Title: RBI "Straight Pitch" League-Draft
Post by: Stock on 02/02/05, 08:21:39 AM
The person with the 8th pick will also get the 9th pick and the person with the 16th pick will also get the 17th pick, and so on.
Pitchers are not really important in Straight pitch, but we will draft them in the separately in rounds 13-16.

There are no rules for drafting players (ie, you do not have to have a player from each position)  No rules for pitchers either.
At the end of the draft, one day will be given for any trades (unless everyone notifies me they are perfectly happy with their selections.)  Any player has the right to strike a trade (in the event that it is truly unfair... I will have the final say).
Once everyone is happy with their selections, they can send me their lineups (1-12).

Once the draft starts, I do not want to be too harsh on the time limit b/w drafts.  I have meetings this week so will be in and out.  Let's just try to move this along as soon as possible.

I think the draft order should be determined randomly, nobody should get an unfair advantage to start out with...

Also, even though it is a straight pitch league, I think pitchers are up for grabs.  If someone wants a Nolan Ryan or Senor Smoke early, that should be their choice....

I like the random draft order.  I have a few questions, though.

Do pitchers have to pitch from the center of the mound, only pushing A (no speed/slow pitches)?

Are we allowed to draft All-Stars, at all...or is there a limit to All-Star players per team?  All-Star pitchers included?

Random order it is.  I used a random number generator in Excel to determine the order... you all will have to take my word for it.  Here is the order:
1.  Nails, 2.  Lips, 3. Ryno23, 4. Stockw19, 5. JoeDirt, 6. Gantry, 7. Baines, 8. Noah

My intent was to play straight pitch (by only pressing "A").  I will start a poll though.

All-Stars are up for grabs.  There is no limit as everone has equal oportunity to select them.  And sure.  If you really want to pick a pitcher over a batter, then so be it.  We will have 16 rounds (you can pick any player-4 pitchers, 12 batters).

Lets start the draft as soon as we figure out how the pitching will work.  I may close early if there appears to be a clear cut preference.

87654321

rotating rounds

Exactly.  The person w/ the #8 will also get the #9.  The person w/ #16 will also get #17 and so on.  This is the fairest way to do it w/o a seeding system.

I will also need from each of you:

1.  The 2 Letter Abreviation for your team (which will appear on the "select team" page)
2.  Team colors (Unifor/Bat).  If it is easier, you can tell me you want your team to be the same colors as an already exhisting team.

These will be taken on a first come basis.

My colors are green/gold (packer colors).
My 2 letter team name is BS (for Bill Stock; not Bullshit)

I closed the poll on the other thread.  Knucklers have it.  4 were for knuckles and a couple of others said they didn't care.  I guess this will even the playing fiield, since nobody would have chance against me with no "fasts" or "knuckles"  ;D .

I see no more reason to delay the draft since we all know the rules.  I am only waiting for a couple more team names/colors.

So Nails; you are up whenever you are ready.
I do not want to set up a mandatory time limit at this time.  However, if it takes too long, we can come up with one together.

Here is the first round order:
1. Nails
2. Lips
3. Ryno23
4. Stockw19
5. JoeDirt
6. Gantry
7. Baines
8. Noah

There are no rules at all on drafting except you must have 12 batters and 4 Pitchers.  (ie you can draft 12 outfielders if you want).
When the draft is done, each team can send me their starting lineup and pitching rotation.

I think we should do positions.  It makes for some strategy.

Title: Re: RBI "Straight Pitch" League-Draft
Post by: Stock on 02/02/05, 10:33:58 PM
My goal was for everyone to get the best possible hitting team.  For example, when I play normal RBI and sub Santiago with Murph for the rest of the game, he is not playing the right position anyway.  There is no defensive advantage of playing someone in their proper position.

Ultimately, I think the real strategy will be when to pass up a good hitter in the draft for a good pitcher.
Title: Re: RBI "Straight Pitch" League-Draft

this should be a poll
Title: Re: RBI "Straight Pitch" League-Draft
Post by: Stock on 02/02/05, 10:41:12 PM
I think this is my time to take a stance as commissioner.  I have already compromised on the Knuckle/fastball thing and the idea of picking pitchers during the normal draft.

Plus, I already spent an hour putting together a list of my top 96 batters in the order I would like them.  I would like to think my time of no productivity at work counted for something :)

Yeah, screw positions for this draft. Shitty players will just get subbed anyways, and it will be cool to have a full lineup and bench.

There are no positions in RBI.  If this were the case, then I would also have to make a rule that you cannot sub (for example) an outfielder for a catcher, if you plan on leaving them in.  This just gets too confusing.  Let's just make our lineup full of the best hitters we can get and swing away.
JoeDirt, feel free to change your pick before Gantry picks (if this was your stipulational pick)... Is "stipulational" a word? :-\

Not to be confused with hjose canseco, who is his less-talented, drunker twin brother.  Canseco (called Cansco by his teammates) packs a mean bat and is always swinging for the fences.  His outstanding 951 power tied for second in RBI, surpassed only behind franchise pick Andre Dawson.   Though GM Gantry Zettler has a penchant for lefties, the sheer size of Canseco's package was to much to pass on...

