Title: Straight Pitch League Week 5 Results
Post by: Baines on 03/17/05, 09:06:35 PM
Ryno and I just split the first 2 games of our series bot by the score of 11-6.   If two games of this score took place in portsmouth, much drunkenness and celebration would take place.  We'll play the tiebreaker after he gets in his MVP with Bonny and I get in some more Old Style and college basketball.

Ryno will have to post his HR stats as I usually use the break in the action to tip up my Old Style rather than write down opponents stats.  also feel free to correct me on any of the writeups.

Game 1:

Baines wins his 2nd game of the year.   Timmy Burks comes out of a season long slump to hit two bombs and another double high off the wall.  The game was close most of the way until Phil Garner came off the bench with a 3 run blast followed by the nail in the coffin by Eric Davis.

Baines HR's:  Burks (2), Baylor, Garner, EDavis

Game 2:

The Parish State bats never showed up for this oneother tahan a 4 run 4th.  Brett hit a quality late inning blast off the bench.  the difference in this one was Parish State's manager failing to give their pitchers the hook in time  with Saberhagen and Kerfeld both giving up dingers on sub 50mph pitches.

Baines HR's:  Chet Lemonparty, Eric Davis, George Brett

Edit - Just cleaning up the thread subject.

Parish State plays the role of spoiler as they come through with their first series win with a 12-10 victory.  The PSU pitching continued to be worthless, giving up 8 bombs to the Hoggs.  Dawson continued to make the PSU staff his bitch with another 2 homers but PSU's bats came through with some clutch hitting from Ellis Burks and Chet Lemonparty, scoring 8 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to earn the comeback victory.

Baines HR's:  Lemonparty (2), Burks (2), EDavis

Hoggs HR's:  Dawson (2), Murphy (2), Carter, Dw Evans, Heath, Baines

Full of potential. . . . pure shit on the mound. . . . super duper pooper scooper home run hitters at the plate.

Fernando can suck a big phat billy goat dick, as can dave smith.

Baines strapped on the rec specs and gave me a beating like the bitch that I am.

congrats, homie.

League-leading JoeDirt welcomed The Thundercats to Tengen Field.  This matchup had the makings to be a pitcher's game, with The Express facing off against The Rocket.

The Thundercats tried to take the game into their own hands in the first inning.  Rupperto got them going with a solo homer and RBI followed suit to quickly put The Thundercats up 2-0.  After the initial homers, The Thundercats' hitters slowed to a crawl.

And in the middle innings, JoeDirt came back with two solo shots of his own, with Trammell and Puckett.

With the score knotted at 2-2, neither club got their offense going for the rest of regulation.  So they went to SHROVERTIME (aka extra innings)...

The 10th and 11th innings passed, and the score was still square at 2-2.  The pitchers were definitely stealing the show.

But in the top of the 12th inning, RBI went yard AGAIN...this time, it was a 2-run shot.  That was enough to hold off JoeDirt.  And with that victory, The Thundercats joined the Poopybutts as the only two teams to have beaten JoeDirt in the Straight Pitch League.

The Homers...

JoeDirt:
Trammell 1
Puckett 1

The Thundercats:
Jones 1
Rice 2

Game 2 to follow shortly...

After the excruciating long game, The Thundercats were hoping to sneak in some runs against Nolan again.

And indeed, they did...  Nolan powered through Leonard and Jones to start off the game, but both Rice and Jackson found ways to get on base.  Ahhh, and we all remember the Whitaker/Sheridan snafu at the draft (thanks again, Nails...really).  Sheridan proved his worth here, with a huge 3-run home run.

And with that shot, Sheridan set the mood for The Thundercats' early innings.  After the 3-run first inning, The Thundercats came back very strong in the second with a 5-run inning...which included a 3-run shot by RBI.  And in the third, The Thundercats tacked on one more run.

The rest of the game was pretty much JoeDirt fighting off the slaughter, which he successfully did.

The Thundercats won 10-2, to take a (2-0) series lead.

The Homers...

JoeDirt:
Hrbek 1
Puckett 1

The Thundercats:
Rice 1
Jackson 1
Sheridan 1
Pendleton 1
Gedman 1

Game 3 to follow shortly...

All good things come to an end...

The Thundercats came out scoring in the first inning for the third straight game, this time netting only a run.  But you can't keep a good man down forever...  JoeDirt came back with a vengeance, scoring four runs in the first.

With the tables turned, how would the Thundercats react?  Well, they have seen better days.  In their attempt to fight back, the Thundercats pulled to within two runs multiple times, before JoeDirt went off with another 4-spot in the mid-innings.

The second 4-run inning was enough to mentally break The Thundercats.  While they had hopes of the sweep after finishing Game 2, reality suck in and the straight pitch league leader, JoeDirt, showed up for some payback.

JoeDirt won 9-3.

The Homers...

