Title: Forum software update
Post by: nightwulf on 11/06/05, 03:55:16 AM
We're upgraded to the most recent version of the forum software. This is the place for questions, comments, or complaints about the new version. Let me know what's broken ...

I would like to know what SMF stands for.  Preferably something joking and amusing.

Feels a little different, but seems okay on first glance.

I noticed that picture attachments now come up as thumbnails, and you have to click to enlarge. Can we change it back?

I think smaller is the wrong word.  The thread titles on the pages used to be thicker/bolder.  Now they're kinda thin.

McLane is right - topics used to be bold.

I do like that "Additional Options" is now expanded by default.  That got switched last upgrade and I forgot to complain about it.

Turned that off for now. I love the idea, but I'm trying to only shrink down to a thumbnail if the pic is over 800x600, and apparently I can't do that.

It just popped up for me when posting in the bigfoot thread.  I think it is automatic.

I can't find that fucking option anywhere at the moment. Assuming it's still on, since Mclane said it was.

I'm unable to insert quotes into quick reply, and it also seems that I can't quote in a regular supply (although this may have something to do with my pop up blocker...I'm an idiot)

Maybe nightwulf has already done something with this - I just hit the quote button from the main page (which usually inserts a quote into quick reply), and it took me to the standard "Post reply" page, with the quote pasted in.  That's what it used to do before I turned on Quick Reply by default, so I'm not sure exactly what changed.

Yeah, that's how it's working for me. If Quick Reply is on, and opened (if not shown by default), then clicking the "quote" button inserts the quote into the Quick Reply box.

I always use quick reply, and it's always open, but, it's still doing the same thing (when I hit 'quote' it takes me to the main reply page part)

Not that it matters as I suck at quoting and rarely alter any.

Sure can, just PM me your bank account information, social security number, all credit card numbers, home address and paypal account information...

The release notes for this new version mentioned an improved "pagination" scheme for the new button - I have a feeling that'll help with picture-heavy threads and the new button always going a little above the newest post.  If you know what I am talking about, keep and eye out and post if it helps...

There's an option when you create a new poll to show the results to anyone, or to show them only after someone has voted (or the poll has expired). I'm guessing whichever poll you looked at was setup to not show results unless you'd voted by whoever started the poll.

I haven't bothered to add it back in yet. "Wumpst" seems to be kicked by the server occasionally, and their scripts to show who's in the channel are still fucked. Every time there's a big gathering in chat people seem to post about it in Anything Goes anyway. I'm still looking into other options.

I've still not been able to reproduce this at all. Which browser are you using? Click here (http://nightwulf.rbicentral.com/cgi-bin/browserUA.pl) and let me know what the second line is (the "User Agent" string). Javascript also needs to be enabled for that style of quoting to work.

Did you ever get my PM about possibly using a Jabber server for dee-nee?  Does that support bots or have similiar functionality already built in?  Another idea is to run our own IRC server, though in both cases we would need a web front end.  Just throwing them out there...

This is now happening for me at home, the quote button is going to a fully reply.  I am certain that this behavior was not happening yesterday at work on my iBook.  Happens on both both Firefox 1.07 on Windows 2000 and Firefox 1.5rc1 on Mac OS X 10.4.3.  I'll try IE and Safari as well to see if it's tied to a particular user...

I can't help nearly as much as Gantry. All I know is, it's happening on my work comp, using IE 4.0, and I believe I have java script enabled (I'm not at work at the moment, so I can't check).
Title: Re: Forum software update

IE 4.0?  What version of Windows are you running at work?  You guys are sorely due for an upgrade if that is what you are actually running...
Title: Re: Forum software update
Post by: Gantry on 11/08/05, 09:43:56 AM
Just tested Safari (based off Konqueror) and that works as well.  I uninstalled the Tab Mix Plus extension on my firefox and it did not help.  I am 80% certain that clicking quote went to quick reply on this same laptop via firefox yesterday.  The only difference is that I was at work, I don't think I've installed anything new since then...

I do know that Adblock has been acting goofy for me lately on multiple PCs - some aviators are getting blocked and I can't see the list of blockable elements.  Wonder if that is causing any issues, I'm afraid to uninstall but I think I can save my list first...
Title: Re: Forum software update
Post by: BeefMaster on 11/08/05, 10:19:34 AM
I'm seeing it go into ful reply mode on Firefox 1.0.7, on both my home and work computers (XP Home and XP Pro).  It previously went to quick reply on both systems, and I don't believe I've changed any settings on either machine.

Minor nitpick - the "Dee-Nee forums" graphic at the top of the page use to be a link to the main homepage, which I found useful when I was looking at an RBI topic and wanted to make a quick check of rosters or something (I noticed this morning when I was going to check whether Joyner had an existing Hall of Shame entry, given today's steroid revelation).  I don't know whether it was an intentional change, and it's not a big deal, but it's something I noticed.

Yeah, like Gantry said, I'm a bit shocked that anyone's using IE4 anymore. But it did work on your work computer before the upgrade, yes?

