Title: Keith Hernandez
Post by: ultimate7 on 09/24/05, 04:44:17 PM
Last night Spike had a special called "Viva Baseball" on about the history of Latin baseball players.  At one point Hernandez said some borderline racist/stereotypical stuff, I was pretty suprised.

Referring to Latin players being hotheads(I won't use quote because this isn't exact):

They are/seem very laid back, but if you get them mad...

Also Arcade RBIers Alvin Dark and Orland Cepeda didn't get along (Dark was the manager), and Dark was accused of being prejudiced against that Latin players on his team.

did he mention how 10 or more of them would typically room together on the road?

I think I heard Reggie White say something about that quality. . . .

That was a hell of a special, I only caught the last hour of it, most of it was about Cuba and Castro's revolution, but they're reairing it today at 10AM, and I'm taping it.

It had a very Ken Burns feel to it, I had to do a triple take to finally figure out that it really was on SpikeTV.

Some of the Clemente footage was quality.

12 gold gloves, 12 all star appearances, MVP, World Series MVP, 8 times in the top ten for MVP, 4 batting titles.

It's sad that he's still known more for his death than his career, especially considering he played for a solid 18 seasons hitting .317 along the way.
