Title: I feel sorry for you guys
Post by: GAGNE on 08/23/05, 11:53:04 PM
These "guys" im speaking of are those poor slobs who are paying 300 dollars for a system and 50 bucks per game to waste there lives away playing video games that absolutely suck.  I mean honestly, someone out there name a video game better than rbi baseball, tecmo bowl, or mario.... its impossible.  It just pisses me off when i walk around my dorm hallway and all these weiners are playing playstation and whatever other crap is out there.  Without nintendo, you might as well hand youself by you testicles. Lemme hear your thoughts.

Couldn't agree more.  Friends at work are always talking about their PS2 and XBox.  I throw out the whole NES thing and they look at me like I have three heads.

i think there's an age cutoff where they just can't appreciate RBI. a few friends came over for their first RBI experience and they were asking what button dives/jumps and such. i proceded to win the game in 4 minutes. i actually set a new record (3) a couple nights later against a quality opponent.

The new systems definitely have their place though.  Nothing compares to RBI for our crew, but at the same time there is nothing wrong with a quality game of Timesplitters.  You have to mix the old with the new, too many hardcore NES fans don't give the new consoles any chance.  Zealotry is bad my friends, no matter what the subject...

Couldnt agree more. Playing the NES or SNES is a blast and its always fun to play classic games like Contra, RBi, or Tecmo, but the newer systems hae equally fun sports games like Madden, NCaa football, and really every EA sports game. Its best to appreciate all systems equally because each one brings something different to the table to enjoy.

You're in college and you realize this?   Dude, you ROCK.   I have my 8 bit system with me right now and the only games I have with me (granted, I have many others at my parents house) are those that you listed:   RBI Baseball, Super Tecmo Bowl, and Mario 2.

BEST GAMES EVER

SCREW all these dumbasses like your dormmates who waste their jack on the stuff they put out now.  Who cares what kind of graphics they have bla bla bla.....

RBI,   TECMO,   MARIO    <-----   start from there and never look back.   Those are the only games you ever fucking need excpet MAYBE the Mega Man games for 8 bit.     I'm 100% heterosexual but if I ever met you I would hug you and take you out for steak.

This is a bit off topic but does anyone here remember... I think it was called Intelevision? Just wondering...

Yes I remember Intelevision and Coleco

I remember how complex the NES seemed when I first played it after years of owning an Atari.  Two buttons?  Pause?  Secret Codes?  Beware:  you don't want to become the old man who sits on his front porch all day long so you can yell at them to get a haircut and get off your lawn.

Dang blasted, kids.

Yeah, Intellivision was Mattel's console in the late 70's/early 80's. IIRC it was a better machine than the 2600, but Atari had such a strong userbase that it was basically impossible for any competing product to have a chance.

...and the Intellivision controllers were impressively bad.

As were the Coleco vision controllers....

And the good brother will agree with me here - the best "pre-NES" console game of all time is Miner 2049er for the Coleco Vision...

How true, although I would give Rocky and the Coleco baseball game a nod.

In contrast, War Games was possibly the most confusing early game I've ever played that wasn't called E.T.

The video game store by my apartment has an arcade machine with about 10 different Intellivision games on it. Unfortunately, it's always unplugged when I go in there.

I had a bad case of nostalgia about 5 years ago and bought all the old systems.  I've played the Intellivision once since then.  It is not very good.  I remember my buddy had it when were young and we had a good time playing the soccer game, but even back then I didn't care for the games much.  I thought the Atari was far better as it had games that were just more fun, kinda like how the original Nintendo rocked all the other supposedly superior systems of the time.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Its simple, First you walk around as E.T and some guy you can't get away from chases you and then you fall into some kind of pit thing and then a swarm of bees or bee-like things kill you. Game Over. what could be confusing about that?
Title: Re: I feel sorry for you guys

Sheesh.

Ok, there are three humans E.T. can interact with: the FBI agent, the scientist, and Elliot. The FBI agent only appears in game one, and only Elliot appears in game three. The FBI agent takes pieces of E.T.'s phone, and I think if he catches you so many times the game ends with you being caught. Maybe it's the scientist who will "catch" you. I don't remember. Eliott does nothing but take Reeses Pieces from you, and once you've given him nine of them he'll return with a piece of the phone.

E.T. starts with a fixed amount of energy; I believe it's 9999. Every time you move, you expend energy, and the game ends when it hits zero. I believe Eliott can "revive" you if you've given him enough Reeses Pieces, but I don't remember the specifics.

As you walk around the world, different icons appear in the bar at the top of the screen. Arrows move you to the next adjacent screen in the direction they're pointing. Some little circular thing with a dot in the middle lets you convert Reeses Pieces to energy. A phone lets you call Elliot. A question mark will make a dot appear in the pits on the screen if a phone piece is hidden in that pit. I don't remember the icon that lets you contact your ship. The "landing pad" icon (only appears on the forest screen) is where you need to be standing at the end of the countdown timer after contacting your ship. Isolated "dots" on the screen are Reeses Pieces.

There are numerous pits on almost every screen. Some contain pieces of E.T.'s phone, and there's a couple other hidden things I think. I remember a flower being in one of them. After falling into a pit, press the button to extend E.T.'s neck, then maneuver him upwards. Once out of the pit, continue to hold the button and maneuver E.T. away from the pit, preferrably not to the top of it.

Earn all three pieces of the phone (either by finding them in pits or getting them from Elliot) and find the icon to contact your ship. Once found with the phone, press the button on this icon. Then get back to the forest screen and be standing on the landing pad icon so your ship will pick you up. Avoid the FBI agent and scientist at all costs, if they're present in the game you selected.

Nothing confusing at all!

Now you fuckers made me play it.

Ok, there's no phone icon. There's a ship icon to call your ship, and the "call Elliot" icon looks like an 'e' with lines coming out of it. There's also a building icon (looks like: III) that makes any human onscreen return to his "home."

A winner is me:

You just played "E.T." I would hardly say that a winner is you...

I am much more scared of nightwulf's lenghty, detailed description of ET.  Please tell me that was a cut n' paste off another website...

Another confusing fucking game for the 2600 - Superman.  Fly around and try to not get a seizure from all the flashing and screen changes...

Absolutely not. I was quite the videogame nerd as a child, which should come as no surprise.

Since pulling out a 2600 emulator to jog my memory on E.T., I played through a ton of games I had as a kid. That fucking red dragon in Adventure still scares the shit out of me.

Pick up a power cord. It's well worth it. Let me know what games you need, and I'll have them ready for you in Chicago.

i also have some dreamcast games laying around at  my mom's house.  if TBT (or nightwulf) wants them, they are free.  i know for sure i have sonic adventure, bass fishing, pen pen tri-icelthon, chu chu rocket, NBA 2K and 2K1, and NFL 2K1.  pretty much all dreamcast games suck, from my recollection.

Nightwulfs opus on the ins-and-outs of ET is still one of the scariest things he's ever posted...
