God, this game looks amazing.  Improving upon an amazing game:

Man that's straight out of Bases Loaded, though it looks like they have multiple batting views.

Turd

The first game was fucking solid.  This game looks to be a major improvement in every way.

Gantry

How does the batting mode work?  Preview showed both RBI style and Bases Loaded style batting angles...

Turd

Batting is from view of batter, pitching is from view of pitcher (unless you're playing 2p mode from same console, then it's always from batter's view).

For Xbox One owners, it's a freebie for the month of May through Games with Gold.

Pretty rare to have a day-one release on Games with Gold, but they've done it once or twice before (pretty sure Slime Rancher was an example of that as well).

The fact that there's not been a simulation-style baseball game on the Xbox platform for like five years now is pretty embarrassing, and I say that as someone who has never cared for that style of game.

Supposedly RBI '18 made some big advances in its season mode, but I was disappointed enough in the two earlier versions I bought that I'm not about to drop $30 on it (the supposed advances this year also came with a $10 price bump).

Lips and I played the first one for a bit, was fun for what it was but definitely limited.  Do they still not have online play?

The initial '14 version promised but didn't deliver online play, although I think they got it figured out by '15.  I have '16 on the Xbox One, and that has it.

I got a lot of playing time in on '14, but I've barely played '16 in the two years I've had it - the gameplay was basically the same as '14, but the graphics changed subtly and made it basically impossible for me to see a pitched ball if I played on the treadmill, farther away from the TV.

I still maintain that the RBI reboot would have been more fun and sold better if they'd actually made it a roster update and port rather than a fully new game.  Hell, just including the original (with or without updated rosters) as a game mode would have been good enough for me and taken extremely little effort for them to do.

I agree a port would have been better, though I'm guessing they didn't have the rights from Tengen to use the code.

Actually, it's not like that at all.  The first game got HUGE praise for good reason and it continues to be a very popular game (it's also available on PS4 and PC).  I'm really freakin' surprised at how a 3 developer shop from Canada with no prior titles was able to put out such an amazing product, but they did.  And now, the second iteration of the game looks to be "the silver tuna, Marv."  I am actually picking this up in lieu of MLBTS this year.  Don't discount it until you've given it a go...

Edit, just reread your post, didn't see the "xbox patrons" part, thought you were addressing everyone.  Carry on...

I thought about that, too, but they DID get the rights to the trademark and the music, at the very least (the RBI "beginning of the game" music plays during the opening logos), so I would have figured the game's source code would have been a part of whatever IP they licensed/bought.

A full 9 innings of gameplay...game due out tonight!  P.S. I think it might be fun to put the original RBI teams in the game, apparently you can play with the custom teams online, just not in "Pennant Race" mode.

I could see an online league thing happening...
