Forums have been running very slow for past 45 minutes, it took 5 minutes for me to get to news and to get to new topic, we'll see how long it takes for post to actually process.
it's happened a couple of afternoons this week
I think it means Gantry hates us
And the online servers appear to be down...at least they were about half an hour ago.

Dee-Nee running a little slow for the past hour
I concur.
Just got to the office, our Internet connection is hella slow. Not sure why, but don't really have time to test. So you'll have to live with it today, my apologies....
You'll have to excuse my friend...he's a little slow
Worst day of work ever and the forums are running like they were carrying the old fat ryno.
Yeah, having issues with our internet lately, especially in the last month or so. Our Internet Provider is doing some tests as we speak, but apparently we are saturating our T1 line and have been for awhile. Hopefully it's just a jackass with spyware or a virus, but I'll know more later today...
get'em, Gantry
He had no good news, which amazingly may mean that during peak business hours we might actually be saturating our T1 lines. I still refuse to believe it, but it's possible...

Does your slowness in updating the max version on the Firefox extension count?

What happens if I install this thing?
the wonder of all wonders
It will make your computer lock up at random times and cause your siblings to develop scurvy.
It will also allow you to access the Dee-Nee main page, any of the forum boards, the RBI Database, and the RBI editor through a convenient right-click menu.
Gantry, you're awesome.
Beef - you think I should redesign to allow Anything Goes & the RBI board via the first menu instead of a submenu? Or am I overthinking?
I'm fine with it the way it is - generally, if I'm only going back to the board level from reading a thread, I just use the back button anyway (especially if I'm on page two of the board). It would be useful, I guess, for multi-page threads. The design seems cleaner the way it is, so I don't think it's completely necessary.
TBT is kinda slow--does that need to be reported?

Whenever I have to run in one of my dreams, I'm always terribly slow. Not that I'm fast in real life, but in my dreams, I'm super slow. Like I have Scooby-Doo feet or something.

I hate that. I'm usually back playing football but its like I'm running in quick sand.
preliminary research on the interweb suggests that it is a kind of REM sleep paralysis that your body/mind goes into to keep you from hurting yourself in your sleep.
so i guess your brain just doesn't want you to pull an imaginary hammie
It usually happens to me as I'm running from someone/thing trying to kill me, or I'm chasing down someone. Also, if I have a gun, it will malfunction, then change into a pellet gun, which will then shoot about 2 feet, and then the gun usually just disappears.
dee-nee is being a little bitch today. occasionaly when going between pages or responding to posts, I am getting the "page not found" message on my screen.
Really slow this morning
I threw my computer out of my 22nd floor office window this morning when i couldn't get on.
seems to be working fine with my new computer.
Our internet provider was spotty then went out. Life is back to normal, thank god...
Maybe you should get a new provider. They're fucking up everyone's fuck off time
I actually had to do work this morning
Yes we went down again at the exact same fucking time, unbelievable. This time it was a line problem with the T1, all AT&Ts fault. Worst... timing... ever...
We've had more outages in the last 2 months than the previous 6 years combined, continue your day. I am going to shoot myself now...
How about you fire AT&T?

We have a gnome in the database server.
Which brings me to my next post ...
The "monday evening slowness" thing happened again, this time I planned to be at the server so I can figure out what is going on. Basically something is running a database check/scan on the message table, which is HUGE and pretty much slows everything to a crawl until it is finished. Time to see what the SMF admin is doing, maybe it's something in there...
And I purposely stopped the website and ethernet connection to make sure nothing from the outside was causing the slowdown, my apologies. But hopefully I can get it fixed now...

Admin -> Server Settings -> Feature Configuration -> "Optimize tables every how many days?"
Maybe? Not sure when it's running, since it doesn't allow you to specify a time/date.

That's gotta be it, disabling for now...
From the SMF forums:
"Really with a largeish forum you should disable the automatic optimization of tables and do it manually when there is low traffic."
I'd say a 125MB messages file counts as "largeish" - kind of silly how it doesn't allow you to specify a time. I could be brave and set the clock back to see what happens but I'm content just assuming this fixed it...
And once again, the mainstream media completely ignores this story.
duz teh innernets hav teh hairbal?