My upstairs machine with FF 1.5rc1 does infact goto quick reply when quoting.  This machine also has adblock and Tab Mix, so the plot thickens.  I'll browse the SMF forums and see if anyone else has chimed in...
Title: Re: Forum software update
Post by: nightwulf on 11/08/05, 10:46:57 AM
I'm running 1.5RC1 with Adblock also. I did make a couple changes to the code that handles displaying a thread (and how "Quick Reply" is handled), but it wasn't what I was looking for (which was "Additional Options" on the post page), so I removed my changes. As a precaution, I trashed that file and replaced it with the original from the upgrade package, so check it out again unless I screwed something up.
Title: Re: Forum software update

No changes with quotes going to full reply on the iBook...

Title: Re: Forum software update
Post by: nightwulf on 11/08/05, 10:50:24 AM
I just grabbed an original and copied it to Sources at 10:44 am server time. My failed attempt at changing it would've been in the wee hours on the night I did the upgrade.

There's an onclick handler for the "quote" button as such:

onclick="if (!currentSwap) doQuote(184289); else window.location.href = this.href; return false;"

Are you getting any Javascript errors? With Firefox, open up Tools -> JavaScript Console, hit the "Clear" button, then try hitting the "quote" button again and see if anything comes up in the Javascript console.

Ok, the function getXMLDocument is located in /Themes/default/script.js, which is loaded on every Display page. Try wiping the Javascript console again then reload any thread display. Is script.js crashing somewhere?

Nothing is crashing anywhere, no errors in the Javascript Console.  Not only that, quotes suddenly go to quick reply now.  Did you change anything yet?

I think reloading a page before using the "quote" button is what fixes the problem.  Quote was going to a full reply on my PC until I reloaded the page, now it properly goes to quick reply.  A bug somewhere in SMF?

I replaced Display.template.php at 10:44 am server time, as mentioned above, but nothing I touched in the first place had to do anything with the loading of script.js. Best guess is that it's a bug in SMF, but I have no idea what it would be yet. I'm gonna try various other browsers and OSes I have access to and see if I can encounter it myself. Without being able to reproduce the bug myself, it's about impossible to try to fix it.

The strange this is that the one page reload has fixed both my computers to the point where I can't get it back.  Tried reloading firefox, logging in and out etc.  If it crops up again, I'll give you VNC access...

I'm not really adding anything to this, but the quote function has worked much better for me since the software upgrade.  Before, a new tab would open up displaying "retrieving quote" that would take a few seconds(sometimes not working at all) before the quote showed up in the quick reply box.  Ever since the software update, it's been instantaneous.

Lenny:  Safety inspector.
Grimes:  That irresponsible oaf?  A man who by all rights should have been killed dozens of times by now?
Lenny:  Three hundred and sixteen times by my count.
Grimes:  That's the man who's in charge of our safety.  It, it boggles the mind.
Carl:  It's best not to think about it.

Martin:  Behold, the power plant of the future, today!
Burns:  Yuchh.  Too cold and sterile.  Where's the heart?
Martin:  But it really generates power.  It, it's lighting this room right now.  [turns a knob, dimming the auditorium lights]
Burns:  You lose -- get off my property.

Burns:  Could you explain your model, young man?
Grimes:  [from audience] What's to explain?  He's an idiot!
Lenny:  [from audience] Pipe down!
Homer:  Well basically, I just copied the plant we have now.
Burns:  [impressed] Hmmm.
Homer:  Then, I added some fins to lower wind resistance.  [points to a stripe on the cooling tower] And this racing stripe here I feel is pretty sharp.
Burns:  Agreed.  First prize.  [gives Homer a blue ribbon, and some money]
Grimes:  [stands up] What?
Carl:  Way to go, Homer!
Lenny:  You're number one, Homer!
Grimes:  But it, it was contest for children!
Lenny:  Yeah.  And Homer beat their brains out!
          [audience cheers wildly]

Did some more tinkering with the forum software today. Now, any time an attached image is larger than 800x600, the software should automagically resize it down. You can still view the full-size image by clicking on the one shown in the post. Now you can start uploading all those huge pictures of scary Swedish women again ...

Hey nightwulf, has the allowable avatar size changed at all (not file size but actual HxW)? - I was just (bi?)curious.

I checked the forums at a show on Friday night and I'm happy to say that SMF now has a PDA version of the site for phones with low resolutions and bandwidth.  MUCH quicker than before on my Treo 650...

When going into chat, it does not open a new window.  I don't like that.  Fix it.  Do it now!

Missing the link on the home page (in the Forum Stats section) that allowed a user to read all threads that he/she have posted in.  I believe you (nightwulf) added this enhancement, previously.

The Dee-Nee plug-in apparently is not compatible with Firefox 1.5. Whatever updatin' needs to get done on that...

It's working fine for me, although I kept my plugin from 1.0.7 rather than reinstalling it.

The picture resize thingy isn't working in Anything Goes.  Check the official Dee-Nee Picture Thread - there's a post by Bonny on page 40 that's not resizing, and there was another one he posted recently that's not resizing, either.

Probably because he linked to those files elsewhere. The forum software can't warp through the internets and resize things hosted on other servers.

Ah, my bad - I just assumed they were attachments without actually looking to make sure.
