Title: Does anyone else throw the ball against the wall?
Post by: DamnTheCowboys on 07/20/05, 07:36:24 PM
Me and my bros have always done this and continue to do so to this day.

After a groundout to first, we will make the first baseman runs towards second base for a split second and then chuck the ball towards first.   If you do it fast enough, the ball will hit the wall before the screen switches to the next pitcher-batter matchup.
For some reason RBI counts this as an error (programming glitch).
This serves two purposes: One, you try to see how many errors you can accumulate.   Anything around 15 is considered good.  Also, it's kind of like a spike in football.
Your shortstop makes a nice throw over to first, runner's out, and you take your first baseman, Hrbek or whoever, and spike the ball against the wall as the batter is running back to the dugout, as if you're saying "grab some pine, bitch!"
It's also a good way to end an inning.  Kind of like in real life when a first baseman catches the ball for the third out, he chucks it aside.
You get more cred if you make this play in different ways, such as a line shot to third, your third basemen makes the grab and alertly throws towards third, past third and hits the wall for the error.   It's a good stylish, showboat play.

The risk is that sometimes you forget a runner is on base and you make the error....it can cost you a run.

Am I the only one who does this?     If anyone else does it, do you guys have a term for it?

You're not the only one. I bet most of us do it at least once in a while

I don't.  Ever.  I think it's mostly a control conservation thing, though...you know, they aren't all that easy to come by these days.

I do that every time.  The Holy Grail of this throw is when you can do it with the catcher, throwing over his shoulder to the backstop.  It's a very rare and joyous event, worthy of a full beer while playing drinking rules.

its a filthy habit that i finally was able to break myself from.....if i remember right many moons ago, i forgot how many outs there were, or the fact that a guy was on 3rd base, and tossed one into the wall giving up a run  ::)

my opponent was most happy about that.

I used to do that constantly, but to keep the error's accurate I now run home and throw to first, unless it's the third out, then I simply run everyone to the dugout.

I fuck around constantly both fielding and baserunning (imagine how I was in Columbus, times 25), against most people it'll result in a cheap run or two a game, but against my friends, it results in a six hit/minimum batters for them.

I compare my style of RBI to Ty Cobb.

I almost always try to throw the ball against the wall with no runners on base or on the 3rd out.
When I played in college, we used to try to get the most errors and runs in a game.

No question, that is the Holy Grail.   I've tried it a million times and pulled it off maybe once.

Have you figured out a way to run into the stands and beat up a guy with no arms?

Never tried the catcher throw to the wall.....

The rarest feat that I have accomplished is after a 3rd out made at 1st you throw the ball to 3rd base.  With perfect timing and a prefect throw the ball will be caught and the catch sound will be made by the third baseman.  Ive only done it a few times ever.  The same can be done from 3rd to 1st also.  Sometimes you can see the throw being held by the 3rd baseman for a split second but hear no sound... that doesnt count.

Briznock, do you ever run into the "fast throw" glitch when you do this, where the game doesn't register the out at first?  I throw the ball around the horn after outs (except the third out, when I run to the dugout), and I occasionally get bit by that when I'm trying to be fast.

My friend has thrown the ball into RF with the 1B and we've seen the out not register on occasion.

My brother always does this to try and rack up as many errors as possible.

All the fucking time.  Its cost me a couple of games.

See, this is exactly why the majority here can never be professional rbi players.  The only thing that matters is winning at RBI...if you give away a few outs over several games but still get to throw the ball from first to third before the inning change other times--it just doesn't mean shit.  It also is meaningless to throw the ball against the 1st base wall--esp. if it ever causes you to give up a run (by forgetting the out situation).  Amateurs.

Damn, I really sound like an asshole in this post.  :-\

I firmly believe that my outlook on RBI is strictly a function of the fact that I grew up gambling on the game...always.  I doubt Riley and I have played 20 games for "fun."  And we've played literally, thousands of games the past 15 years.

My friends and I have thrown the ball into the wall after just about every putout since 1988.

More recently, when playing our drinking game the player with the least errors always had to drink the amount of errors they lost by at the end of the game.

I've already said but I'm gonna say it again, I like this Cowboys fucker.

Chubbs and I have been throwing souvenirs for as long as I can remember. If wer're playing drinking rules, like Baines arlready menitoned, the player iwth the fewesterrors drinkst he difference.

And yes, the catcher flip over the head is the holy grail but damn its fuciing tought osmetimes.  My borther craig goes apeshit just attempting it.  funny shit.

I, too, cannot resist.  I throw it against the wall every time.  Well, not always against the wall, but always towards it, at least.  But, I never knew until now that it counted as an error.  And knowing is half the battle.
