Title: My favorite RBI glitch
Post by: antkowiak on 10/08/05, 06:07:40 PM
I've read through several forum posts and through much of your wonderful RBI baseball website -- however, when looking at the section of known glitches, there seems to be a notible omission.  There's a fairly easy-to-reproduce glitch that I've never heard anyone mention here before.  I remember this glitch from the early 90s while playing the unoffical Tengen version (black cart.)  I've also been able to produce this fairly easily through emulation. (Is the software identical for both the offical and unofficial versions?)

I'm sure you've all seen the glitch where the pitcher is too close to the plate or is off on the side of the screen -- which seems to be caused most frequently by selecting a pinch hitter before the pitcher appears on the mound for an inning.

Well, for years, I've known of an exploit that is quite funny.  Here's what you do:

1. Start a new game (I usually do it while playing against the NES.)
2. As the game is beginning, it will transition from the scoreboard screen to the pitcher/batter screen.  Hit "start" to call time at the exact same time that the transition is occurring.  Note that it is very important that you do this in the FIRST INNING for the very first time up to bat.
3. If you do it right, you'll have called 'timeout' before the pitcher has appeared on the mound.  Select a pinch hitter.
4. It doesn't happen every time, but I would estimate that this happens about 50% of the time (if you timed it right to not see the pitcher):  The pitcher will never come to the mound!
In fact, it looks like he might be pitching from behind second base.  He will continue to pitch and throw ball after ball, walking everybody.  You can still 'swing' and miss, or you can attempt to steal.  If you attempt to steal, the pitcher will come back for the next pitch.

There's a screenshot on my webserver: http://www.kife.net/rbi.png

Am I the only person who has ever seen this?  I would find that hard to believe that I'm alone in knowing this.

By doing this exploit, I've discovered (which I'm sure is already well known due to intelligent hackers/debuggers peeking at the asm dumps), that your score wraps from 99 runs back to 0.  But you still maintain your one-hundred run lead -- it will just display 100 less than your actual run total.  But if you hit 255 and score another, it wraps back to 0 because it is exceeding the 8 bit storage in memory that is being used to keep track of your score.  If you strike out your batters at this point, and let the other team score, they will "win" and you will "lose" :)

BTW, I'm a 23yr old software engineer living in Chicago :)  I love this website.

Yeah, I've noticed that glitch...a very funny one.

Holy shit, that's sweet.  I had no idea this could happen, and am surprised that I have never induced it since I like to play with Boston and always make sure to sub out Barret as fast as possible.

Yeah, welcome to the board, antkowiak.  You certainly seem like you have a good head on your shoulders.

And you know, I actually did once spend all too much time seeing what would happen if you scored 100 runs in a game, but didn't know that it actually WOULD reset after 255...  Very interesting stuff.

Well, I do know of another glitch, but I'm sure someone must know of this... I've been using this for years to take advantage of the 1-player AI.  (Or rather... lack of the "I" portion ... :)

If you are playing against the NES, and have runners on 1st and 2nd base, you can fool the NES into throwing the ball away.  Here's how:

1. You have your runners on first and second.
2. Make the NES defensive team throw the ball to second base.
3. While your runners are on base, move your runner that is on first base toward second, until the defensive 2nd base man starts chasing him down.
4. When the defensive 2nd base man starts charging toward your runner, retreat toward first.
5. While you are retreating to first, wait until you are almost all the way back to first.  Now make your base runner who is on 2nd, start running toward 3rd base.  The defensive 2nd base man will immediately throw the ball to third base.
6. As soon as the NES throws the ball to third, make your runner who was on 2nd, retreat toward 2nd base -- meanwhile making your runner who was on first base also running toward 2nd base.

As soon as your lead runner has reached back at 2nd base, the defensive 3rd base man will throw the ball to second -- but he's no longer there because he ran toward first base.

The ball will go into the outfield, and you'll likely end up scoring the lead runner with the other runner on third base.

Not that you need to cheat against the NES to win... but defeating the AI is somewhat amussing :)

Yeah, I pulled off the mini-pitcher unlimited walk glitch about a year ago and it was the first time I ever saw it.  There's a few old posts about it.  Here's one:

Its rare, but there's a few other things in RBI more rare, including the pitcher homerun (many, including me, still doubt their existance) and the super-duper homerun that you have to manually run the bases on.

I know nothing of the manual base running causing super homer....

And I don't believe in pitcher dingers.

I've never hit a home run (over or thru the fence) with a pitcher... I have come *really* close.  (Hit the top of the wall in right field.)

I've hit home runs with OSmith.. but only through the wall, never above it.

now that I think about it . . .

In regard to the pitcher home run . . .

If someone is interested, maybe they could modify a ROM such that all the batters in their line-up have the same batting stats/attributes as a pitcher... and try to hit dingers.. (would be nice to see video-cam proof :)

anyone try this?

There are "pitcher homerun" roms, even one with optimized fly ball trajectory, but I've never heard anyone report a successful HR.  I've watched many games on said roms and have only once seen a ball come close, and it was a long foul.
