God, this game looks amazing. Improving upon an amazing game:

Man that's straight out of Bases Loaded, though it looks like they have multiple batting views.
The first game was fucking solid. This game looks to be a major improvement in every way.
How does the batting mode work? Preview showed both RBI style and Bases Loaded style batting angles...
Batting is from view of batter, pitching is from view of pitcher (unless you're playing 2p mode from same console, then it's always from batter's view).
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
For Xbox One owners, it's a freebie for the month of May through Games with Gold.
Pretty rare to have a day-one release on Games with Gold, but they've done it once or twice before (pretty sure Slime Rancher was an example of that as well).
it's like "heyyyy xbox patrons who don't get to play the show — wanna play some baseball?"
The fact that there's not been a simulation-style baseball game on the Xbox platform for like five years now is pretty embarrassing, and I say that as someone who has never cared for that style of game.
Supposedly RBI '18 made some big advances in its season mode, but I was disappointed enough in the two earlier versions I bought that I'm not about to drop $30 on it (the supposed advances this year also came with a $10 price bump).
i hear rbi 18 is dumb
never liked 16, didn't play 17
Lips and I played the first one for a bit, was fun for what it was but definitely limited. Do they still not have online play?

The initial '14 version promised but didn't deliver online play, although I think they got it figured out by '15. I have '16 on the Xbox One, and that has it.
I got a lot of playing time in on '14, but I've barely played '16 in the two years I've had it - the gameplay was basically the same as '14, but the graphics changed subtly and made it basically impossible for me to see a pitched ball if I played on the treadmill, farther away from the TV.
I still maintain that the RBI reboot would have been more fun and sold better if they'd actually made it a roster update and port rather than a fully new game. Hell, just including the original (with or without updated rosters) as a game mode would have been good enough for me and taken extremely little effort for them to do.
I agree a port would have been better, though I'm guessing they didn't have the rights from Tengen to use the code.

Actually, it's not like that at all. The first game got HUGE praise for good reason and it continues to be a very popular game (it's also available on PS4 and PC). I'm really freakin' surprised at how a 3 developer shop from Canada with no prior titles was able to put out such an amazing product, but they did. And now, the second iteration of the game looks to be "the silver tuna, Marv." I am actually picking this up in lieu of MLBTS this year. Don't discount it until you've given it a go...
Edit, just reread your post, didn't see the "xbox patrons" part, thought you were addressing everyone. Carry on...

I thought about that, too, but they DID get the rights to the trademark and the music, at the very least (the RBI "beginning of the game" music plays during the opening logos), so I would have figured the game's source code would have been a part of whatever IP they licensed/bought.
Somebody sure likes to make a lot of assumptions

what an ass!
A full 9 innings of gameplay...game due out tonight! P.S. I think it might be fun to put the original RBI teams in the game, apparently you can play with the custom teams online, just not in "Pennant Race" mode.
I could see an online league thing happening...

online leagues would be the ish
Unlocked the free Xbox copy and remotely kicked off the download to my Xbox, so I might try it out over lunch.
Tried it. Its boring and hokey. Alot like real baseball.
Gave it a shot today over lunch. Won a 5-inning game against the computer on a walk-off single on like 15 ego. Pitching is a bitch to get the hang of, although I cannot tell how much my consistent missing of the little circle is actually making a difference in the outcome.
It's cool and I'll definitely give it another shot and maybe create a couple vanity teams (I spent 15 minutes recreating the uniforms from the Babe Ruth team I played on but didn't get around to creating players).
You should make me an player, to placate my ego
A bonny-esque Dee-Nee custom team sounds like an excellent idea!
Nope, just a team of Gantrys
SO GOOD

One of my favorite things is how pitching is a challenge. Closer you get to the reticle the more it takes off if they hit it, and if you miss, thry will drill the shit out of the ball at higher egos. I play at 50 cause that's what our league uses and it's pretty challenging!
The league is fun, we had points we could use to build our team.
Also, you should see all the uniforms and stuff people are making.

Recreated my church coed softball team after our game the other night plus an extended lunch hour yesterday. Also started an elimination tournament with a default team (go Sirloins!) and have been slowly ramping up the Ego rating as I go. The game has grown on me very quickly. Also while I was waiting for it to download an update the other day I played a game of the original for the first time in a couple years; it's fine, but the sequel is more refined in every way.
Xbox here, so can't join up with Turd/nomaaa/bonny.
Can I play this on my PS2 or Wii or ZX-81?

I'd actually double purchase it on PC to play vs. you guys, but that's your call if you want to do that. The thing about the PC that appeals to me is that someone already wrote a team sharer to be able to send teams to people and import them.
Im about to leave work, eat some Taco Bell and make some teams.
I really hope they add a share feature/roster vault type thing
Let's get a little more detail on that Taco Bell order...
Yeah, for instance, does your location have Chili Cheese Burritos? If it doesn't, you should join the fight to bring it back. My C-14 levels are at an all-time low and I can't drive to Appleton every time I need a fix.