When asked for a comment on falling to the 6th pick, Canseco had this to say:

Jose - "I'm going to hunt down all those motherfucking motherfuckers and make them eat my shit.  Fucking pencil-necked geeks on the Internet spitting on my good name, how dare they let me slip to the 6th pick.  40/40 bitches, Booyah!"

Select...

Darryl "Drugs" Strawberry
(http://www.cracksmoker.com/dstrawberry3.jpg)

The decision for Strawberry was simple - a powerful left-handed hitter with a good set of wheels.   Strawberry is the most complete player in the game and should be the perfect #3 hitter for the Poopybutts.

Inside sources say GM Gantry "Dingleberry" Zettler was adamant on getting a left-handed hitter.  He's an outspoken advocate for lefties and was furious about not being able to draft Evans or Jackson.

Most importantly, Strawberry adds a most impressive rap sheet (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/hallofshame.shtml#DARRYL), giving the Poopybutts two maladjusted drug users in their lineup.  Team chemistry has never been my strong suit.

Even if we lose, we can now enjoy this daily regimen:

  • Roid up before the game
  • Get into fights with my teammates
  • Let fly balls bounce of my head
  • Do a little blow come the 8th inning
  • Find a hooker outside the parking lot
  • Beat up said hooker
  • Do even MORE blow
  • Go out to the club
  • Beat up everyone in sight

With Strawberry and Canseco, you cover all facets of off-the-field mischief.  Get your cameras rolling folks, the Poopybutts will be fun to watch!

The hold up is that the Thundercats are offering just plain chocolate pudding.  The Hoggs, being the pudding experts they are, are demanding that sweet ass parfait style pudding with three different flavors.

Yeah, a thought-to-be one hour dinner with the parents went way longer than expected.  My aunt and uncle were in town.  Sorry...

Anyways...the Lips Bitch Slapping continues, as I thought for sure Will Clark would still be around for this pick.  But of course, no.  Thank you, Nails.  Good drafting.

So The Thundercats will reach this round, partly because they want to see this bench player have a permanent spot on a starting roster and also because team captain, Potatoes, wants a Cali teammate aboard.  And we really don't want to upset Reggie at this point.

The Thundercats select Rupperto!

Dammit Ryno.
Can't believe you did that to me.  This was going to be my opportunity to bring some speed to my team.

I really want to wait on my this pick until Nails pick his two, but Nails was a little San Francisco friendly on his last two picks.  So, The Thundercats are going to select a guy that they really like; a guy that has been really good to their team owner in occasional play.  Plus, he has a great middle name.

The Thundercats select Jeffrey Fucking Leonard!

Select

"Fatty" Matty Nokes

The poopybutts desperately needed a lefty and they get a guy they almost took two rounds ago.  Of course that probably means he's been drafted and I haven't noticed...

While not the most consistent player in RBI, he is a big lefthanded bat and is super clutch in grand slam situations.  Good enough for me...

The new leadoff hitter for the:

Harry Spilman, RBI Legend

Intro

Harry Spilman wasn't known as the best hitter or the best fielder or the best baserunner. That wasn't Harry's style... He preferred to add a supporting role, and support he did. The figures never lie:
The Facts

    * Born July 18th 1954
    * His real first name is William, Harry is his middle name
    * Is ambidextrous - bats lefty, throws righty
    * Played in the Big Leagues from 1978-1989
    * Hit a Home Run in game 3 of the 1987 NLCS vs the Cardinals
    * Currently hitting coach of the Houston Astros

To Learn More

    * Harry's profile on Astros Daily (http://www.astrosdaily.com/players/Spilman_Harry.html)
    * Spilman's Stats on Baseball Reference (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/spilmha01.shtml)
    * Houston Astros Homepage (http://www.astros.com/)

Conclusion

I'll admit that Harry Spilman isn't one of the first names that pop in your head when you consider the all-time greats. But for anyone who has used Harry in RBI, his name will always comes to mind. He is the best pinch-hitter in RBI Baseball (though some may disagree with me on this), and that is one impressive mark to leave. Who cares if you only hit 18 homers in 12 years, you're in the RBI Elite!!

Nails/Lips,

Is the Sheridan for Lou deal done?  If so, (out of fairness) I should give any of the other players in our league a chance to strike this trade.  If two or more players (25%) wish to block this trade, it should be their right.
We have always done this for our fantasy league, just to prevent any team for getting lopsided (or anyone "working" a great team w/ someone else :().
I KNOW nobody is doing this here, but just want to be a fair commish.   ;D
If 2 people do not strike this by tomorrow morning, we will consider it done.

I choose not to stand in the way of this trade.  There was no attempt at collusion, in my opinion.  I think teams have the right to make poor trades (not that this is one)--that doesn't mean there's attempt to cheat.  Some people just make poor trades.

If 2 people do not strike this by tomorrow morning, we will consider it done.

Gantry, is up for the next pick.

Yeah, it's a done deal.  So if anyone wants to veto it, fire away.

