Title: Attn. NorCal Residents: weekly RBI league
Post by: broiler on 08/30/06, 04:16:30 PM
i have recieved the green light to start a weekly RBI league at our local sports bar, Auesiellos 5th street bar and grill in downtown santa rosa california.  Although it is still in the formative stage, it should be taking place on wednesday nights at 10:00 PM.  Sometimes the bar closes at that time, but they generally keep it open if there are people still drinking.  We have the okay to stick around after closing because 2 people who work there will be in the league.  Alot of people are showing interest and this could be really fun.

if you live in the bay area and are interested, give me a PM for further information.

Chab... nickname based on my last name... Charbonneau... which is French...
AHHH HAAAAAAAAAA  a frenchman has landed in this Forum!  BOuYA

Ticket to fame:  hmmm

1)   The only Charbonneau in the Major was Joe Charbonneau, played in 1980 for Cleveland..was rookie of the year, then hmm probably became a drunk since he was known for opening beer bottle with his eye socket and could drink the suds through a straw in his nostril.

relationship with joe:  ... his great great great grand-father probably was on the same boat as my great great great grand-father... who were probably cousins... then well, after a long dispute in the family over our turnip land, we kick his ass towards South...  (i made that last part up, but as long as I'm entertaining, no one will mind right?...)

2) I lived with Eric Gagne for 2 yrs while playing for our crappy national team.  (and no I wasnt the waterboy   ;)

....

I'm at work now... ughhhh

I think you become our 3rd Canadian, but our first French Canadian, do you understand the stock market?

I think you will have problems getting a game online as I don't know that many play online because of the lag problems

Dempster... hmm I'll ask my sister if she ever did him?  She probably did... she collects baseball players underwear...

3rd Canadian... 1st French Canadian... GO MOI!

stock market?  Is that the place they sell stock?   ;)  like wal-mart, but for stocks?

I've tried to read a bit of the past threads... but since this is probably gonna take me 2 mths, mind as well ask...   How about we start a league ourselves?... i know its been tried before, but I'd be more then happy to be part of that!

Sadly, it's not the speed of your connection that's the problem - the problem is that NES games require a lot of work for the server, and it's the server that gets overwhelmed.

Now that I think of it, there may be an online league going on, run by MrOrangeJuice, who rarely shows up here anymore.  I'll see if I can dig up the thread.  He uses a different emulator and online setup than has been previously used, and I think he's had better luck.

By the way, Terry Puhl is Canadian for those of you who think he sucks... HE DOES!

.... I have 3 computers at home... I might be good to host some of the games?...  Someone would have to tell me what to do exactly... I have limited knowledge on networking and IP shit...

tonight is the first night of league play.  we have 8 people for sure and about 5 or 6 people who say they will probably make it.  yesterday i bought a generic top loader console for $35 and rbi for $5.  i also picked up rbi2, major league baseball, baseball, tecmo baseball, pro wrestling, tecmo wrestling, trojan, ninja kid, 3d worldrunner, and ghostbusters (possibly the worst game ever).

last night went very well.  i beat out some tough competition and walked away with the championship.  the only thing we need to improve on is bracketing.  making a 12 man double elimination bracket is confusing.  next week i am hoping for a 16 man single elimination just to keep it easier.

I was figuring this would be more league and less tournament.

Such as everyone plays a few games a week and you compile the records for a season end tourney.

this was the trial night to see how many people would actually show and to see who was interested enough in joining a league.  i figure next week will have new faces and we may lose some people from last night.  hopefully week after next official league play will begin.

all but one guy had a great time, and i saw him enjoying himself a couple of times even if he wont admit it.  he was duped by his opponent into picking st. louis for his first game and it left a bad taste in his mouth for most of the evening.

week 2.  if we get 12 people like last week its going to be double elimination again.  i have a printout of a bracket so this time there will be less confusion.  but if we get 16 people like i am hoping, i may just make it single elimination to keep things moving quicker.

right now my game is hot and i dont think i can be beaten.  i have been practicing with minnesota and new york, two teams i normally dont use but will have to use

you can expand the choice of video games, just maybe play one a month with the major tournament for each particular game culminating in a championship at the end of said month.  you could do rbi every other month as your solid staple video game, then mix in others in the months in between just to keep things fresh.  just an idea.

i am thinking about throwing the title this week to raise interest levels.  there is alot of midlevel competition and to keep their spirits high i plan on throwing some serious meatballs on tuesday.  i wont make it look too obvious, but i wont be throwing my regular nasty pitches.  if i win for a fourth week in a row i fear no one will want to play.

i threw the tourney last night.  only 8 people showed.  in the finals i was st louis and my buddy brian was boston.  he beat me 1-0.  i only allowed two hits so it looked like i was trying to win.  hopefully the word will spread that i lost and more people will show next week.

since only 8 people were there and they had to leave early we did single elimination, only needing one console.  we plugged the other one up and randoms from the bar were playing it.  the best part of the night was seeing people i didn't know getting excited about rbi.  hopefully some of them will show next week

Title: Re: Attn. NorCal Residents: weekly RBI league

i won it three weeks in a row.  two groups of friends that came different weeks said there was no point in playing in an rbi tournament because i would win it every time.  they pretty much called me a dick for throwing a weekly tournament in a game that i was better than everyone else.  we started strong on week one and participation has gotten worse by the week.

think what you want frisbee boy, but i have a feeling that yes, when people found out that someone else won, it may give them hope that they could win and maybe give it another shot.

besides, it was either that or just pick another game to play to spark more interest.

the owner lets us do it on tuesday nights because that night is particularly slow for them.  without us it would be virtually empty.  from the start he said no chance of changing nights and now that we have made tuesday nights more profitable for him there is absolutely no chance in changing it.  and besides, i like doing it on tuesday night.  it gives me something to look forward to in the shitty part of the week.

we have had no less than 8 per week with 12 being our highest.  this week i am expecting 12.

man, last night was awesome.  the bar was packed because of the playoffs, but after the game was done we settled in.  12 players, all with game to bring to the table.  the first round was full of upsets.  all the guys who sucked week 1 have developed some skills and are starting to become a threat.  i ended up beating my buddy skislut in the final.  we went with All Stars because thats what we would play in college.  final score 3-2 broiler

sounds like a good turnout.  maybe if this keeps up, i'll have to make a trip up in the spring.  maybe i'll get to see some of your sweet bikes too.

i lost last night.  a tough 2nd round knockout.  4-1 i was minnesota he was detroit.  in all fairness i lost to a good competitor who had to fight through the best players.  we also had a couple of new people last night who were super stoked on playing rbi again.  also, the guy who won has been lurking the rbi board looking for tips.  apparently its paid off

tongiht will be interesting.  the owner of the bar is finally realizing that we are bringing him some business and he started putting up promotional flyers in the bar all week.  it has sparked interest in many.  but most of the regulars are not going to make it tonight.  i am hoping to get some unknown ringers to make it a fun one.

most of the regulars flaked but we had 8 people anyway.  some new faces but none too good at rbi.  the cool thing was that the bar owner gave the winner, me, $20 in credit at the bar.  pretty cool

not when a cash prize is at stake.  plus, i was playing against people i didn't know.  when i threw it, it was to a regular so i knew the word would spread that i was beatable.