JoeDirt:
Trammell 1
Guerrero 1
Mattingly 1
McGwire 1
Mitchell 1

The Thundercats:
Jones 1
Jackson 1

How else can you explain my lame ass beating the Thundercats 2 out of 3 and JoeDirt laying an egg against them.

Commissioner Kinnesaw Mountain Landis should hold a complete investigation. . . . full body cavity searches all around. . . . .. comb the desert!

Congrats on the series victory, Sir Lipitz.  A winner is you. . .. . .

I give all the credit to Lips and his pitching with Clemens.  He was a beast.  My timing was off the entire series--but that was because Lips pitched so well.

Lips also averaged about eleventy billion foul balls per batter--also to his credit (although I am not saying he did this purposefully--I am saying he was able to still somehow get a piece of pitches that caught him off guard).

I've said it before and I will say it again: there is no way the four playoff teams aren't me, Lips, Gantry and Noah.  The rest of you should be offended by that!

ps...for the sake of posterity alone, game 3 was actually 10-3, not 10-2.  :(

No doubt there, but he's had some terrible luck in the league this year and his record has suffered.

This league should carry on for multiple seasons. . . . .  .Joe, you should sell your team.

Oh, hell ---- we should do a salary cap fantasy RBI league. . . . . that would be fkn mcawesome.

They are currently updated thru week 4.  Since then Ryno is 1-2, Baines is 2-1, JoeD is 1-2, and Lips is 2-1.

Don't worry Joe, you are in first place whether you look at wins or winning%.

Stock & Noah have finally finished there long awaited Week 5 series.  Although a losing effort, this was the most competative and close series I have played in.  Noah is a tough competitor.  Noah wins the series 2-1.

Game 1:

This was the most exciting of the 3 games.  The lead changed 7 times in this game, staying neck to neck 'till the very end.  Two bops (leading to 2 unearned runs) early in the game helped Noah to take this game into extra innings with a 7-7 tie.  I had chances in the bottom of the 9th and 10th to win the game with a HR in the bottom of the inning, but no luck.  Noah puts up 2 runs in the top of the 11th, and I was blanked for the 3rd inning in a row.  Noah wins 9-7 in 11 innnings.
HRs-Noah:  Joyner, Wilfong, Bell 2, Burleson, Gaetti, & Downing.
HRs-Stock:  DaEvans, DeCincs, Laudner, & K. Hernandez.

Games 2 and 3 were split, both with a score of 6-3.  These games were exact opposites.  The first game, I put up 5 runs in the first 3 innings (all off Home Runs), and Noah never caught up.  The second game Noah put up 5 runs in the first 3 innings, and I could not come back.

Game 2 Noah HRs:  Bell
Game 2 Stock HRs:  Armas, Mldndo 2, Laudner 2, Brenly.

Game 3 Noah HRs:  Gaetti 2, Wilfong
Game 3 Stock HRs:  Laudner, DeCincs, Keith Hernandez.

One Series still needs to be completed for week 5, then the standings will be updated.

Nails vs. PoopyButts- Week 5 results

Game 1 - PoopyButts 12, Nails 4
After a promising start by Doc Gooden, the PoopyButt bats fired up and delivered a fierce beating to Nails' bullpen.  Straw, Canseco, and Nokes went yard twice each, leading the 12-4 slaughter.

Homeruns:
Nails:  Tim Teufel, Will Clark, Chili Davis
PB: Strawberry (2), Canseco (2), Nokes (2), Mike Schmidt, Jack Clark

Game 2 - Nails 3, PoopyButts 0
Nails took his first game of the season in a 3-0 shutout.  Holy fucking shit.  The PoopyButts had a rocky start, giving up all three runs in the 1st two innings, and then shut Nails' offense down for the remainder of the game.  Gooden came out of the bullpen and was able to hold on for the win.

Homeruns:
Nails:  Tim Teufel, Will Clark
PB: None

Game 2 - PoopyButts 7, Nails 1
After snapping the 13 game losing streak, team Nails returned to their losing ways, and the PoopyButts pitching and offense dominated in a 7-1 beating.  Nails' bats were no match for Meca Blyleven and the Garreltts/Hernandez combo.  The game ended on a triple play when runners on 1st and 2nd were doubled up on a sharp line drive to left field.

Homeruns:
Nails:  Danny Heep
PB: Canseco (2), Howard Johnson, Mike Schmidt, Jack Clark

It was a great series, Nails played darn tough and pitched a gem in game two.  I suck at hitting online, get into major hitless streaks.  Tim Teufel killed me too, multiple games with leadoff dingers...

Teufel rips it up with the pinch hit bonus in his first at bat, but has really fizzled out afterwards all season.  I can't seem to hit anything but grounders to short after the first at-bat.

Hitting online can be pretty damn tough.  It's hard to keep your timing with the slowballs, lag, and fastballs that just disappear.