can we nominate truffles for dee-nee'er of the century. every post is golden.
btw truffles, PM me your number. id like to wack it while you purr on the other end.
My feeling is that we've been running slower than normal the last couple days. It was worse yesterday afternoon, but still slower than normal now.
pretty slow right now
I love you.
the "jump to" at the bottom right of my page isnt working. folders in the upper left link good, but i am having no luck in the jump to
Working fine here. Browser? Error message?
now its working fine with internet explorer. safari has been all fucked for me lately
i couldn't get into dee-nee for the last almost 1.5 hours...
slow all weekend and still now
It's quite strange that it was slow over the weekend, because the traffic from customers would be non-existent. I have just about all the hardware for the new server, so we'll be upgrading to a new server relatively soon...
Please tell me you didn't forget a new flux capacitor.
I did - though I couldn't get the jigawatts I wanted, but it'll do short term...
I got the new server up and running a few minutes ago, then I realized that I installed the 32-bit version of CentOS. Figured with my high class $28 64-bit processor, I should go that route. Especially since I won't be installing a GUI, which involves a majority of the software that gives 64-bit software trouble. So I'm bittorrenting that now and should be able to install after work tomorrow...
Once I get the wikis moved over, I'm seriously considering setting up some sort of shared access system where people can make "blogs" and update the front page of the site. Anyone here work with a CMS like Drupal or Wordpress? I figure if I can get guys like fighton, TBG, Beefmaster etc an account to make RBI updates we might be able to resurrect the dying front page.
People's thoughts on this? I think a vibrant front page setup will attract new users and get folks more acclimated and coming back to the site. When you rely on just me to update the front page (shit, I don't even have Columbus or Chicago tourney updates yet!), answer emails etc and with the forums a bit of a tough barrier of entry to newbies I think this is the kickstart we need...
Am I crazy? Does nobody care? Can we keep the RBI Legacy going or are we dooming ourselves to a little forum cult?
Here's a pic of Dee-Nee 2.0, in all it's low cost glory...
Is Gantry actually John Titor?
the case for the new server should somehow be in the shape of the rbi guy
Somebody break out the Dremel and send it to me...
Seriously, $28 for a 64-bit boxed processor. That's just lunacy people! We're gonna start at 1GB of RAM and if we do any upgrades that'll be first in line. RAM is a usable part here (we have so many spare HDs and power supplies that they won't be missed) and I didn't want to swipe too much. I really should have spent $20 and got a motherboard with more RAM slots and SATA ports, but this baby will smoke regardless...
I like the front page idea, Gantry. Are you thinking of a full-on blog with daily updates or is this idea just to take the onus off your lazy ass when it comes to front page updates?
A little bit of both. Basically whenever a relevant RBI article/player tidbit comes up, basically any forum heavy hitter can update the front page. Then people can leave comments (or link to a new thread on the RBI page to comment) and we'll get people who aren't heavy forum posters checking it out on a regular basis...
The beauty of it is that making a front page update involves software that isn't much more difficult than posting on the forums - right now it's a PITA to hand-edit the page to do updates and it's only me/Lips/nightwulf who have the ability to do so...
i'm in for that. i'm not on as much throughout the day, but i'd be happy to contribute with newly acquired special access powers.
This is my fault too. Gantry and I talked about making the front page accessible to more users like a year ago. It's on my "to do" list.
Allowing us to update the page is a crazy wonderful idea.
Yeah, I'm happy to contribute. I use Dreamweaver pretty regularly, so I can do some basic Web work on that end.

I've done a decent amount with Wordpress (our corporate site runs off it, unfortunately), if you need extra help, which it doesn't sound like you do.

If we were updating the front page this would be absolutely perfect: Mike Schmidt's public service announcement against the dangers of cocaine. (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/08/06/mike-schmidt-you-dont-need-cocaine/)

The real fun will be shutting the forums down long enough to move the database between servers.

409 is a resource conflict. I'm guessing that you're at work and your internet connection is going through their internal network. 409 isn't something that our web server would return. Is there any more information on the error screen?
i will look if it happens again tomorrow

Same here. It was down for a couple hours for me.
Mike D there is a guy at my company who looks exactly like you. I almost asked him if I could take a picture of him while at a company-wide meeting yesterday (he's from other mkt), but I thought that might be a little too creepy.

Not really possible to answer without at minimum knowing something about how your company is routing traffic. Using a filter somewhere? Websense? Lots of variables.
Best option is probably to befriend the nerdiest guy in your department. Show a little cleavage and ask what he knows about your company's network.
No such luck, i have two other people in my office and IT is a phone call away, so showing cleavage to get what i want will not work in this case.
I wish it would fix, not once today would it let me post or browse freely without being kicked off. :'(
All i do all day is make phone calls to people who never actually answer the phone. Im so bored i cannot stand it, to the point im starting to dislike my job.
71 phone calls in 5 hours and out of the 71, 15 answered and out of the 15 who answered 8 hung up on me. I think im gonna get stoned now.
