Wow, this is a little late but two big RBI birthdays. Quite possibly the best pitcher and worst hitter in the game are born on the same day.

Work on the database page, discuss the players - their careers, their RBI abilities, vote in the poll. Give your opinon of who is a better starter than Nolan Ryan...
Olshan
Nolan is always effective, and the Houston pitching staff is what keeps them valuable against bad teams....I think Houston can effectively compete against SF, NY, and StL. Ryan and Scott together are fierce, and with a few lucky base hits they can put up two or three runs per game, maybe.
Nolan is definitely a stud but he sure isn't John Tudor. He throws serious fucking gas and has pretty good stamina but I don't think he's even the best pitcher on his own team.
Mike Scott has a far, far superior changeup/dropball/whatever and seems to pitch deeper into the game (I'm probably wrong on the stamina thing but am too lazy to look it up at the moment.)
The Ryan/Scott tandem is what makes Houston so maddening. They have two top ten pitchers but really not much else.

Ryan and Scott both have the same endurance. One thing with Ryan though is that many folks abuse his fastball, which would drop his endurance quicker than most...
Thanks for checking, Gantry. And you're right, Nolan is like a loaded gun and players just can't wait to shoot that fastball down the pipe. Actually, the same can apply to Scott, since his changeup is so good it is often abused.
Obviously, the key with these two guys and really with every pitcher is to take it easy with the fastballs and changeups.
The more you learn about RBI, the more you realize that going back to basics is what's successful...
Nolan is awesome in straight pitch.
He's over rated in real life. .. . . . ..

Bonny's having his period.
Nolan's overated, even a black guy that banks at Ryno's bank agrees.
Can't you understand that bonny?
OVER-RATED!!

The jerk store called...and they're out of you!
One thing I wonder about (I don't play much ATG, so I'm really not sure) - is Scott's drop rating too good? I mean, if you hear the slowball coming, and he's still relatively fresh, can you just automatically take the pitch, knowing it'll likely be a ball?
Ryan is great, although I think for high-level games, great curve is more important than lots of heat. I still think he's an elite starting pitcher, though.
We don't play too much with Houston, but whenever we do and I'm pitching with Scott, whenever I use a drop ball (relatively rare, usually in a jam late in the game) Octo just takes them and they almost always drop for a ball.
Scott's a better pitcher (and more clutch) than Nolan Ryan (http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B09250HOU1986.htm)
Whenever I'm Houston I always start with Scott over Ryan, which is why I voted for "Don't find him that good" and don't have a soulmate.

Interesting RBI box score - only 3 players reached base against Scott that game, and two of them were RBIers (Gladden and Chili). The losing pitcher was Juan Berenguer; I didn't know he was ever a starter.
Started 95 games.
Was also traded for Nokes and King (along with Bob Melvin)

Yes it is, I think you want a drop rating about 9-10 ideally, though when Scott get's tired, his drop pitch is more effective.
ultimate is right. Scott's drop pitch in the early innings is take take take the whole way because it never stays up. As always, it depends who you're playing though. The thing I always loved about Scott's drop pitch is that it still comes in pretty quick.
Scott's drop ball is the same speed as his regular pitch.
Its that splitty/scuff ball he threw.

I believe this is why he's as good as he is. I also believe that if you just use the drop pitch as an out pitch, then you're on the right track to using Great Scott! the right way.
