Hi everybody.
I'm a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and would like to do a story on the continuing popularity of RBI Baseball. If you live in the Chicago area and are involved in an RBI league, I'd like to talk to you. Thanks for your time.

Seriously?
Also, if this is serious, the entire article should be written about Gantry.
This whole site is dedicated to Chicago area RBI'ers.
hey pat,
gantry is your man. not only does he run this site, but he finished 3rd in the national rbi championships this year in columbus ohio, and invented the rbi drinking game
Yep, seriously -- provided there are enough Chicago-area players. And if Gantry is from Chicago, I guess I came to the right place.
Pat Kampert
you should also interview the management team at the Airport Comfort Suites in Columbus.
But seriously Gantry is your man. Defnitly hottest player in 2007.
Mike Beales would also be a good guy to talk interview...well as long as gantry still gets a write up. however beales lacks charisma, and also lacks foul body odor.

I feel like such an outcast...I haven't even played RBI in a few years
I don't know that there are much for ongoing leagues, at least not among members of this forum (other than the RBI Fantasy League (http://fantasyrbi.rbicentral.com/)), but Mike Beales and Gantry Zettler would definitely be important guys to talk to. Gantry, of course, put this site together, and it's easily the premier RBI Baseball site on the internet, bringing together RBI afficionados from all around the world (really - there are active members in Sweden and Canada, and there have been a couple occasional posters from Mexico and Japan). It attracts not only players but also hackers - if someone is editing the game (updating rosters, changing graphics, etc.), this is one of the first places they go to demonstrate and discuss their work.
Beales stages a national tournament in Chicago every other year, with the next one scheduled for the coming June. SmokedUBad is his alias on the forum, and the website for his tournament, the RBI Baseball Championship Of The Universe Tournament (COTUT) is at http://www.rbibaseballcotut.com/
if you happen to have any lists in your story, you should definitely include me
Thanks for your help, guys. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Pat
the largest controversy in rbi baseball is if the pitcher can hit a homerun over the fence.

I'd say the blowjob RBI is the biggest controversy
I've tried to pull all of our technical discussions about how the game works into this thread which links to several others in the first post

Thanks, Big Hath. I appreciate your help!
Pat
I had sent Pat an e-mail earlier, and I thought I'd take the discussion public to get some more input.
Pat had asked me if RBI Baseball was going to be featured on the Wii. As far I know, the main reason it hasn't is the licensing issues ensuing from the Tengen/Nintendo lawsuits in the 1980s. Can anyone confirm that? This is one of the better descriptions I've seen of the lawsuit (http://members.fortunecity.com/aking1/3rdparty/tengen.html) - if anyone knows more information or a better resource, please post it here.
Also, Pat had mentioned to me that the story was about old school video gaming. I know that TBT is very involved in the Tecmo Bowl universe. TBT - do you know of any Chicago-area players that might be good sources for Pat?
I want a copy of the paper when this is printed.
I dont know of any Tecmo Bowl players personally or unpersonally for that matter in chicago.
more than likely there would be a few Tecmo Super Bowl players though.
http://www.knobbe.org/mx/index.php?page=2 Matt Knobbe's site/message board has the most chatter for any version of tecmo bowl. that would be a good start. Sort of in the same neck of the woods, but minneapolis has been home to 2(IIRC) national tournaments for TSB.
as for RBI some points that might need to be covered is the 3 variations of the game...anything goes, slurve, and straight pitch.
also the wallzie
Good point, broiler. Pat is certain to know what you're talking about by that comment...
...dolt.
JoeDirt is one of the top ranked players.
Pat should write about Dirt's late night grooming habits.

Nintendo will neither confirm nor deny anything relating to Wii Virtual Console releases. That said ...
1- Any title for which licensing is shaky has not appeared on VC. Arguably the biggest title for the N64 was GoldenEye, but with Rare repositioning as a Microsoft dev team, it's unlikely that Nintendo could get the rights easily. Thus, despite the fact that everyone wants it, it's not there.
2- No Tengen-licensed games appear on the console now. They didn't have many runaway hits, but if you check a list of their releases (http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/company/72676.html), you'll note a few important titles. If Nintendo doesn't want to bother to license Pac-Man, Paperboy, or Gauntlet, I doubt they'll pursue the RBI series.
Thanks, guys. I'm not really interested in Tecmo Bowl -- just RBI Baseball. I'd like to look at the popularity of classic games by focusing on just this one.
Pat
there have been a few online leagues in past years, mostly run by a cowboy with orange shoes.
hey pat, this picture may help the article demonstrate the popularity
TBT - you need the homerun fireworks...
Awesome stuff and thanks for the interest Pat. I'd be willing to have a discussion, but I'm not entirely sure what we'd talk about. I guess that would be your job though. Focusing on the tournaments makes the most sense, someone besides me find a list of the entries for the last few big ones and list the diversity in states....