I'm not into it enough (or enough of an online gamer) for that to be worth it, so for now I will keep working on figuring out my ideal CPU Ego level and watching the results of you guys beating each other up.
Chili cheese burritos. FTW.
Are other folks using the button or the analog stick for power swings? I'd been using the button (X on the Xbox controller), but I decided to try out the stick during my games yesterday, and it triggered a rain of dongs - I may have hit ten in one game. I don't know if that was coincidence (launch angle was definitely way up, so maybe I'm adjusting the left stick differently, and my timing has of course improved as I've played), or if there's actually a bonus to using the stick instead of the button.
Flick that Dong Stick

I use the stick because it's easier to check my swing if I decide at last minute not to swing.
P.S. I bought the PC version too. Someone released a 30-team roster pack with logos and whatnot. Had to purchase to save me the time it'd take to enter in all that shit...

sounds good
Just finished a season with my possibly-overpowered church softball team murdering the rest of the league on Ego 50 (I even threw my first perfect game in the series-clinching game), so I cranked the ego up to 80 and tried a five-inning game to see how attainable the "win a standard league on Ego 80" achievement would be.
HOLY SHIT the ball comes in fast. I managed two hits and struck out seven times in those five innings, and one of those hits was a seeing-eye single to the left side. I was happy with my pitching and fielding, as the CPU only managed one dinger and a couple scattered singles, but if I give that season a shot, I'm really gonna have to work on my reaction speed at the plate.
i bet you'll get the hang of it. still wanna get that game but i'm addicted to the show
mlb the show just dropped a new patch last friday & the hitting has become a LOT more difficult. however it's so much more enjoyable this way tbh. there are 8 divisions and typically flirt between leagues 2 & 3. made it to the top league the first year they had itbut not since. most of my games had a total of 10-18 runs scored on average, and now they're more like 4-6 rpg total. the flashback cards are the shit. i have 2012 andrew mccutchen & adam jones in my OF
I love how difficult you can set this game to be.
Can you set it to know-it-all teenager mode? Cause that would be really difficult, AMIRITE parents??!?!?!?
BUMP
Super Mega Baseball 3 has been out for a year, but it just hit Xbox Game pass this week, and I downloaded it and tried out a game after work. I played my initial game on the Ego 15 setting, very casual, and it came back to me pretty quickly. Very excited to get back into the game, try out the franchise mode, and slowly see how much I can ramp up the difficulty. I may not play another game of MLB The Show.
do they have it on the switch, and if so, can we play together?
i'm looking for a new arena of victims
It is on switch. And there is cross play. This game is incredible.
turd approved?? i'm sold.
you hear that, bonny??
Definitely approved. My favorite game no question. So much customization, and a great franchise mode.
i'll download this ish today
someone tell me more about this, pls. I do have a Switch and pretty much all I use it for is Fortnite (so not that much)
My kids have Switches now, so if there is online play, this could be a winner.
It's the newest in a series of baseball games, that basically tries to bridge the gap between casual and simulation. No real teams/players, although there's a really deep team editor that allows you to recreate whatever you'd like to try and recreate (it also allowed me to import the teams I'd created in SMB2, which is nice), and the newest game added a franchise mode. Graphics are cartoonish but not inordinately so, and the on-field gameplay is really solid. On-field results come out pretty realistic, depending on what sort of difficulty level you're playing on. I seem to recall reading when SMB2 came out that the developers' goal was that you should be able to play a game in 20 minutes, and that appears to still hold up.
The adjustable difficulty is where the game really shines. They have a system called "Ego" that's on a scale from 0-100, allowing you to slowly scale the difficulty (or not, if you just like beating up on the CPU). At low difficulty levels, you get more reaction time for pitches, the batting reticle homes in on the pitch location a lot, fielders will at least start jogging toward the location of a batted ball, and CPU batters don't capitalize on your pitching mistakes. At higher levels, a 90MPH fastball is a 90MPH fastball, a misplaced pitch is going to get crushed, and you're completely on your own in the field. Looking back through this thread, it looks like I eventually got myself in to the 50s or 60s (the game names the ego levels, I think it calls it "hard" by about 50), but I never made a real attempt at the "win a season on ego 80" achievement or the "beat the computer on ego 99" one.
I've never tried online play, but this game has it for both normal games and franchise mode.
i just heard about the online franchise part. pretty much a "have to" at those point
online franchise is all i ever really wanted from a baseball video game

Yeah, the ego system is genius. You can play against anyone because you can set the egos as appropriate. You could play vs. your kid and make it difficult for you but easy for them where they don't have to aim. And, you can set the ego for specific parts of the game (pitching, hitting, fielding, etc).
Don't let the arcade graphics fool you. It's an incredibly deep game. You could spend hours in the team editor as well. If you play it on steam on PC, you can even import the MLB teams every year (not possible on consoles). I'd play a game if anyone wants to, I have it on PC, but crossplay is available.
Also, one more thing, the league configuration is so extensive. You can set it up so many ways from casual tuesday night games to serious leagues with deadlines and whatnot.
is it possible to have someone on PC set up a league with cool rosters and then have people on console play along with those rosters?
Only if you also play it on PC. The rosters don't transfer to consoles. That was a requested feature, but they aren't doing anymore work on SMB3, possibly working on 4 or a different title (the small team that made it got bought out by EA Sports).

I had no idea about this until I downloaded the game via Game Pass and noticed that it had an EA Play logo in my games list rather than just Game Pass, and of course there was a ridiculous EA click-through EULA the first time starting the game (although at least it didn't do the separate EA Account nonsense like Star Wars Battlefront).
The purchase makes a lot of sense for EA - if Sony ever loses exclusivity on the MLB license and they want to resurrect their baseball series, Super Mega Baseball would be a rock-solid foundation for it.
BUMP
Super Mega Baseball 4 hit Game Pass this week. It's basically an update of 3 with the same features (fairly substantial franchise mode, editable rosters, hugely customizable difficulty settings, etc.) plus a new one that they're really excited about: "Baseball legends". They added a new "Legends League" with 200-ish former MLB players, including a ton of RBIers - just from playing a few games, I've come across Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven, Gary Gaetti, Dwight Evans, Steve Bedrosian, Chris Speier(!), probably a dozen other guys I'm forgetting. I'm playing an "Elimination" tournament right now (just an 8-team bracket, best of three each round) with the "Originators" team, which has Babe Ruth and Willie Mays, although most of the players are a lot more recent.