I wholeheartedly approve the Sheridan for Whitaker trade.  Lips went tactical and it backfired, he is one of the finest (if not THE finest) straight-pitch Pat Sheridan players in the country.  Most would probably prefer Whitaker, but not the dee-nee clan...

The quintessential #7 sub joins the

Jim Lindeman, RBI Legend

Intro

Quick question - what's the greatest thing to come out of Des Plaines, Illinois? If you said that original McDonalds franchise or that new White Castle on River Road, you are way off. It's the one and only Jim Lindeman, RBI Legend:

The Facts

    * Born January 10th, 1962
    * Played his college ball at Bradley University in Illinois
    * Played in the Big Leagues from 1986-1994
    * Hit a Home Run in the 1987 NLCS
    * Faced off against former college teammate Kirby Puckett in the 1987 World Series
    * From the great town of Des Plaines, Illinois
    * Was a "Roving Hitting Instructor" for the White Sox Training Centers
    * Currently varsity coach of the Rolling Meadows High School Baseball Team

To Learn More

    * Lindeman's Stats on Baseball Reference (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lindeji01.shtml)
    * Lindeman's Stats on CNN/SI (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/all_time_stats/players/l/3920/)
    * Some weird website with Jim Lindeman's home address on it (http://www.signaturesofsuccess.com/addresses/players/jimlindeman.html)
    * Lindeman's profile on The Bull Sox Academy website (http://www.bullssoxacademy.com/baseball/instructors.htm#linderman)
    * Detailed Directions to Jim Lindeman's House (http://mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&address=2278+Scott+Street&city=Des+Plaines+&state=IL&zipcode=&homesubmit.x=19&homesubmit.y=10)

Conclusion

Jim Lindeman is the man, pure and simple. His play on the field of RBI is nothing short of legendary. Most rookies to the game scoff when big Jim takes the field, but us veterans know better. After Jack Clark, he is the most powerful hitter on the Cardinals roster. Put him in at the seven spot and watch the homers fly...

The Thundercats are trade-happy.  We are willing to trade Jim Rice straight up for Gibson.

By the way, the current RBI Legends count:
Gantry and the Poopybutts 2
Lipitz and the Thundercats 2
Noah and the Ark 1

A lot of curve players put Lindeman at 7th, too...but I'm here to tell you people that it is a big mistake bc in curve, it's too easy to walk around Clark if Lindeman isn't hitting directly before/after him.

Yes, I definitely agree.  Hope I'm not coming across as a dick, just want to be fair with the trading thing from the beginning. (This is the first trade).  All we are trying to prevent is a ridiculous trade (ie.. I wish to trade Armas and Evens for Burlsn).

Ok, Ryno...you are gonna make me work a little more for Gibson.  How does this sound?

How about I give you Jim Rice and my 8th round pick (my next pick, when its come back our way)...for Gibson and your 9th round pick.  Meaning, you would have back to back picks in the 8th round, while I would have back to back picks in the 9th.

Interesting enough?

Not really sure exactly what happened here.  But, Gantry sounds right.  It is up to Baines.  If Baines wants Hendrick, he should be allowed to have him, then Noah should have to stick w/ Pena.  If Baines does not want Hendrick, then Noah has him.

I went class with the Miller Lite bottles tonight, hence the pace.  Though it pained me to blow $13.49 on 18 bottles when 30 Old Styles were $11.99 - but you gott spoil yourself every once in awhile...

Noah,  You still have 6 spots to fill.  You only need 4 pitchers (8 starting batters, 4 subs, 4 pitchers is 16.  Your still OK.

Baines, your up.

If you pick another taken player, you ARE getting Steve Lake

You shouldn't be so rough on Steve.  He was the 2nd or 3rd best back up catcher the cubs had in 85-86

Awesome,

I will look over everyone's rosters and write something up when I get up tomorrow.  I will start working on the ROM tomorrow too.  Don't think there are any errors but will check that too.

What was that trade (whitaker and someone?).  Someone may have replied before, but I lost it in the mess of messages.

Post by: Nails on 02/05/05, 01:39:31 AM
Complete rosters can be found here (http://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?topic=5324.0).

Everybody should review it and make sure their team is right, and that you have 12 batters, 4 pitches (2 sp, 2 rp).  JoeDirt is in charge of spelling.

Yeah...I just couldn't do it though.  I already have 2 lefties on my bench, I wasn't going to go with a 3rd.  I went with Puhl over Larkin.

So is dee nee somehow named after Larkin in some sort of sick, twisted way?

If you would spend less time pouring over spelling mistakes and more time absorbing the site, you would know the answer:

http://dee-nee.com/rbi/faq.shtml#DEENEE

---

What exactly is Dee-Nee?

The term Dee-Nee started out as a sound effect by Potsie. He made a silly sound when bringing in pinch hitter Gene Larkin one day, and we all couldn't stop laughing. So it eventually grew into an everyday term, usually uttered when something good happens to you. Click here (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/sounds/deenee.wav) to hear Dee-Nee in it's proper pronounciation. It's a "dih nih" sound, not "d knee"

Sorry you asked, aren't ya?

Probably for the sex appeal.

Dee as in "Dees nuts"

Nee as in "get on your nees and suck on dees nuts"