Broiler: A tattoo? Is that modeled on the RBI stadium? And do you live in the Chicago area?
Pat Kampert
that tattoo is a screen shot from rbi and it is on a forum member named tbt. he also has another with the rbi logo.

Currently, his name is Todd Blythe(Terror?), actually. He's from Ft. Dodge, IA... I have no idea whether that's close enough to Chicagoland for the Trib, though.
I had a phone interview today, not sure I was able to give much insight as I was trying to chase around a 2 year old during the conversation
with pat or for a job or both
I'm hoping it was Pat, otherwise it was a fairly random statement for this thread
Yes with Pat, I informed him of JoeDirt's tendency to choke
the question is, why were you interviewed? you suck at rbi.
I'm 4 - 5 hours south of Chi-town and I am unofficially the top ranked nude RBI-er on the planet. I have only lost one game ever. And have thrown a no-hitter and a perfect game in the the buff. My most memorable performance was in Oneonta, NY during RBI HOF weekend of Ryne and Wade. I was playing fellow forum member rastein and pitched and 11 inning 1 hitter with Mike Witt. Alan Trammell led off the game with a HR for him and I went lights out after that. Ruppert Jones had a couple HRs.
*My nude games all include my lucky Cardinals hat.
In this year's national tourney, I lost a game because I gave up a Steve Lake home run, then the next day I won a game by hitting a home run with Steve Lake.
I win.
Gerlost:
Steve Lake, now there's an old Chicago baseball name.
But how did you lose AND win because of him? Do you guys switch teams in the middle of a tournament?
Pat

yes. on account of there not really being a difinitive order of teams from best to worst a system was devised to have a rotating set up where u play with various teams. for the most part the macth-ups are fair so no one gets screwed in that manner.
Strassy is in the Chicago area (somewhere in the suburbs, right?). He and Nacho attempted to play RBI Baseball for 24 hours straight last year, falling short, but making an heroic effort none the less.
Also, Pat, you might want to contact Mike Beales - he runs the RBI Championship of the Universe Tournament on odd-numbered years in the Chicago suburbs. You can contact him through the RBI COTUT website at http://www.rbibaseballcotut.com/. Last year's tournament had 16 players, and I'm sure that he could give you a good perspective on the competitive side of things.
I don't know why Gantry is ducking you. Wanted for tax evasion? We'll work on him.

Top that.
I hate Dusty Baker and Neifi Perez, and I beat the hell out of Joe Dirt one time.
the game was made before i was born.
I'd also like to say that i was part of a four man team that finished 24 consecutive hours of RBI. A feat that hasn't yet been topped. And I'm 100% certain that Briz and I will soon be completing a 2 man session sometime in the near future.

GoReds and I tried drinking watch game with beer in 2001 and just finished all the drinks we owed about 3 weeks ago.
Oh, we didn't play by the strictest rules... we stopped when my friend had taken seven and a half shots in eight minutes. Though we'll make him finish that game some day...

I believe we played 70 games straight, listening to nothing but the RBI music for about 60 of those games.
24 hours or RBI music is the best...
And as GoReds put it best, Tengen Field was burnt into our retinas.
The Trib reporter is coming to my house tomorrow night (Friday 7:30 PM) to do a write up and photo shoot for the article. Beales and I will be there but he would like there to be 3-4 players so if anyone else local (possibly Gantry or Strassy) is interested in showing up PM me ASAP
come on guys! We need at least one drunk asshole representing there.
Make sure Beales explains how bops occur.
Gantry has really got to show up for this thing.
Ganty MUST show. Strassy really, really ought to be there as well due to his RBI-enthusiasm and feats (many of which I witnessed), though he is in Bloomington-Normal today. I'm sure a trip to B-N is the one and only thing that Strassy would rather do than receive RBI recognition.
Just got home from work now, my apologies...

Everyone is gone, Beales, Bandur, and their friend Luke were here with camera man and photographer. I went 0-3 against Beales getting slaughtered in my first game then losing a couple of 1 run games.
