money line mainly for boxing and baseball single-game betting. For most prop bets, they would use the horse racing style odds system of X/Y. The best example would be for betting on a NASCAR race. You might get different odds on 20 to 25 different drivers (maybe Jeff Gordon at 4/1, Rusty Wallace at 12/1, Joe Nemechek at 50/1, etc.) and "The Field" (all players not listed) lumped together as one bet (one player from "The Field" wins and that bet wins). That's something you also see in golf betting, as well as any futures betting on team sports (preseason betting on who will win the World Series, Super Bowl, NCAA Championships, etc.).

Since you've only really concerned yourself with boxing/MMA, it makes sense that money line betting is more familliar to you.

Honestly, have only seen odds like that in horse racing.  I just went and looked at 5 different online betting sites and did not have odds listed like "x/y" in any futures betting (ie. world series winner, 2006 NCAA Basketball Champion, Super Bowl winner, NFL MVP, 2006 Rose Bowl Champion, Next President, etc...).  Also, at the MGM grand, all their odds were in the "+/-".  It must just come down to who you get your lines from.

I normally go to these:

www.mvpsportsbook.com
www.sportsinteraction.com
www.thegreek.com
www.sportsline.com
www.betoddessa.com

Many times, sportsinteraction just lists what the payout is (ie.  1.75).  The number you would multiply your bet by to tell you what you would collect on a winning bet.

Also, do you see any lines that look relatively out of wack?
I would like to give more weight to votes from people who actually know something about these guys' game play.  There are probably some people who have voted that have no clue who is really good.

Yeah, they are two of the four "unknowns" of the tournament.  The other two are Josh Payne and Trevor Martin.  My opinion is that they should have better odds than those who are "known" to not be competitive at ATG, based on the fact that these people are travelling across the country to enter a tourney full of strangers.  I just have a hard time believing that they won't be very good...

That's the beauty of real sportsbook gambling.  The better team does not necessarily have the lower line.  The lines follow the money (or in this case the votes).

This reminds me of a UFC event almost 2 years ago where Tank Abbot fought Kimo.  The odds were -115 on both fighters.  This was ridiculous that the odds were even.  There is no way in hell Kimo could have lost that fight.  I put the maximum bet of $500 down on sportsinteraction, and Kimo won in less that 2 minutes in the 1st round.

If you factor in credibility, you are absolutely correct.  If credibility is ignored, then 1 "bet" could significantly affect the odds on a sample size this small.

That would be cool.  How would we fill in brackets for something like this though.  Aren't there loser/winner brackets and whatnot?

Otherwise, FOR FUN, I would be willing to take small bets on my lines.  (Max $45 dollar payout).  Not willing to get raped; just thinking like 1-2 dollar bets.
Would also take fake bets, in case you would like to see how well you would do.  Just PM me. Edit (or post them)

That fight was sad...Tank didn't get a single hit in.

Sad indeed.  Kimo was able to bicep choke him while in Tanks guard.  That should never happen.  However, anyone that follows the sport knew tank had no chance in hell.

I would put like $5 on Smoked, $5 on Wiggum and $1 on DXXPAC321, but let's just say fake money since I see no real need to be sending $15 checks for bets on an RBI tourney.

First I will need your social security number, bank account numbers, home address, mother's maiden name and your credit card number with the highest credit line (don't forget to include the 3 digit verification number on the back); then we can get started.
Or you can just post it HERE what you want.

I got 500 bucks (what's the max?) on Beales making it out of the first round...If there are any team props, I'd also like to bet the over on 26+ hits/runs/errors, and a slaughter in game two, both these bets will also be 500 bucks
